I might add that he would compliment sess really well if we were to use the lopsided full backs next season with sess the more attacking. Also, surely we’re due to have a ligue 1 player be a success right?
This could work very well as Sessegnon is very attack minded, therefore having say Celik as the more defensive of the two will work in our favour in two ways. 1) He appears to be more defensively competent than Aurier. 2) When Aurier is our outlet, Davies is very ponderous when trying to support on the left (too slow and tends to play side ways/backwards passes) whereas with Celik he’s got a decent amount of pace and attacking ability to be of a more beneficial use.

Given sess was nowhere to be seen this season, not sure I would have high expectations of him suddenly being thrust into the team as first choice LB all of a sudden.

This guy sounds decent, but I really think we need some real pace at fullback.

Has a lot to work on but the man seems to be a real quality defensive RB who can also move the ball forward well. I like it, especially if we want to give Sess LB minutes. If we are selling KWP and Aurier buy Celik and Castagne and you've upgraded your FB positions while also giving yourself a better chance if either is a bust.

Seems like a good purchase, probably better than all those linked so far although Castagne has more about his attacking game. Then again if we sell Aurier we could still do with buying another fullback so could go for both.

Only other issue for me at least is that Davies and Celik leaves us quite impotent going forward. Will wait and see how we look during the first half of next season, but I really want to see more attacking play like how we were managing before lockdown (the wonky 3241).

People probably need to get used to the idea that we won’t be bringing in two right backs if Aurier and KWP go. Jose uses versatile players as his full back depth, like a full back who can play on either side (tbf Castagne fits this mould) or a centre-back who can play at full back. He doesn’t build a squad with two full back options on either side.

Liverpool play the same full backs every single game. I don’t even know who their back up left back is, I’m only guessing that Gomez was used as back up right back?
Why are we in need of 4 full backs all fighting for 2 spots. Surely it’s better having a settled back 4. It’s not like Poch era when full backs were two of hardest workers either, we don’t need to rotate.
Rather we just signed a right back who starts 40 odd games like Trent does for Liverpool. Have Tanganga filling in Europa easy games or cups.

You answered yourself kind of there. Jose does like to have a small yet reliable group of defenders. Castagne would be his Azpilicueta or Coentrão I'd guess with Celik being his more defensive ever present like Ivanovic.

If we were going with Tanganga as the long term CB that can play at FB option then we'd want the linked RB to quite offensive which Celik is not.

Celik is someone who can create spaces with his passing in possession. He’s not going to bomb into the final third with a burst of pace and whip in a cross. He will cross when his team has had a long spell of possession and the ball is worked out to him, like serge in the wonky formation, not so much in our recent counter attacking system. His playmaking from deep right is a major boost to the attack though. Regarding castagne, he will have to play in the advanced position what serge was in as he’s only known a 3 back for the past couple of seasons. He can obviously adapt, but I personally think that celik has enough about him going forward to say I’d rather have him, provided we can afford them both and one doesn’t take away too much from the budget.

So, bigger than Aurier and better in the air. Decent on the ball and a good passer. More of a defensive mind set than Aurier but still makes a few mistakes. Not the best going forward, but reasonably competent. Good scope to improve.

Don't we already have this player? He's called Juan Foyth and won't cost us a bean.

But does Celik put the fear of god into you everytime he's 1v1 and make a game changing error every other match?

Foyth is massively talented on the ball but I get heart palpitations every time he plays. I do like him but I just can't in any way see Jose persevering with him for long enough to iron out the weaknesses in his game. Better to either loan him out or sell him IMO.

So, if KWP is moving on, and we are entertaining the sale of Aurier, are we then going to try and sign a defensive-minded RB like Celik and a more attack minded one like Castagne? Or do we just move forward with whatever RB we buy and Tanganga, while selling KWP/Aurier?

I’d go for both Celik and Castagne as they’re both competent at right and left back.

Çelik, Castagne, Kim, Hojbjerg, Wilson and a creative player would be a good little window and give JM the depth and balance he’s after, along with the ability to have two decent XIs to play with for sure.

I won’t pretend to know this guy’s game, but if we’re doing a defense first, slower Wan Bissaka type I really worry for the starting 11 against a packed defense. With the inside forwards of Son and Lucas/Bergwijn there is a huge need for overlapping crosses and pace from the fullbacks. If there isn’t at least high level level pace or creativity coming from Davies/Celik it can allow the defense to narrow heavily, leaving only space in wide areas. Sounds like a recipe for 0-0, or even worse, leave CBs caught out for a counter attack as the fullbacks are forced to operate in final third space offensively and make mistakes higher up the pitch. Basic stuff, it’s why the much maligned Kyle Walker goes for 50m and why Semedo, Alphonso Davies. and Bellerin, despite making tons of mistakes, are still held in such high regard by their clubs.

I wish KWP was just a little bit better at everything he does. 10% more pace, dribbling skill, physical strength, tackling and crossing and I’d honestly feel comfortable with him starting 25+ matches.

I would say the latter. Especially if we sign Hojbjerg who has had minutes at RB before.

Very old school type of a player and signing, think we should look for next Rose and Walker, not next Corluka and BAE. Both were good but modern football asks more from fullbacks.

And yet over the past two years I’ve been yearning for a quality RB like Corluka.
