I seem to recall the same being said when Defoe left Pompey to come back to Spurs.

yep aston villa are easily the bigger club, despite there recent and current fortunes i would say they are as easily as big as us historically

81 - Since Aug 2005 Darren Bent has scored 81 Premier League goals, only Rooney & Drogba (both 82) have more in the same period.

It seems odd to me. Wasn't Lerner trying to trim his costs? Picking up Bent, who is on a decent salary (although he does produce) would seem to counter what he's been doing and why MON left.

MON must now think Lerner is a stupid fanny. he aint wrong! backing Gerry ''bruno new zidane cheyrou'' houllier to the tune of 18 million on bent!? insane. what must the villa fans think of how the club is being run now? all gravy a year ago. then, boom!

Relegation insurance I guess. Their striker situation is far worse than ours with Heskey and Carew both being terrible and Agbonlahor isn't really delivering much this season either.

this a day after spending £6m on makoun should signal to levy that at least villa are intending to break the bank to stay up, we too imo should be breaking the bank to try and win the league

To be fair, we broke the bank to stay up when this was happening to us.

Palacios, Defoe, Keane and so on...

There have been some real pious posts about how badly Spurs and Harry treated DB, not forgetting his tweets.Sunderland helped ressuect his career, now an offer comes in and he can't wait to jump ship.

Sunderland fan here.

I've got to say when I initially heard the news I was quite disappointed, but looking at the offer and the way he has performed and his general attitude over the last few weeks, we would be crazy to turn it down.

His goal scoring record is excellent and we'll struggle to replace that but he is nowhere near the quality of Drogba/Rooney and his all round play is pretty poor. He is as weak as piss at times (losing 60/40 challenges etc).

Does that sound familiar?

By all accounts his agent has been pushing the club for a wage rise to 90k+ for the last 12 months, which we have refused to meet but Villa are prepared to pay.

I have a feeling if he goes for that fee, he will struggle to deal with the high price tag and expectations.

We'll see..

The way he has played this season, I wouldn't be surprised if this move has been touted to him for some months. Doesn't help himself on Twitter trying to be Mr. Sunderland either. Another example of football mercenary, throw money at a player and they will usually move.

He is actually exactly what we need.

A player who can play up front on his own.

He is frustrating to watch, but he will be effective with VDV behind him, I'l sure of it.

But I think Bent and HR were burning that bridge at both ends.

Levy will be laughing if Bent gets sold. That money will cover the SP transfer.

Good striker, but I don't think he suits our style of play. Didn't work first time, no reason to think it would work this time.

Except we've now changed our formation and have VDV just behind a striker. Surely Bent would be more suited to our current system.

Not saying I want him back as I think we can do better, but there's every reason to believe it'd work better playing the system we are.
