Team for Villa

You need pace for quicker transitions from defence to attack, when teams lose the ball and we counter them we need quick players to stretch their defence. In an ideal world though we need players with brains and pace and we don't have many players who are able to think quickly.

Plus some acceleration can see a wider player beat a full back which can open up a bit more space within a deep lying defensive set up. That's why I'd start Njie against Villa.

Well the other thing we need to consider is the fact that we have 3 games in 6 days next week, so giving someone like Dembele a rest is not necessarily a bad idea.

What's the current prognosis on Bentaleb incidentally? Would be good to have that option again with so many games coming up.

Thank goodness we went out of the League Cup!

Yeah its nice that we have over a week to rest up before a very tough November begins.

No idea on Bentaleb, thought he was close to returning weeks ago.

I'm a Dembele fan but no way do we play him and Dier in the CM2 for this one. The onus will be very much on us to break Villa down - who will surely come to contain.

Mason should come back into the CM2 for me. Training this week and then look to get 60-70 minutes out of him in which we'll dominate the ball so its a nice game to bring him back in.

I wanted Dembele/Eriksen/Lamlea in behind Kane for Bournemouth but against Villa I'd start Njie if Son isn't back - doubt he will be. We'll need some pace to help in braking their lines - and having Mason back will help with this too.

Dembele is a great asset for some games, particularly away from home, but this is a game where we'll want to move the ball quickly coupled with quick movement. We'd still be good enough to beat them with a variety of team selections in truth but I reckon this is the best available eleven for this one:

Lloris

Walker
Toby
Jan
Rose

Dier
Mason

Lamela
Eriksen
Njie

Kane

Subs: Vorm, Trippier, Davies, Dembele, Onomah, Alli, Townsend

Absolutely agree this is the best strongest team we can put out.

However, with the EL game on Thursday (and the AV game being on the Monday), I think we may need to rest N'Jie Clinton to have a fresh striker for the EL game, so slightly reluctantly would start Dembele against Villa bringing on Clinton as a fresh set of legs if required in the 2nd half.

IMO Poch may also start Alli as he's not done anything wrong, and bring on Mason later - but I'd go with Mason from the start for the reasons you give,

I can't see Mason AM and Alli CM, surely it'd be the other way around?

Dier Mason
Alli
Mason seemed so calm and confident on the ball in his 20 or so minutes yesterday, really think he can push on barring any injury reoccurrences

I see your point, but I imagine that Mason and Alli would rotate in match anyway, similarly to how Dembele and Alli did but with more variation (Alli and Dembele are actually quite similar whereas Mason offers a bit more of the old one touch push and run). I really think it would suit us too, the opposition defence would have two very different midfield threats to concern them.

Also, unlike most here I quite like Eriksen on the left, his crossing is far better than anyone else we have (awful corners aside) and it also allows him the freedom to run into spaces to shoot or pass that he otherwise wouldn't have. Most of his assists for us have come when he's played wide.

I prefer Eriksen from the left too, at least as long Chadli is out. I think Eriksen has his best games for us coming from the left, I felt sometimes he goes missing in the middle.
When he goes inside it gives space to Rose. Dier and Verts need to fill the spaces behind them.
In addition to that, the only other one in the squad I see contributing from the left is Son. Njie maybe for the finaly 15 minutes at the moment. Lamela, Alli, Dembele should be in the middle and not on the left side.
Anyway, a good rotation of the front four would be ideal.

Would like both Mason and Alli with Dier in this one. They are the best at making runs into the opposition box and give us genuinely threatening passing options.
I don't want another game of us passing the ball aroung a deep lying defence until we lose the ball. With Lamela, Eriksen, Kane and Mason himself able to split defences open with their passes, we should have enough to unlock them.

Unsure whether Poch will find it in his heart to bench Dembele after two good league games in a row, though

The Diamond midfield formation. Aided by two fast full backs and two up top. Interesting, this could work

I've been bangi this drum since the start of the season (think I even started a thread on it) - think we have the perfect squad for it and allows us to be flexible.

the team I have selected should beat A Villa even without a defensive midfielder. I have taken into consideration 3 games in 6 days. I have rested Dier as he will more likely be needed v Anderlect, and definitely v Arscum. after 10 games in he has already picked up 5 yellows, get to 10 too quickly and it's a 2 game ban. we are now coming up to 2 very busy months of football and rotation is going to be needed.

@Davo99 just curious. While I would understand that you would disagree with my selection, why the neg rep?

If it's not broke don't fix it so I'd go with the starting XI from Sunday.

Lloris, Walker, Rose, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Dier, Alli, Lamela, Dembele, Eriksen and Kane.

I'd be tempted not to play Lamela and Alli against Villa, both are a booking away from a one game ban, which I think would be the Arse game.
