I am not sure about Carroll, he has had a great season so far but I am not as sure as some that he will continue to be a success. The new Shearer? The new Drogba? if he is than yea the money won't matter because the impact he would have on the team would pay for his fee (if he plays a key role in maintaining our CL status in the coming seasons)

Is he really that good though? Is he a one hit wonder? He certainly doesn't look a patch on the young Alan Shearer who burst on the scene at Southampton and more so at Blackburn.

He reminds me much more of Duncan Ferguson, a good player and physically strong (it's true he has many attributes we lack and would upgrade our current strike force)

I do wonder is he can continue his fine form in a better team a team not built around him and playing to his strengths and I wonder if he can reproduce his form next season and the season after or will defences begin to figure out his game and nulify his threat (as Dawson and KAboul did with relative ease....albeit with a bruise or two to show for their efforts)

I watched PL years and it showed Shearer in the season Blackburn missed out on the league to Man U and he was immense, so much more to his game than Carroll has shown thus far (infact I doubt if it wasn't for the NEwcastle link anyone would even have compared the two yet)

I am very much unconviced and think £30m would be insane, smacks of the type of deals we made for players looking great in smaller clubs playing to their strengths such as Bent and Bentley who went on to be sold for significantly less than we bought them.(or should I say their value fell considering Bentley has not been sold just yet)

Again, to be fair to the club, its not always transfer fees that determine the value of a player.

Dzeko may only be 27m but his wages are probably 160-200k per week. Carroll may accept as little as 70k a week.

The top clubs can always get better players for cheaper because they can afford the high wages.

Why would Mike Ashley care how much Carroll would be getting paid when he moves?

He is asking why being able to afford higher wages would enable a club to sign a player for a cheaper signing fee in responce to the previous statement

so I understand his question why would Mike Ashley care how much Carroll would be getting paid after he moved, because he is saying the wage you would offer Carroll would have no influence on the transfer fee Newcastle would accept to sell him.

We would be crazy if we paid £30 mill for Carroll! Would be the worst buy ever done by Spurs. For £30 mill you can get Lukaku + another player!!

It does sound like a hell of a lot of money, and to be honest I doubt we'd pay it. If we sign this kid, it will be for a fee that our chairman deems acceptable and unthreatening to our progress as a club, just like every other player we have ever signed under ENIC, and that will be good enough for me. Carroll is a player who would take us forward, he is already a very good number 9 and will only get better, especially if he has players of the quality we have surrounding him rather than those at Newcastle.

And has good ball control and is pretty quick and has good technique to his shot and is brilliant in the air and holds the ball up well and has a bit of a dribble and works his arse off...

Lukaku is unproven in UK and if as suggested he is set on a move to Chelsea (or indeed Real want him) it wouldn;t matter what we offered his club as he would probably refuse to come to us.

But I agree with you £30m for Carroll would be the craziest business I ever heard.

Well that Sandra is a special talent!

Anybody who actually watched the kid play rather than just the MoTD highlights/ read the rags must know that he's more than just a Big Dunc on a hot streak. The wide range of goals he scores should be evidence enough that he has genuine finishing technique, and he is very composed for someone who's been around 2.5 seasons. He's only getting better as well.

I bet those writing him off would have hated Bobby Smith.

The rumours are circulating up here (in Newcastle) that a deal for around 22m has been done but won't be announced until after tomorrow's derby...

How true this is I don't know? Heard from the manager of the hotel Newcastle are currently staying at before the game...

I am in no way ITK, please don't crucify me!

I'd rather we were putting this money towards other players

22 million would get you to the table for Lukaku. I know there are many clubs in for him but he has a mature head on his shoulders and his family will do whats best for him. Whats to say that Spurs are the best option for him, that Levy portrays that to his family and they feel the same. I feel we would have a chance and that we would be a really good option for him at this time of his career.

My money would be on Lukaku achieving more in football than Carroll.

I remember similar hype about Blondel, he was supposed to be the next big thing to come out of Belgium and he was an unmitigated disaster, I would be more in favour of Lukaku if he came out of a credible league.

Remember this guy we signed a while ago from Croatia?
