Maybe, but he's voluntarily just ended his career as a top level referee. He won't get selected for the World Cup refereeing in Saudi Arabia.
I think he's hanging up his whistle, his new job is as 'Head of referees'.

Whether you like him or not it's bad news for the English game that our refs are being tempted to move abroad.

You could make much more difference with video review technology - or just by having a load more assistant refs on a secure wireless voice link - than you could by having very slightly better referees. If a talent drain accelerates change, good.

"His new post will involve working with Saudi referees to improve performance and professionalise the set-up, while he will also take charge of some league games."

But it won't accelerate change and video technology will only be used in certain situations. It's not a replacement for having a good ref on the pitch.

I don't get the angst here. The guy is going abroad for a while with his career and earning a shitload of tax free money to do so. I did the same, came back richer and had a whale of a time doing so.

More luck to him. Life is all about experience and broadening your horizons.

Shame that he has gone. He is one of the better referees. People on here just don't like referees. The one last night in our game was a **** :)

He refereed the champions league final and the europa league final last year so people obviously rate him and he is one of our better referees.

Weird move for him as it looks like he has 'retired' for a big payday adding little value to a country that no-one follows from a football perspective. I guess once he has done that for a couple of years he will be back in perhaps a better initiative for world football.

Wasn't it Clattenburg who made that terrible play on decision after Nani's handball against us? One of the worst piece of refereeing I have ever seen, why would you ignore a handball in that part of the pitch? Certainly no reason to play advantage.

I would say he was decent but had moments which defied common sense, perhaps due to wanting to be centre of attention who knows.

Anyway the worst referee bar none is Chris Foy for his performance in our match against stoke, gave us nothing. We could have had 15 players on the pitch and he would have still seen to it that we lost.

Is that the one when Gomes put the ball down to take a free kick that hadn't been given?

i can never get over the fuss about it, no free kick was given and no advantage was played a legitimate goal. Play to the whistle.

How can you not get it? He was rolling the ball around in his hand and a free kick wasn't given. Yes, play to the whistle - but the fact that the whistle didn't go is my issue. Obviously Gomes was a fucking idiot, but Clattenburg should have given the free kick, obviously.

I understand why people were annoyed that a free kick wasn't given, but it wasn't (For whatever reason Utd could argue it was a penalty) so you play on like Nani did.

Yeah, I don't blame Nani, though his dive was deplorable in that clip. I blame Gomes' weak mentality mainly

Or maybe you should blame Clattenburg... ?(y)

Secondarily, yes. The main person to blame is Gomes, though. As you can see/hear by watching the clip, the whistle didn't go. His mentality was shocking, he was so fragile for a lot of his time with us - the fact that Nani was alert to the fact the ball was still in play whilst he was fannying about epitomises that fragility.

I don't think you can, I doubt he could see that Nani handled it, in which case he can't give it. Scholes was asking for a penalty which he didn't give so it was entirely Gomes' fault.

I've never really rated him as a ref and he's made some howlers in his time but i don't think this was one of them.
