Only problem I see, is they played right into our hands when we played them at home and absolutely dominated them and somehow still ended up losing.

They wont get away with it again, if we create that many chances.

Huge game. Their style means we will get more opening than the low block, but they are a very dangerous team who will also look to exploit our high line.

Also, much like they did against us earlier in the season, they seem to be able to grind out results too.

Really hope this is the game our midfield properly steps up. Bissouma, Sarr and Maddison back to early season form would make a huge difference.

Our biggest game of the season so far. Villa in good form and at home. Watkins and McGinn both on top of their game. Emery is starting to annoy me too.

Sonny, Madders, Biss, Rodders all one week better off, and maybe start to find some rhythm.

Both teams leave space in behind, so early balls over the top all day.

Hopefully they’re heavy legged, where we have VDV.

2-2 or we sneak a late 2-3

Romero, Van de Ven, Bissouma, Sarr, Maddison & Richarlison all missed that game - and we lost Bentancur after half an hour when Matty Cash assaulted him.

Multiple players played out of position, plus the only senior players on the bench that day were Forster, Dier, Skipp & Hojbjerg. We'd gone beyond 'bare bones' at that point, yet still should have won.

Not feeling that confident to be honest. We are not as good on the road and the team despite most of our players being back have not hit any form in terms of performance as yet really this year.

The game will be a bit more open but they have some real pace up front on the counter with Watkins, Bailey and Diaby so we need to stay switched on make sure that we are much more incisive to create and take our chances.

Hoping for a Maddison masterclass as we are due one.

Isn't this thread supposed to be 14 pages long? :D

I suspect they'll want to come out of the blocks for an early goal but it will be another cagey first half and, even if we're behind at half time, if we keep our heads and don't get sloppy we can get a result here, sure of it.

Just glancing back at the last match and the list of players out before it;

Feeling more confident about this one, great opportunity to even things out from November..

All about the mentality and stepping up the Intensity. Perfect game for Sarr in Cm.

Hard to call it really.

We have not won away since Forest on 15th December, which seems bad, but we have only actually played three away games in the interin, Brighton, Utd and Everton.

Time to get back to winning ways on the road - would be a real confidence boost, which I sense some of our players could do with ATM.

Do we assume that Villa will be going full strength against Ajax this evening?

Not sure how seriously they have been taking ECL.

Emery won the ECL four times. He always took it seriously.

He's won the Europa League - but the Europa Conference League in which Villa are competing still seems a bit tin pot to me (even with our trophy drought!)

Just tell the players before the game that it is already second half and we should be fine.

Did well at United away with more space, and that was without Son and Maddison.

See it being similar here but with these two could make the difference.

Very much assume they will. Even if they lose to us, they'll still be heavily favoured to get Champions League football this season. If they can combine that with a trophy, it'd be a historic season. Biggest height they've reached since winning the European Cup. Honestly better than any season we've had since 1982 (FA Cup + 4th in the First Division).

Watkins is on fire at the moment; looks absolutely superb. Thankfully so is VDV. That is going to be some match-up...

I'd be very surprised if they aren't full strength tonight. They'll want to put the tie to bed and if they can go to Amsterdam and win by two or three, which they very well could as poor as Ajax are these days, then they'll feel the positives of that will outweigh any tiredness.

How many times have we heard "They will be tired after the game in midweek" Only for the opposition to perform better than us.

Sometimes more games works in your favour as you stay in 'game mode'.

I think we are suffering a bit from this as you need games to build chemistry/confidence etc.

We have only played 30 so far. Villa have played 39 and tonight will be 40.

We will have played 41 games in total this season and some of our players will have only played 25-30 of those.

It's not enough to really get this system to click/fire 100%

Chelsea won the title under Conte playing less games but I'd argue that a more defensive system has more success that way as the patterns are less complicated and it's more about exploiting space - fresher to do that. Also, that team had won the title 2 years prior and were already well familiar with one another.

So I wouldn't be surprised to see Villa play better in their system.
