agreed

Obviously sad news for Ledley, good for Spurs.

About Woody, we all know he ain't made of steel so a rest will only do him good for the finishing games of the Premiership.

None of the players are made of steel ! Are you implying that no one should be playing for their National team !?!?

I believe and hope that, if Woodgate is good enough to be drafted in, than that's the way it should be. He has been quality for us this year and he has actually more than earned his right to be included.

It's actually less of a risk than it is to play him in a Premiership game as this England game is only a friendly.

I think it was selfish on our part to deny the lad another England cap and a chance to represent his country because there might not be many of them chances for him again.

He's been playing once a week and him playing the friendly this Saturday still would have allowed him to play for us the following weekend.

From what I can gather, we didn't totally deny him the chance. We were against it but it seems like Ledley also had a decision to make on this and decided not to risk it.

It is not so much about picking up an injury and missing a few games. It is about prolonging his career as much as possible.

Do players not suffer injuries in international friendlies?

If he's gonna suffer a major injury I'd rather he do it playing his heart out in a meaningful PL game for Spurs than a meaningless friendly for England.

Good news for the club.

I can only imagine how Ledley feels right now though. But I'd say Capello knew and maybe just wanted his recent performances to be recognised.

Just seen an interview on Setanta News, with a Frenhc journalist, and he recalled an interview with Thierry Henry, and during that interview Henry said that King was the best defender he has played against. That coming from one of the best strikers who has every played against Tottenham is a massive compliment to King.

God save Ledley

I remember that Interview with Henry.
He said he is the only English defender that does not need to go to ground and can just take the ball from you.

This good for him and us.

If this one can be fit 100%, I'm sure he can challenge Ferdinand for his place !

I think the door is open. Capello isn't a mug (an understatment given hsi CV) and i'm pretty sure King would be considered for a squad role in the world cup. Capello has 2 world class Cb's but nothing beyond that. Carra has retired, Woodgate has previous at madrid and King are the only quality beyond Terry and Rio and King is the only option if Rio specifically gets a suspention in a tournament.
Becasue King has shown he can do nothing for weeks and still come in a be the best i think that makes him perfect for squad football at the World cup.

God save the King. I cannot explain how much I wish for him he can one day sort out his injury problems and achieve what he was meant to achieve!

;_; can't we buy him a new knee? i'd happily donate him mine

and like gerrard says, i think he could still end up as back-up in the WC, but it'd be risky since he hasn't played with the squad before. as it is we have plenty of defenders who aren't as good but can still do the job, so i'm happier that he focuses on Spurs

Fabio Capello is determined to pick Ledley King again despite the chronic knee problems that forced the Tottenham Hotspur defender to withdraw from the England squad yesterday, only 40 hours after his recall.

The England manager has been hugely impressed by King's performances this month and his view has not been changed by yesterday's farcical events. King arrived on the team bus for training in full kit but went for a swim on his own before being withdrawn from the squad at 1pm.

The decision was taken by the England medical staff in conjunction with their counterparts at Tottenham after discovering that King's longstanding left knee injury - which prevents him from training between matches - had worsened in the past few days. It is understood that he picked up a knock after 20 minutes of Tottenham's 1-0 win over Chelsea on Saturday but managed to finish the match.

King's return to Tottenham without even training with England - who play Slovakia in a friendly on Saturday and Ukraine in a World Cup qualifier four days later, both at Wembley - is a source of some embarrassment to the FA after his selection was condemned as “mad, pointless and ridiculous” by Harry Redknapp, his club manager. But Capello believes it was a gamble worth taking and will risk upsetting Redknapp again in future.

Capello regards King, 28, as the best ball-playing alternative to Rio Ferdinand at centre back and will give him every opportunity to earn a place as the Manchester United defender's understudy. The Italian will consider him for friendlies against Holland and Slovenia at the start of next season.

“Ledley King has returned to ... continue his rehabilitation over the course of the international break, following discussions and assessments overnight by the medical staff of both the club and the England national team,” the FA said. “It has been agreed by both parties that the best interests of the player are served by continuing his individual training programme at the club.”

Capello has had assurances from King that he is desperate to resume an international career that has been on hold since a European Championship qualifying win over Estonia two years ago. King was named in Capello's first squad as manager last year, only to pull out because of injury. His knee problem remains a source of concern, but given England's inevitable injuries and suspensions, King could still play a valuable supporting role at next summer's World Cup finals should the national team qualify, even if he is fit to play only one or two matches.

Capello's sustained interest in King will infuriate Redknapp, who has won this particular battle over his club captain's training schedule but could yet lose the war. The Tottenham manager's outspoken criticisms have not gone down well with Capello, whose relationship with Redknapp soured after he described a 2-2 draw with the Czech Republic last summer as the worst performance he had ever seen by England and accused them of “killing” Steven Gerrard.

Other sources at White Hart Lane have complained of a lack of consultation by Capello on the subject of King, but Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman, and Franco Baldini, the England general manager, have been in regular contact over the past few days and have agreed that King still has the capability to play for club and country.

If he picked up a knock, why did we let him keep playing? Yes it's Chelsea but Dawson is a capable CB. Luckily he will have a nice rest this week and hopefully it's nothing major. I wish Harry would stop being so outspoken about Capello but imo he was right to argue for Ledley's return since it's in our club's interests. It seems like our King still wants to play for England, and it's his choice ultimately but I hope it won't impact his club career.

Haha 'best ball playing alternative to Rio Ferdinand'!!

Do me a favour, Rio is a great defender but Ledley is the best defender on the planet. He does have everything. I normally try to be measured when I contribute to this site but bugger it, Ledley King is just simply the best, no defender compares to him, even the best defenders have some form of weakness to their game - Ledders doesn't.

Rio has indeed come on immensely in recent years but Vidic is probably better most of the time. Plus Man Utd is good enough to rarely get pressured, and their defense gets cover from the midfield and hard-working strikers like Rooney and Tevez. Our defenders have had to deal with a changing back 4, a Gomes in poor form whose low confidence transmitted to the rest of the defense, and little cover from our soft midfield prior to Palacios. Ledley is the most naturally talented defender England have produced in ages, and among the very classiest. We really lost out on something amazing with his injury. Even so his performances when he's come in has been up their with the very best, and I believe that if not for his knee he would be England's first-choice centre half ahead of Rio and JT.

I think this could possibly be a positive for us, some people have mentioned a doctor that has cured similar injuries in italy and the fact that capello has mentioned that he believes king is like a legend like maldini and therefore is desperate to get him playing again so he may do everything he can to get him back to full fitness.
