BT were saying thats Newcastles first defeat at home since new years day, excellent result.

Sounds impressive, but they didn't mention that there were only two wins in the other six games since then, with 4 draws including against the bottom two sides Norwich and Aston Villa - so that makes Newcastle's home record in the PL this year LWDDWDDL, and their final home game is against Liverpool.

Still, Newcastle have been a bit of a bogey side for us in recent seasons, so I was relieved we got the win.

(They also lost at home to Man City in the FA Cup QF end of June)

Just because you want to support the manager and team doesn’t mean you can’t call a spade a spade. The football is awful there really is no disputing that.
I'm disputing that. The football is pragmatic. We don't have the virtuosos to deliver what we did 3-4 years ago, when we had a midfield, centred around Mousa Dembélé, that would grind up opponents, the two most effective attacking fullbacks in the league, a top creative no.10 and a world-class striker in the process of discovering himself, along with a rock-solid defensive partnership and the fastest goalkeeper in Europe.

Teams change, they go up and they go down. We need to play a different style now.

We have two world-class strikers now, but the defence is in transition and the midfield lacks the totally unique Dembélé and Eriksen's unpredictability. Until we can get Ndombele or Lo Celso to replace what Eriksen provided, we'll need to be more pragmatic and predictable and rely upon Kane and Son to deliver enough goals to keep us at the upper end of the table.

That's how it is. We can't expect every season to have the chemistry of 2016 or 2017.

I agree with much of this but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s just boring and a very hard watch at the current moment.

I don't see how people are saying this is so awful? Yes, our passing could be better and that would open up a lot of options but it's not like we are just booting it long. The tactics are not the problem with why our attack is slowed down. It's the terrible passing in midfield.

I think people have it stuck in their head that Jose is boring and that is all they can see when Spurs play now.
I even think its the final third of the pitch, do the hardwork in getting the ball up there with players moving in to positions..... then we either give it away or completely slow the tempo. Its odd. Im enjoying the run to be honest.

I don’t think today it was awful at all actually.
Sure it’s not peps man.city but it was fine, definitely watchable and very effective :)
Do you really think it was that bad?
We had some nice spells of possession, our attacks are a real mixture of threats from open play, set pieces, crosses, through balls, counter attacks. It’s very different to what we are used to and its more of a mid to low block so naturally a little less high pressing, intensity and possession but I thought today was really quite fine.
COYS.

It's just not my cup of tea. I find it really sterile and reactive. I want to see more quick attacking moves and one-touch football.

Hmm I had separate bets on us to win 3-1 with Son and Kane as first goalscorer.

Betfair has paid both bets... I assume they'll fix the mistake and take back the Kane winnings?

the Betfair computer was so confused that spurs had scored 3 goals that it lost all track of its senses and paid out.

I’ve had a fucking horrendous day, attending the funeral of my colleague’s 19 year old daughter who committed suicide last week. Broke my heart to watch the man try to muster up everything he has left to support his family. Add to that some difficulties around work (not got time to explain that, but it’s incredible) and a text from one of my oldest friends telling me his 3 month old daughter, who has spent the last 4 weeks in hospital, needs to have surgery on her heart it’s been fucking difficult. So I’m very pleased to a) get back home to see my boys, wife, cat and dog, and b) to see us put in another performance which makes you believe the lads do actually care

3-1 away given recent form, I will take that. Also great to see both Kane and Son on the scoresheet.

Just watching Arsenal and Liverpool now. Can tell Arsenal are winning, the Emirates crowd is way louder than usual.

Scrappy, but I'm happy.
Better again though still some slapdash play
from the usual suspects.

We scored 3 from 8 attempts,, 5 on target
they scored 1 from 22, attempts 6 on target.
World class strikers made the difference. and we've got two.

That was not awful. Bournemouth was awful, not tonight.

We created, we defended and showed the desire to come back from the equaliser and then to kill it late on.

Newcastle are a decent side under Bruce. They've some real live wires with a decent hard working spine.

Anybody who thought that was going to be pretty on the eye are deluded.

Fourth game in ten days, up against their strong home form, I'd say that's a very pleasing result with lots of positives to take.
Spot on.

They had more possession than us
They had more shots than us
They had more shots on target than us
They had more corners than us
They had a territorial advantage for most of the game
They pressed more effectively than us
They hit the post and Shelvey put a free header into row z that he should have scored from
......But our strikers are better than theirs so we won.

Newcastle were as good as, or better, than us. Or, to put it another way, we were not even as good as Newcastle - a team with seven of their squad injured who even their most ardent fans think are crap. Mourinho has mentioned fatigue. That's bollocks. We only have three players out, he didn't have to play the same team as on sunday, and even then he had the opportunity to use five substitutes if players were tired.

I'm happy with the three points and I'm happy with the effort of the players, but if anybody thinks that was a good performance then they were either high or watching a different game.

People are getting hung up on 'good performance'.

Give me a winning performance irrespective of anything else all day everyday!

I think that you might have to get used to a different style of football than under Poch. The end game is to become resilient and ruthlessly effective but the football will not be based on possession or necessarily the most shots. We definitely aren't where he wants the team to be at the moment though.

I know Jose is selecting them but I agree, the current CM2 is nowhere near up to standard and is a major reason for the dull football. I have no idea what will happen re. Ndombele, but I think he is prioritising the results and defensive solidity for now.
