I find it difficult to see that some of these strikers that we have been linked to like Jones/Crouch, wold probably not score more goals than Bent.

Yes, what Bent offers ca be limited, but he is very good at getting the ball into the back of the net, so much so that he was third on the list of all strikers in the premier league last season for chances per goals scored ratio.

Not a bad bloody stat for an apparent shit player.

I say keep him, bring ina replacement for Pav, along with a younger, up and coming striker :)

Some people on here dont Appreciate the fact that goals win matches, and Bent scores goals wich is what he is paid to do.

He will score more goals than Jones and Crouch this season, if he remains inury free and played.

i would rather have neither, I dont like them. Bent would be awesome if we paid £5mil for him

Wouldn't he just? But then, you're talking 2004 prices. Even two years ago all £5m-£6m got you was a striker who was shit-hot in the Championship but not up to the top level (Earnshaw, Camara, Chopra, etc.) or a Premiership-standard striker with serious attitude/fitness problems (Mido). Get real.

Possible joke headlines for transfer:

Bruce gets Bent
Bruce's bent transfer
Bruce's bent signing
Bruce goes bent
Bruce splashes out on bent

Sure there's more...

According to the News of the World, they have now submitted a £15 million offer, the highest in the club's history. However, Spurs are still unwilling to accept less than the £16m they spent to buy him from Charlton Athletic.

I don't know where they get these facts, a little while back £9m was a good deal!!

Can't see him going for less then £15miillion tbh, thats the going rate for a player who scores that many goals...

Also the headline will read "Bruce splashes it all on Bent"

Bruce goes in harder for Bent, as Darren's Spurs fantasy disappears with a poof.

I think Bent has done as well as could be expected for us, he has given us a decent goal return. He is a goal scorer no doubt.

It's just a situation where the team is not really set up for him nor is he the type of player we would cater the team towards.

He does have something to offer, it is just that what he offers is also offered by Defoe and even Keane (goal scoring and movement) where as these players arguable have more to offer onto of that. Plus we do not need 3 players with the same attributes.

So as a manager decides his order of merit for such strikers it makes sense to sell the one 3rd in the pecking order, not because he is a bad player but simply because he is the most surplace to our requirments and exchanging him for someone who can compliment our other strikers makes more sense even if that player is not substantially better than Bent as an indivdual (as is the case with Crouch)

While Crouch may or may not be a significant upgrade on Bent he certainly would offer our squad alot more and balance our strike force...being much more likely to form successful partnerships with any of our other strikers.

I for one will have mixed feelings about seeing Bent leave, but I think all things considered it is the move that makes sense.
