Not ideal window, but I think the last two years have seen us bring in some very good players:
Romero
Bentancur
Bissouma
Kulu
Perisic
Richarlison
Porro

That's 7 (8 if you include Udogie joining in the summer) first X1 players. Including most importantly, two excellent wing-backs.

We also have good attacking depth: Danjuma, Lucas, Richarlison, Son, Kane, Deki.
Good midfield depth: Benta, PEH, Skippy, Sarr, Bissouma.

I get why a lot of people are frustrated and angry. I'm also annoyed that this center back saga is going to drag into the summer. But, at least it's quite clear what the focus will be over the summer (Regardless of whomever is managing the team). 2x CBs. 1 goalie, and a Lucas replacement will be the priorities.

And if you look at Transfrmrkt, there are loads of free agent CBs this summer, or ones with only 1 year remaining on their contracts. So, we don't have to spend 200M to bring in the aforementioned.

This is a much better squad of players than we had 2 years ago.

The big question obviously will come down to Conte's desire to stay. If he signs that new contract. Hopefully we can finish off the remaining pieces of the puzzle.

Yes, I'm being far too optimistic. Sorry.
Doom scrolling through, and this made me think. For me, 2 positives
As above, our team is objectively better than 2 years ago. And, we've added at least 1 starter per window.
We've cleared out the dross.
And (clutching here) if anything convinces VL (or new investors) that there is upside here, fucking up on Doherty, dragging pit and nearly fucking up porro, not getting any of a GK, LCB, CCB, or AM should make smart money think, you know what, maybe, just maybe I could do a better job here......
(OK, that's very UN-SC back as you were. Its all shit)

On the plus side - the transfer budget is rolling over to the next window, yet again.

Some year soon we’re due a £1bn transfer window.

Can’t wait.

Yeah for me all the pain we're going through now isn't a result of mistakes we've made in the market in the past 2 seasons. It's a result of 5 years of mistakes we made from 2016-2021 both in terms of transfers and management.

We're dead in the middle of the painful rebuild and, shock horror, we're actually doing quite a good job with recruitment. But it's slow and painful due to all the fuck ups we made in the past...and cos Spurs are never going to sign enough players at once to appease all of the fans or fill the endless holes in the squad.

That's not to say we couldn't have done better. The lack of CBs for a manager like Conte is defo a fuck up. But the list of signings under Paratici is solid and a huge improvement.

Thanks Mr Levy. One trophy in all these years is forgiven and forgotten. You’ve bought a player I hadn’t heard of weeks ago with the maximum distraction of deadline day drama and last 10 minutes reveal. I hope you’ve got a few quid left over to get yourself something nice.

Now, financial results and season ticket renewals are due, right?

We don't know how we found out though. It could well have been the Premier League who made a call for all we know
True. I'm sure the details will come out over the coming days, but I'd be amazed if we didn't find out about the rule until after we'd committed to 9 loans. None of it makes sense otherwise.

I'm prefacing what I'm about to say with the statement that I don't believe the club can take the next step with Levy in charge and we need a change to become truly elite (before anyone accuses me of being a Levy fan)

But fuck me are we really all so blinded that we believe the club only found out about the loan rules around Doherty tonight? Take the blinkers off for a second! There is absolutely no way we didn't explore the market for all potential outgoings and decide the most viable option financially was to cut ties with Doherty rather than pay his wages and cross the same bridge in the summer.

So many posters losing their minds in here are the same bashing the club for not 'doing what Arsenal have done' and cutting ties with players the manager doesn't want straight away to shape the squad in his image. Well here you go. We needed a new CB, but losing Doherty who has no future with us is a net positive.

Moan about not signing a new CB, but losing Doherty is not the hill to die on.

We paid him off - that's how we convinced him. He knew he was probably leaving Spurs in 6 months regardless with Porro arriving. Now he gets a pay-off and can get a signing on fee at his next club in the summer.

Win/win for Doc.

Exactly, we’ve had to pay him off for the remaining 18 months of his contract to get him to cancel his contract. And we’ve also had to write off why future transfer fee we could have got for him in the summer:

An expensive mistake for sure.

There’s no way it’s any other option, as why would Doc agree to cancel his contract unless we were going to pay up the full 18 months up front. Yes it would allow him his dream move to Atletico but that’s only for 6 months. Then what happens if he can’t find a new club in the summer? Or if he can only find a new club that will pay him less than what he would have earned in his last year at spurs?

The one single thing you (or anyone else for that matter) can do to improve your internet experience is to get yourself off Twitter completely. It's an abscess on the backside of humanity.
Couldn’t agree more. Always hated it and now it’s even worse since being bought by a right wing lunatic

Phenomenal signing in Porro. The best possible upgrade we could have attained in this window or the next in the position where we had the biggest skill gap. No more excuses for us not to be playing the fabled Conte-ball. Wish we'd got him sooner, but happy he's here.

Not overly happy with the lack of a new CB, but I also wasn't too excited about the options available this window. It's crucial that the CB positions are filled well, and not reactively so I'm not distraught. Also think we'll tighten up a lot after the City game, and it will bring a lot of stability that we've lacked recently. Having Benta back, and Biss showing signs of settling will also help a lot. I can wait for the summer, but when the time comes we will need to go big and quickly.

6/10 window. Needed to bring in a top CB, but Porro is a wonderful signing. We've made a major upgrade to a first team spot which is something that very few of our rivals can say.

But why would Doherty agree to the contract termination? Unless he was going to get the remaining 18 months of his contract paid up front to do so.

That doesn’t seem a considered, financially viable decision to me from the clubs POV as we’d be spending the same amount on his wages but also losing a potential transfer fee.

Yup. I mean as others have said maybe he would've wound down his contract anyway and we would've ended up paying all of his wages regardless (or letting him go for next to nothing to get his wages off the books - no other club is offering a 65k p/w contract to a 32 year old).

But at the very least we've given away the 4-5 months of wages Atletico were presumably covering over the course of his loan and/or the loan fee.

The more I think about it financially it's not quite as bad as it initially seemed, but it's surely cost the club a million quid at the very least.

Danjuma an unplanned opportunistic signing and replaces Gil as an attacking sub. Looks like he could be a decent player and offers some pace from the bench.

We paid Sevilla Lamela, £25 mil and Gil on loan for GIl.

Porro seems a good signing - hopefully a positive and hopefully can live up to the faith put in him on here!
