But why would Doherty agree to the contract termination? Unless he was going to get the remaining 18 months of his contract paid up front to do so.

That doesn’t seem a considered, financially viable decision to me from the clubs POV as we’d be spending the same amount on his wages but also losing a potential transfer fee.
Because he gets to be a free agent at 31 and sign a long term deal on the back of 6 months actually playing football rather than being 3rd option - or even 4th if he stayed for another 18 months.

He'll probably get one more decent contract out of this at a decent premier league/spl club that he may not have got if the club held on to him and demanded a fee. Plus it frees a spot up for us. Mutual termination benefits both parties. It's clear what both sides got out of this.

The same people asking for us to pay more to get players over the line quicker (‘just pay the release clause’ crew) are now also moaning about us losing money for a ‘possible’ future fee we’ve passed up by releasing Doherty.

Because nobody wants to buy them
At least not for what Levy wants. The best way forward for a lot of that driftwood is to hopefully use them as leverage for future purchases. EG: Let's say Danjuma does well and we want to keep him. Villereal wants to keep Lo Celso. It sorta nets out to zero.

Or, let's say next summer we make a run at Kim. But we can include Ndombele and Sanchez as a part of that deal. Clearly Tanguy can't be doing that badly for them, as they're top of the chuffing league! And Sanchez would probably do quite well Italy.

Anyways, I'll take my rainbow of positivity and shove it where the sun don't shine!

Totally get all the anger and frustration. But I also think there are some bits and pieces to be happy about.

Also would like to add that we also have some really talented young players, that could end up being superstars: Bryan, Sarr, Udogie. The latter we can already see if a freak of nature. Having him and Porro bombing up and down the left and right. Yikes!

You want to sack Paratici?

The mind truly boggles at the thought process.
Why's that? Are you a big fan of his?

There's an argument he's doing ok, but a decent one that he isn't too. I don't see any argument that he's irreplaceable.

He's banned from operating in Italy for breaking rules. That's a risk to us now, based on him being a cheater or that we are affected by his past cheating if the ban is expanded geographically. He oversaw the hiring of Nuno here - the process and the outcome were well below par. He's got as many poor signings as good ones. He paid 25M for Royal! He has 8 players over 21 out on loan! We had to cancel a contract in the last hours of deadline day rather than have a more managed exit of a player.

Not that mind boggling

Thanks Mr Levy. One trophy in all these years is forgiven and forgotten. You’ve bought a player I hadn’t heard of weeks ago with the maximum distraction of deadline day drama and last 10 minutes reveal. I hope you’ve got a few quid left over to get yourself something nice.

Now, financial results and season ticket renewals are due, right?
That saying, he's brought us from a club that everyone thought was irrelevant, in the small stadium albeit iconic for Spurs supporters, to a club in regular European football recently, to the best stadium in possibly world football, with a world Class manager who previously wouldn't have looked a team like Tottenham, well positioned in the PL still in the CL and domestic cup..... I get this window wasn't what everyone wanted but ffs we've got our main transfer target we wanted and didn't waste money on a CB we maybe didn't want in June.

PS.
I want new owners too but not everything the baldy bastard has done is bad, he's put us in a place we're we can at least competitive and be in a position were people with money might want to buy the club!

We tried for a young British CB in the last few days of the transfer window and talks were advanced. However the selling club were unable to find an adequate replacement in time so opted against selling in the January window. We may go back in for him in the summer, although other targets are likely to become available in the summer window who weren’t available in the Jan window.

Shame we couldn't have started that on Jan 1st so there was time. Oh well, next window....

Would love to get some post-mortem ITK on this window. Sounds like the last few days were utter chaos.

Very pleased we got Porro over the line, hoping he will improve us a lot.

The club has once again willingly left us short. You'd think they'd have learned after all the points we lost in Oct/Nov because we didn't sign a RW backup.

Same old story, we cannot be surprised anymore... However.. Looking at it logically if there was ever anything logical about spurs right now.

We have players from AVB , Poch, Jose, Nuno and Conte. A mixed squad full of average players.

The contract situation with Conte regardless of who is to blame; having to invest heavily on Conte style players this window was always going to be a big risk not knowing post end of season managerial situation we would be at.

Disappointed, and embarrassed it took 31 days to sign just one player.....

Come on lads I'm all for knocking levy and club strategy but least releasing Doherty actually solves an issue. For too long we have accused levy of hanging on to players for too long etc I'm glad we've gotten rid of a player that isn't good enough for us and no one was going to buy from us.
That is a change in tact from us which I hope continues on. Too many below average players in our squad, need to ship them out any way we can.
Tack. PLS.

Yup. It's a combination of most of Europe being skint, the players not impressing when in the shop window, and more than likely us holding out for too much.

That is what makes the Doherty terminating his contract so odd. We will apparently hold out for every last bit of money for any number of players but dropped Doc (seemingly) without trying to haggle with someone for a payday.

My best guess is that we are close to a takeover / investment and that’s why Derek isnt spending Enic cash. Leaving more value to investors on the table.

that said I could be talking bollocks as this is his MO in general.

Thanks for this. Another reason that last-minute deals aren't the best of ideas.

Did anyone seriously think we'd get a fee for Doherty in the summer? At 31, on probably un-matchable wages, and with a year left on his deal?

I'm glad he's gone. Less to worry about in the summer.

Also, it's hilarious to step out of the echo chamber of perpetually online Spurs supporters, where most I've talked to are happy with the window and feel better about this season's prospects ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Me too. I’m concerned that so many members of this forum took their eyes off the main issues with the Doherty announcement in that we didn’t sign a CB still and allegedly stop trying for several possible deals because we weren’t sure we could do any more loans (whether those loans would have been good for us is unknown).
