Good point. Thought VDV also plays at LB though, in which case he presumably should get sufficient minutes anyway?
But I guess it goes to the point we have, Udogie, perisic, Davies, sessegnon and reguilon at Lb currently. We can sign a 6th one until we shift at least 3 there:

But spurs have shown themselves to be a terrible club for young players. If we sign a very expensive quality cb in tapsoba why would vdv want to come here? He’s young he has to play to develop further. He’s better staying for another year if we sigh tapsoba. We don’t have European football etc to even offer him.
In the recent past, yes. It was bad under the latter years with poch, and conte.

Less so with Jose, who gave a few some chances, such as Japh.

However, new leadership, with a focus on development is part of the ethos, and I hope we are selling this.

I totally agree because I can't see either Topsoba or VDV happy to sit on the bench . It makes more sense practically and financially to have one of them to play with Romero and have Lenglet and/or Dier as back ups.
Good - part of our problem is that we have far too many players who are happy to sit on the bench.

If it would only be either Taps or VDV, I would personally much rather have Tosin as backup than Lenglet, as the latter got KILLED playing in Barca’s highline.
I suppose it depends how happy VdV would be to play as an auxiliary LB if he wants to primarily grow and develop as a CB.

If we can sell most of our current LBs (Perisic, Sess, Regi) and go into the season with Udogie, Davies and VdV that leaves us quite well covered and you'd imagine VdV would get his fair share of games there.

I think Tapsoba is the one to push for, but I do think VdV's versatility would be useful long term if he's happy to cover at LB a bit like Dan Burn at Newcastle.

Not sure if that will be the case under Ange. We certainly were good for young players under Poch. Also Emerson was his age when he arrived and now we have Udogie who is likely to start a lot too. Romero was about 23 when he signed. Porro is just 1 year older too. No reason VdV shouldn't expect plenty of game time.

It's more the issue of him getting on the pitch rather than his age. Ange apparently doesn't rotate his CBs much and if Tapsoba and Romero are the clear favourites, VdV could be reduced to cup games, injury cover and the odd game at LB. Without Europe there aren't a wealth of games to go round if we're injury free, especially if we get bad cup draws.

Hard to sell that prospect to a player that's at a key stage of his development and wants to start every minute.

Put it this way, if you were VdV would you join Spurs this summer if Tapsoba was signed first? Not sure I would.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Romero pushing to go to a champions league club this year or next.

Hoping we can get both done but understand why we might not.

Like the majority I really want both VDV and Tapsoba.
CBs is a place we can't afford to mess around with and I really feel like Tapsoba could have an effect on us how Van Dijk had at Liverpool/ Saliba had at arsenal etc.

Both versatile too. VDV covering LB/LCB and Tapsoba covering LCB/RCB. There is literally no downside to getting them both in. It would set us up perfectly.

Please Tottenham.

There were rumours about Juve sniffing round Romero (not ITK)
I would be happy with Rom out and Tappy and VDV in.
I like Romero, but dont like how many games he misses and worry about how many cards he will get playing in a high line.

I agree, he's a good defender and we'll probably see a better side of him this year. I wouldn't be adverse to him out and tapsoba and VDv in.

Yeah but cb is the position clubs don’t rotate in

but no chance juve pay the money we paid for him. Why would we sell him at a big loss? Plus it’s a huge risk selling 5 cbs in one window and signing a completely new cb combination

I'd be very surprised if we brought in both regardless of how many went out personally. It's looking like two CB's in, but IMO it's Topsoba or VDV.

i Said this when we was being linked to both and now even more so, no way we sign both. Even if we managed to offload the deadwood. IMO it’ll be VDV and Lenglet

Buy cheap, buy twice

CBs have been a problem for 3+ years. We should buy the £80m option and then focus on clearing decks to re-coup money. For example, if the rumour of Ndombele being offered £20m is true bite their hand off
There’s no forward planning, like you say with both tapsoba and VDV, with Romero already here it sorts a problem position for next 5/6 years easily.

but it won’t happen and Lenglet will come in with VDV.

I reckon if we get VdV we'll push for Tosin over Lenglet as the 3rd pick.

Basically either:

1) Expensive + Cheap (Tapsoba + Lenglet)
2) Mid-range + Mid-range (VdV + Tosin)

Would hope Dorrington would have come through the ranks within 6-8 years - maybe others.
Hopefully he’s around the first team this year, perhaps a loan in January, then takes the 4th centre back position from next summer.

Romero missed 11 EPL matches last season (22-23), and 16 the year before through injury and suspensions (he collects a card roughly every 2 matches).

Considering he is our only decent CB at present, there would be plenty of game time for VDV even if we bought Tapsoba.
Hence, it would be naïve of the club not to buy 2 good CB's.

I understand shifting deadwood is a problem, but it has been for years and will continue to be as historically we've bought poorly. Time to be ruthless and push the boat out. We charge the highest prices, generate the most match day income, but have the lowest wages to turnover ratio of the big 6 and are around £300m under the FFP limit.

Possibly not and its a good point, at 22 VdV would want to be a regular I'm sure. So it's easy for fans to want both but will both want us is another valid question. I guess it depends how confident you are to be a regular regardless. Especially given he could play left back or Tapsoba could play right centre back. Not an easy decision. Maybe sign VdV first and then Tapsoba after

Whatever the combination of CBs we bring in. Remember a couple of things. A £50m player will be paid in installments. So rarely are we lumping £50m on the debit card. Could be in 2,3,4 differing installments up to eventually paying off the £50m.

But for FFP, that player @ £50m will be accounted for over the life of the contract. Say it's a 5year deal, that's £10m a year on the profit and loss statements. (well done if you did the maths in your head)

What does all this mean?... for FFP we're good. Buying in we amortise the players each year, selling players we have that money immediately! So buying 2x £50m players, doesn't mean we've actually handed over £100m. More like a Direct Debit for a part of each one.

Hope this help people to enhance their calm, when others are shouting 'spend the money' or 'same old Levy'.
