If we want to get the CB signing before we fly out seems like we've basically got to overpay to get Tapsoba done, or get VdV for ~30m.

No reason for Leverkusen to lower their asking price very much this early in the window when they aren't keen to sell and we don't want to drag out the negotiation of such a key signing all summer.

We need to shit or get off the pot.

Find it surprising that we aren’t hard in for both as an injury (or likely red card) to Romero leaves us vulnerable at centre back.

Plus would be nice to have some quality options available for cup games.

My guess is if we sign one the other might no longer want to join since they'd no longer have an obvious spot in the first team. Like if you're a highly rated upcoming CB like VdV do you really want to join a club that's not in Europe and has just dropped ~50m on another first choice CB in Tapsoba when you're desperate to play every week? Could be a terrible career move if Tapsoba never gets injured and Ange doesn't rotate much.

Would be an easier sell to get, say, Tosin as a 3rd choice CB who is unlikely to get a better offer than Spurs this summer, whereas VdV could have his pick of clubs next summer if he keeps improving.

So it looks like the combinations DL is considering (assuming two come in) are:

Topsoba plus Vdv = 80m
Topsoba plus Tosin = 65m
Topsoba plus Lenglet = 55m
Vdv plus Tosin = 45m
Vdv plus lenglet = 35m

my pure guess is that they probably think 60m is about what they should be spending without significant incoming money, which is why they are still working on bringing Topsoba price down and also not committing to anyone until they see who they might be able to get money for.

(Of course this is transfer fees only and doesn’t account for wages)

Buy cheap, buy twice

CBs have been a problem for 3+ years. We should buy the £80m option and then focus on clearing decks to re-coup money. For example, if the rumour of Ndombele being offered £20m is true bite their hand off

We could offload reguillon and sess/davies then use VDV as a lb/cb rotation. He is a progressive ball carrier and could play as the inverted lb.

We then buy tapsoba, and it doesn't harm us as much.

To be fair we spent a lot on Sanchez 😂

VDV looks a decent LB to me too...?

and I think it is a position we need sorting out too. Almost as much as centre back. Let's hope we can sort moves out for some of the defenders we dont want at the club and then see where we are. Glad it is being addressed though.

We have Udogie coming in for lb, and in the squad have Davies and Reggy, in no way is this a priority.

Getting both VDV and Tapsoba in pretty much sorts the CB position for the next 6-8 years, stops us needing to faff around for the next few seasons, and shows a certain striker that we are ambitious, want to improve and not fucking around; we know where the issue is and we're doing this to address it, so stick around as we're building something here.

Likely because Levy's playing the market and if there's a possibility of getting a better CB like Laporte, if Gvardiol goes City and we make a couple sales, then the option is there. If Tapsoba comes in he'll be coming as a starter.

This is the sort of sensible thinking that's usually overlooked by us when we are looking at transfer dealings. Absolutely spot on assessment imo - i'm sure you can pack your Fifa 23 team with 2 top class players for every position, but in the real world when you've won fuck all for years and just finished 8th (plus don't pay silly wages) then no decent young player wants to join to sit on the bench, when t's almost certain he can go somewhere else on similar money, as a starting XI and probably be more likely to win something !

But does he want to come to play second fiddle though? I wouldn’t. He needs to play.

With my extremely optimistic hat on this is what i'm hoping for, Laporte with VdV learning from him would be superb business, if a tad fanciful (but do able if things fell right ??)

Would love both, but if we did get Tapsoba over the line, it’s possible VDV may look at that and figure he’s backup/rotation in a season with no Europe and decide he’s better off with another season of 1st team football in the Bundesliga.
This, for me. We'd be asking him to come and ideally play what...10-15 games, including cups? This is a sought after player.

It's not 2nd fiddle. It's about coming and winning your place on merit. Good players should back themselves to beat the competition for places.
But spurs have shown themselves to be a terrible club for young players. If we sign a very expensive quality cb in tapsoba why would vdv want to come here? He’s young he has to play to develop further. He’s better staying for another year if we sigh tapsoba. We don’t have European football etc to even offer him.

Would hope Dorrington would have come through the ranks within 6-8 years - maybe others.

I'd be very surprised if we brought in both regardless of how many went out personally. It's looking like two CB's in, but IMO it's Topsoba or VDV.
I totally agree because I can't see either Topsoba or VDV happy to sit on the bench . It makes more sense practically and financially to have one of them to play with Romero and have Lenglet and/or Dier as back ups.

Good point. Thought VDV also plays at LB though, in which case he presumably should get sufficient minutes anyway?

If it would only be either Taps or VDV, I would personally much rather have Tosin as backup than Lenglet, as the latter got KILLED playing in Barca’s highline.
