What’s funny is a forum of work-shirking transfer-fanatic football fans didn’t know anything about this either. Yet it’s OH MY GOD THIS IS THE MOST OBVIOUS THING EVER.

Yeah it’s not great - or at least not presented well - but I’d like to consider myself well informed on this sort of stuff and had no clue about it.

Unless I'm mistaken it's not anyone on here's actual job to know this stuff. Pay me a few million a year and I will be aware of this kind of shit or expect to be out of a job.

I wonder if Conte had shown commitment to the club, whether he'd have been backed more.. If he's off in 6 months, there is very little point splashing out on players for him.

It's been a massive issue since he joined. There's just so little certainty around the club at the moment. At least with Nuno we knew it was never going to last long.

Do you never make mistakes in your job? It's a fairly new rule. When you have decades of experience working without said rule, it's easy to overlook in the heat of the moment.

When new rules come in it’s quite hard to fall foul of them, because they should be front and centre in your recent memory - if you’re competent.

Given how much our board are paid, I don’t think staying abreast of player registration rules is an unreasonable ask.

Especially when there’s more than sodding one of you involved in the process.

Of course you’re not what? I’m not saying you’ve let yourself down by not knowing something. This is a forum that finds out flight details of people trying to join the club. That pours over and over who can and can’t play in the Champions League. Who is homegrown etc.

So yeah, there’s a big focus on here generally on what can and can’t be done.

So it’s interesting that it’s never come up before now. To me.

Also it makes ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE TO ANYTHING. Doc was never going to play for us again and arguably wouldn’t have commanded a fee either.
Well it certainly makes you question the ability of the people running the club and its leadership.

If it was a one off issue I'd be a tad worried but would probably give the benefit of the doubt.

But the club has been running from one bad decision to another for years now and people are finally snapping.

Agree with everything you’ve written. It still makes us look ridiculous the way this has panned out though
Comms terrible. As it looks like they didn’t know. They could have known all along - now there’s no real way of presenting that they did - albeit it’s a creative solution that got sorted quickly. That’s too positive a spin for it for most.

I suppose this is quite close to what I do. Things get found out in the last minutes of deals and you think on your feet to get it done. All that anyone remembers is the end result in the end even if you missed something along the way. Doesn’t stop you having a breakdown along the way either.

Yeah sorry - when you are paid to know about this stuff - you should know about this stuff.

We potentially could have avoided this - had we known - and insisted on a domestic loan for Spence.

In the end - it looks poor because it's an unforced error. But, we were never going to get anything for Doherty - so this gets him off the books. B

Bloody hell, the mood around here. Most people on here have spent months moaning about Doherty not being good enough. We have replaced Doherty with an exciting player, who has cost a lot of money.
Now you’re all moaning that we have released Doherty.
You can’t have it both ways. You can’t moan the club are too cautious and don’t spend, then moan when the club is a tiny bit wreckless.
I don’t know what you were all expecting from the January window.
