It's very much appearing that José is getting another level out of Kane and Son. They've always been good together but they've never combined this well. Kane is looking like the best number 9 and the best number 10 in the league. If those two keep playing like this we're going to be be very hard to stop.

With Kane straying further up the pitch from time-to-time, I've been wondering if we will actually see Kane and Vincius playing together more than expected, i.e. that Vincius will be more than just a Kane substitute. I could see us deploying once in a while a 4-4-2, with Kane and CV up top, Son and Bale on the wings, a midfield 2 of Hojbjerb and TN or GLC, and the standard 4 across the back. That would explain the apparent focus on upgrading our CBs, since if we do just have a midfield 2 the CBs better be up to snuff. It probably wouldn't be our main formation, but may be a good way to mix things up or attack what we think is an especially vulnerable backline.

What you’ve described is actually not a far cry in terms of player movement from what Peps Barca did, at least initially. Obviously a far different style of football in terms of using a far more regular press of the ball and far more short passing, those two facets combined producing absolute domination, but in terms of how Højbjerg split the centre backs and how Kane is doing away from where he can be marked, it’s got real hints of how Busquets or Toure would split the centre backs and how Messi would drop from the right forward into midfield to play balls into Et’oo and Henry, whereas previously under Riijkaard he’d basically wait for the ball on the right and start running at defenders.

Makes sense considering both Mourinho and Pep were schooled under Van Gaal, who basically cultivated the original false 9 in Litmanen.

I rewatched this entire game last night and what struck me was how familiar it all looked.

And then I realised - it was basically Spurs at their peak under Pochettino. Reguillon/Aurier for Walker/Rose; Hojberb for Wanyama; Tanguy/Demebele.

The only difference was no Eriksen in midfield. But Kane basically did that.

I agree with your analysis - I think Mourinho now has several gameplans up his sleeve.

Totally different. Pochettino never was an advocate of playing the ball into space, which is the first thing I noticed after Jose came. Poch also played from the back, possession football to feet. High line. Its nothing like pochs team. Kinda comes across a bit like you giving credit where none is required or warrented. This is Jose team, give him the credit.

Sorry mate. Just telling it as I saw it. Especially watching the game in full on replay.

And I never said this was indicative of Mourinho's Spurs side. Just what this game reminded me of.

And if you think we never played long and quick with diagonals to a fast breaking Son, you've probably missed Toby's entire career with us.

Similarly with overloads to fullbacks - maybe missed most of Walker's best time at Spurs.

Like I said I just watched the game again. Hojbjerg dropping between the two centrebacks with our fullbacks pushing up high. Classic 2016 Spurs.

It's not an insult to Mourinho; nor a pump up to Poch. Just enjoying our supposedly "uber defensive" current coach having several strings to his bow. Something perhaps Poch could be accused of lacking?

Poch didn't invent football. Neither did Mourinho. There's always going to overlap. Stop being so precious. (y)

Had to log in for the first time in a year just to say you're wrong bud. Nothing in common with spurs under poch other than they both kick footballs

Cool thanks for offering your opinion on my opinion.

Wish you were here last night when I watched the full replay and thought to myself “gee this shape and pattern of play feels really familiar. Oh yes - it reminds me of our best and most effective shape and pattern under Poch. That’s an interesting development”

You could have have turned to me, slapped me (surprisingly rather than forcefully) across the cheek and gently chided: “No, silly. It’s nothing like that but thanks for trying”.

Really glad you logged in to tell me how to think. Cheers bud

I just caught the Chelsea 2-2 ‘battle of the bridge’ on sky and thought to myself that Jose would never have said we were nice guys after that match. We could’ve had 58 red cards. Amazing match, the only match I can watch again and again despite not winning. You can see just from this match alone why he loves Dier and Lamela.

No need to get shirty pal. I've bit my tongue at shite such as ''dembele was overrated'' and ''aurier has to start if in form'' so take it as a compliment

I think this is one of my favourite memes ever. Consistently funny for a variety of topics over the years and I can still look at the faces of the actors and crack a smile.
