Pretty sure he's played there before this season.

And scored. He presses well, attacks well, and looks to get in behind. I'd be all for it if Poch doesn't trust Townsend on the left, as I think it would really open things up for Eriksen, Lamela, and Kane.

Assuming Lloris and Walker are still out and Jan has recovered from his illness i would probably go with this:

Vorm
Vlad Deir Vert Rose
Stambouli Bentaleb
Lamela Dembele Eriksen
Kane
Even tho i doubt we realistically have a shot of top four i still dont want us to give up that hope and now i just want us to finish above Liverpool. Finishing 5th and being in Europa may suck but it will bring extra money and help draw in a slightly higher caliber of player. The most important thing for Poch to do now is settle with a team come rain of shine and this, with exception of injury and Mason going through a poor patch at the moment, is probably our best line up.

I like Chadli but if he's in the starting XI after recent performances I'll lose the plot

Lloris

Chiriches Dier Vertonghen Rose

Mason Bentaleb

Dembele

Lamela Kane Eriksen

Villa's strengths are clearly the counter attack. We're at home and the onus will be on us so its imperative we look after the ball well and don't lose it easily due to their threat on the counter.

For me Dembele is crucial here. Yes I know we struggle to break down deep lying sides...but Dembele with Lamela on the right, for more incision, is the way to go.

Please, for the love of God Poch:

Lloris

Vlad
Dier
Vertonghen
Rose

Bentaleb
Mason

Lamela
Dembele
Eriksen

Kane

Eriksen on the flank in this one does not spell well, as Sherwood will know better than anyone the defensive weakness it instills, especially against counterattacking pace. He will certainly look to counter in behind him if we choose such an option, just as Rodgers did with Ibe. I'd like to see either Rose or Townsend deployed at left mid, as they could run Hutton into shreds and really cause Villa's shaky back line some problems. Villa are shocking at shielding the top of the box, so if we can get in behind them and to the byline to pass back towards the top of the 18, we should be able to easily harm them.

In fact, I think I would just bench Eriksen altogether for this one. I think he needs a break and I think he needs to know he is not immune to being dropped. He was lackluster at the beginning of the season, picked it up in the late fall and winter, and seems to now have reverted back to playing with very little zip and energy.

So while I'd preferentially love to see Onomah given the start at the No 10, I think we should go with Dembele, as he could disrupt the dispersal from Westwood/Sanchez and keep the ball at the feet of Rose/Townsend and Lamela. Would like to see Lamela play a bit deeper so as to have more space to pick up the role of primary playmaker with Eriksen being benched.

How people starting Mason and Bentaleb together is beyond me. Name me a game besides Arsenal where they've looked evenly remotely good as a pairing? Yes it's nice they came from the academy, yes they look enthusiastic, but they just don't do the basics well enough to warrant starting. Everybody is taking flack except these two, they offer little to no protection to the back four, lose possession in dangerous areas and have scored what, 3/4 goals between them this season? One of Stambouli, Capoue or Dembele needs to come in.

Agreed actually, I think they too like Eriksen need a reality check than they're just as droppable as anyone else. Personally, I'd drop Bentaleb for this one as I think he's slackened up the most between the two, and also because I think we should keep the forward drive of Mason involved and then supplement him with Stambouli alongside him. If he's not fit, get over it Poch, and play Capoue.
