17/18 is so underrated we were magnificent that year especially against the big sides. Getting sucker punched by Juve seems to have detracted from that.
The entire first half of the season was marked by a devastating 6 weeks around November and poor results in general vs. all of Chelsea, United, Arsenal and City. Of course City had an incredible year, and stole all the headlines. The 2nd half was really, really good once there was nothing left to play for besides the pure joy for football, which was ripe throughout the squad in that period and why they were rather good.

While I’d say our arrogant ‘Spurs way’ justification for failure is over the top at times, it’s not nonsense. Rowe was the Pep of his time, introducing a style of football (with heavy balls and mud heap pitches) to this country that was totally unique on these shores having studied it in Hungary. Before him every team was a Pulis wet dream. Then there’s the fact that when we were winning significant trophies consistently for three decades straight, we did so built around flair players throughout, whether that’s Jones and Greaves, Gilzean, Peters, Ardikes, Hoddle, Waddje, Gazza or even Cyril Knowkes. In the meantime, Liverpool, Everton, Arsenal, Villa, Nottingham Forest and Leeds of course all enjoyed greater success by way of championships, but those sides were all built on bullying the opposition and being snarlingly aggressive. Perhaps our lack of league titles owes to needing a bit more than that, but pretty much every successful Spurs side was also entertaining compared to pretty much all of our rivals.

At least this is what I was brainwashed with effectively from birth, as I’m still not 35 for a few weeks ?

Valid points sir, I was over the top in my use of nonsense. I think for me after seeing the best side I've ever seen at spurs not win a thing I'm just tired of the excuses and want to win whatever way it takes. I find our collective arrogance towards Jose and his style of football pretty laughable

100% agree with the bold sentence.

The 'Spurs Way' is honestly a load of nonsense. Every club thinks they have their own way, the only thing that matters is winning. Lets win first and worry about the style after. I want memories of trophies and us on the high road.
I disagree in fact. I think "the way" is rather important and when it is not evident in style of play and club management, fans tend to be rather unhappy (for instance AVB period, which actually wasn't THAT bad). Maybe it is true that we all would be happy if we won a title regardless of "way", but that's a moot point since we aren't near that level.
For me, "Spurs way" is financially sound, uncovering of unknown footballer gems, hard effort on the pitch and stylish bravery throughout. When we are not brave, when the football is dull, when we have stale and dates players, and we are not winning anything, as in not even most games, then what is left?

Clearly a lot of swinging back and forth on here, have to admit I voted for the horrified option back on day one. Seems to be a big switch based on the derby win, which was the only time that we've seen anything like the Inter Jose, which was him at his very best. But much as others have advised against knee-jerk reactions on the "Jose out" side, I'm also reserving judgement on rethinking my initial thoughts. I could get onside with the "Inter Jose philosophy", but too early to make that adjustment in my mindset. Derbies are rarely a true reflection of form in any sport, so will need to see.

I think both sides of the debate should just kick back, await the transfer window and see how next season develops. It might be good, it might be bad, who knows, but I'm in no doubt that Mourinho should be extended some patience for the rest of the year. Does not mean that I love what I'm seeing these days, but I understand the reasons for why we are performing as we do. I don't even think the Arsenal match was that great. I just love the result, but I didn't love the match.

The league table since Mourinho took over, we are 5th a point off 4th in the league. Not too bad from a side that couldn’t win away, couldn’t defend and was 14th.

Regarding why I myself am against Potter at this time.

Firstly, he hasn't really achieved anything. He did a good job in Sweden but this is hardly reason for a club the size of ours to be interested. His one season with Swansea in the Championship resulted in a 10th place finish.

He has been with Brighton for one season and outside of steering them just above the relegation zone while playing reasonable football he hasn't done much.

I am not going to write him off but at this stage he has done nothing remotely close to earning a job at a club like ours.

I am old enough to have seen numerous managers having a bright period and looking like the next big thing only to go onto mediocrity.
Very well. What about the point i was making? What if I said we could smoothly replace Jose with nagelsmann or someone less unproven but more attacking?

I was responding to why I don’t want Potter.

We have hired Jose so for now we give him at least a full season before thinking of where we go from there.

We’re all fickle ****s though. I’m sure if and when his style of football starts getting results on a consistent basis and, dare I say it, win us a trophy, then no doubt he’ll be lauded by everyone. But if we keep dropping points and hardly mustering any shots on goal then then people are naturally going to say wtf is this shit.

Doesn’t help he’s been such a prominent hate figure for a lot of us over the last decade or so too.

Is it arrogance? Arrogance is the absence of asking questions so you're suggesting that I'm not thinking critically.

I'm trying not to chuck around cliches and almost every post on the subject has included questions, both direct and rhetorical.

My questions for Jose are

1. Are you able to coach an entertaining style of football?
2. Are you capable if winning if you don't have the best squad or finances to completely rebuild?
3. Is this appointment a cultural fit?
4. What will happen if this fails?

Pretty good questions I think.

So far the answers I've had have been around Potter being undesirable. Are people being deliberately obtuse because the debate makes them uncomfortable?

I'm genuinely trying not to be arrogant, please don't call me that unless you can explain how.

And I agree, but I'm really worried that this will end badly and not just for the short term.

We were for the most part but we limped over the line badly towards the end of the season after the Chelsea 3-1. We got results but a lot of the performances were turgid in the last few. It was the start of Dembele's decline and Sissoko's emergence as a CM.
