I wasn't happy yesterday when it was rumoured and announced but I've got to admit, I've been totally swept up in all the things I've seen and read yesterday

From an employment law POV you're right. Termination without notice in breach of contract (i.e. wrongful dismissal) means any contractual restrictive covenants fall away.

But they might still agree restrictive covenants as part of an exit package.

As a side note, as long as termination isn't in breach of contract, it can be unfair and the restrictive covenants will still bind the employee.

I don't think his contract was terminated either. From what I read, he was relieved of his duties. That's not necessarily the same thing is it?

I’m genuinely excited by this, how far have we come that we are in the position to attract the most successful coach in the world? Jose obviously comes with many caveats, but there’s no doubt he’s a world beater and one of the very best in the business. This is like when we signed Klinsmann imo, it could very well be game changing for us.

Because maybe what we have been missing is a little bit of arrogance, a little bit of bullish pride. Like he said in his interview yesterday, “it’s not just a beautiful stadium, it’s the best in the world.” That’s maybe an attitude that’s been missing around the club.

This could all go horribly wrong, but it’s one hell of a statement of intent, and I think Levy and the board should be applauded for putting their balls on the line like this. The easy thing to do would have been to try and get another project manager like Rodgers, or Nagelsmann, or a yes man like Howe (imagine how fuming we’d all be if we were waking up to Eddie this morning.)

This is the brave choice. He needs to be backed financially and by the fans. We need that positivity and drive again that had evaporated over the last 12 months. I still think we have an amazing squad that doesn’t need too much tweaking, two or three key positions need top class replacements, right back, goalie, and possibly a central defender if Jan/Toby leave.

It's all so weird still.

Love poch and always will. But I'm looking forward to having a tactcial manager in charge when during a game if we're struggling he'll have 3-4 ideas to change it up. Poch was always so poor at that.

Trepidation.

If he changes his manner towards the press and media, then fine
If he changes his habit of calling out players in public, then fine.

I want to see signs that he is enjoying himself. A smile or 3 would be good..

I can't see how he can change his manner at all.

I hope I'm proven wrong, but I'm not holding my breath.

None of the above. I’ll give him a chance but I’m not ‘meh’. It could be the greatest or worst decision Levy ever makes. I’m apprehensive.

Having had more time to digest this. I just don't see how Jose is compatible with us(Levy). I honestly think he'll be wanting to spend much bigger than we could ever afford on big reputations and big wages. We could spend 150 million and him still complain. And it will eventually fall apart because of that.

ITK is that Joe Lewis always wanted him and that's why he's here, Levy doing what he's told, which adds up. But that's pretty shit for us, means the differences in transfer budget expectations won't of been thought through. I know everyone assumes these discussions will of been had, and this looked at logically. But imagine Joe will of just said go get him. And Levy will of said to Jose what he needs to make it happen. Like he always does... And it's not like Jose is going to of changed, if he didn't change for Man United he's not going to change for us is he. Thinking otherwise seems wishful at best and naive at worst.

In the short term, it'll work. But I don't see him lasting much beyond summer 2021. Maybe not even Christmas next year. And the downward spiral will come at some point. So to make this justifiable, he needs to win either the FA cup or Champions League this season, before he reverts to type. Anything else and it'll all end up pretty pointless. Christ, the Champions League money we'd get for top 4 we've just blown on his insane contract and sacking Poch.

So yeah, Jose, you need to win this year. Champions League, absolutely amazing. FA Cup, good. Anything else and this whole experiment will end up being a failure IMO. Good luck.

edit : I appreciate this is going to be an unpopular view. Just trying to look at things rationally, removing emotion and looking at the facts of what's happened in the past. Gotta get the predictions in early, and I'd be hugely happy to be proved wrong.

I've said it on here in other threads but I don't like the character of the man. I don't like that he publically abused a female doctor for simply doing her job. i don't like that he felt the need to poke a Barcelona coach in the eye because he lost a match. I don't like his sterile, defensive, one-paced style of football. I don't like his misuse of young players or how he publically bullied Luke Shaw.

My only solace is that during his time out of the game he has reflected on his ways and we see a new improved version of the man. And hopefully a change in his dour philosophy on football. I cannot argue against the fact he is a serial winner and that gives me some cause for optimism but i'm unlike others who seem to abandon any morals they have to support the manager. If he is chatting shit or doing something wrong I will call it out. And if his past actions are anything to go by then this is very likely to happen.

Ultimately I want Tottenham Hotspur to do well so I will support the club/team but for now I cannot get behind Mourinho the character or his football philosophy. If his future actions show that he has changed his ways then my opinion may change but currently I remain skeptical.

Excited.

I was really hoping it would be Jose we'd go for. It's like a marquee signing, a real statement of intent.

It feels like the right time, point to prove and refreshed.

Huge success, experience meaning he commands massive respect.

Feels like the stars are alligning for us, finally.

I don't get how anyone couldn't be seriously intrigued at the absolute minimum.

Right now with this group of players I don't believe a "Project" manager would be the right call. All managers have projects of course but Mourinho projects tend to get the best out of players in a short amount of time. That will suit our senior players and that's why I feel it's the pragmatic and right way to go at this particular time.

Coaches like Ten Haag or Nagelsmann would excite me as well - but in a totally different way.
Nagelsmann is the type of manager I wouldn't mind having post Mourinho. I fully understand that appointing Mourinho is likely a short term solution to bring instant success but at a possible price. At some point that concept too will be over and either Mourinho will have shifted into a character we want to keep, or he will have done his bit and leave after 3 seasons.

At that point we will likely have a squad with honours experience but with new young blood needed and in need of a more project based approach, at which point if Nagelsmann is available, I would pounce then (assuming he has not gone backwards himself in the mean time).

But right now I am excited at the change. Not that I wanted rid of Poch per say, but the stalemate of our football and squad motivation had to change and fast. THis was one option and at least it was quick and decisive. Time will tell if what was the right call, but let's hope so.

The first time we have hired a serial winner who has won more as an individual than our whole club. You cannot underestimate the psychological impact his presence alone will have on our players and the opposition. I'm not bothered how fans will see it, I care more about him actually instilling that win at all costs mentality he has built up over the best part of two decades. Our players have the ability, it was the mental aspect we severely lacked and now we have one of the best of recent times in charge. After watching and listening to his interviews yesterday I can't wait for us to get going under Mourinho. Not only the impact on players already at the club, but he may still have that pull for players we look to bring in.

Excited

Appointing a manager\coach like Mourinho is a statement signing by Levy, one which heavily hints that the club is prepared to do what it takes to properly compete for titles and trophies.

Really interesting. Looks like Moura and Son will be definite starters

Few minutes in (to the Independent article you posted) Mou talks about how they managed the Messi problem in a game with Inter . Successful too . This is in sharp contrast with Poch's dreadful decision to make no provision for stopping Messi at Wembley . Messi ran riot . He'd had a poor WC (2018) everyone being careful to keep him quiet ...

...But Poch ? he didn't bother as he was , as usual, concentrating on how we play . So naive . I won't miss this side of Poch and he'll need to up the cunning quotient in his game if/when he takes over at Bayern/Madrid etc if he is to survive/thrive imo .
