SPURS TARGET £20M ANDY CARROLL

TOTTENHAM are lining up a stunning £20million New Year swoop for Newcastle striker Andy Carroll.

The England new boy only signed a fresh five-year contract with the Magpies in October.

But Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is understood to be pushing ahead with plans to land the 21-year-old target man in the January window, ahead of Chelsea and Manchester City.

New manager Alan Pardew has vowed to keep Carroll but Spurs are ready to test the resolve of Toon owner Mike Ashley and could offer Robbie Keane or Peter Crouch in part-exchange.

But Spurs boss Harry Redknapp last night appeared to rule out a move for West Ham midfielder Scott Parker.

Redknapp admitted he could be in the market for a young midfield player in January, but said: “Don’t get me wrong, I like Scott Parker, but at £15million and 30 years of age he’s not a Tottenham buy, is he?

“Daniel Levy wouldn’t buy a player of that age for such a lot of money and for big wages.”

He'll be an upgrade of what we have, but not significant enough to help us to the next level.

Agree. Practically no signing could not improve our current frontline.

I don't like Carroll especially - his technique is practically non-existent and I don't think his Kevin Davis/Duncan Ferguson game will complement our style.

I would rather we got an intelligent technical player who happened to also be good in the air, rather than a pure battering ram.

bollox, some of the volleys he executes take alot of technique and he even showed abit of link up play on afew goals in that vid

with the ammount of crosses we swing into the box in matches he would have a field day and he's only going to get better

I'm all for us signing this kid up asap

He's like Crouch, but he can actually direct his headers, is much stronger and has a better shot and an impressive volleying ability. I actually think his movement off the ball is pretty intelligent too, and his hold up play is fairly refined. He's got the 'pick a game up by the scruff of the neck' ability of some of the best English players, and on his day he's pretty unplayable. He's not the finished article and he has some personal issues, but he does dominate defences in a way few strikers do, and that's something that would benefit us hugely.

There's a select few strikers that are more conclusively better than him, like Dzeko, Tevez, Benzema, Gomez, Llorente, and Torres. But if as is likely we cannot afford or attract any of those superstars, someone like Carroll (or possibly Falcao at Porto, who I see as a similar level of player) would still improve us as a team and so I'd rather we got him in January over buying no one. This season is too important not to upgrade our strikeforce, we really need to push on and get a top four spot.

He has bail conditions let alone any arguement about his abuilities.
For him to move away from Newcastle, I'm guessing Kevin Nolan still wouldn't want to put him up, whom ever would sign him would have to clear his residence with a court first and somebody put up a security/surety.

I think Carroll has alot to prove both as a player and as a person before we should be spending that sort of money on him. One good half season does not a £20m player make and I'm not sure that putting him in London would help his 'questionable' personal life.

He looks like he has all the attributes to be an excellent Premier League striker but I'm not sure he's worth such a huge risk just yet.

I didn't realise it had all gone away. I suspect after the reaction he got Newcastle isn't the most welcoming place to be at the moment, perhaps he'll wanta change of scenery to get himself sorted out. Although I think Newcastle would be mad to sell him, he's been the fulcrum of their success all season. But if rumour is to be believed, Hughton might have gone because he didn't want to sell, and Ashley is not a predictable man...

Where did £20m come from? We better not pay that much for him. I'd take him for under £15m. We shouldn't pay over the odds again on another English player. We did it with Bent, then with Bentley, surely not again. I'd rather we turn our attention to Conor Wickham if Carroll is valued this highly.

Wickham's price is 10 million. You want us to go for someone who has hardly played over Carroll. Carroll is exactly the type of player we need. A battering ram. He's Crouchy with Power. Sign him up. Well worth 20m in todays climate. He's only 21, one for now and the future.

Yes thats exactly what I want us to do. I'd prefer us to sign a young English player before he becomes overpriced. I'd rather go the way of Huddlestone, Dawson and Lennon than Bentley and Bent.

Wickham is only 17 and he's already showing signs of a quality player in the Championship. Carroll played great in the Championship and he's playing well so far in the Premier League. But he's not worth £20m (yet at least).

We'd basically be paying our record transfer fee on a player with potential, when the same money can go on the finished product. £20m should be enough for a world class striker, not a potentially world class one who may not reach those heights.

I also totally disagree with your theory that we need a battering ram up front. Thats absolute bull, sorry but it really is. We've never needed that type of player because we're not that type of team. We need another technically gifted striker who can link with the likes of Bale, Modric and VDV, who is intelligent, consistent and clinical in front of goal. We need a Berbatov not a Carroll.

We'll have to agree to disagree mate, The amount of chances Crouch gets week in week out that he misses are in excuseable. Our team is crying out for a player like Crouch who can finish. Carroll imho is that palyer. We need someone who can hold the ball up as well as weighing in with their fair share of goals and adds a bit of power and steel to our team. All our current CF's are Teflon when it comes to holding the ball up.

I agree about the holding the ball up. I just dont agree with the battering ram approach. I do think its important to have the strength to hold players off though. I'm thinking more along the lines of a Berbatov. Someone big and strong enough to hold players off, with great control, technique and can finish chances.

I reckon there is a deal to be done here with players going the other way too. He'd be a great signing for the right price. Still has a lot to prove but maybe thats a good thing

I agree with you mate but the Berbatov's of this world are very few and fair between. The days of picking them up for 10m are even fewer. If we could send Keano in the opposite direction with 12-14m I think it would be a great deal.

It works for Drogba at a big club, so I don't see why it wouldn't work for us too. Obviously that's not all there is to his game, but I don't think that's all there is to Carroll's game either. But having a battering ram is exactly what you need for the kind of games we struggle in, against lower quality physical sides like Stoke and Blackburn.
