I hope we cuck them for Celik, Hojbjerg and Josh King.

Everton threaten to disrupt Tottenham Hotspur deal for Turkey full back Zeki Celik

Tottenham Hotspur face competition from Everton for another of José Mourinho’s preferred summer recruits: the Turkey full back Zeki Celik. The Times understands that the Merseyside club have entered discussions with Lille about signing the 23-year-old, who is valued by the Ligue 1 side at €20 million (about £18 million).

Celik has spent two seasons as Lille’s starting right back, during which the club finished second and then fourth in France’s top tier. Powerful in defensive duels and a good provider of crosses, he has been earmarked by Mourinho as a component of the “better, more balanced squad” he is attempting to put together in this transfer window.

The former Istanbulspor defender would provide Mourinho with a second specialist option at right back, a position that was important in the tactical shape he deployed upon taking over at Tottenham in November. Alternatively, Celik’s purchase could allow Tottenham to explore the sale of Serge Aurier to AC Milan.

Although Aurier, 27, played more Premier League minutes than any Tottenham player except Toby Alderweireld last season, his unpredictability in defensive areas contributed to the club’s disappointing sixth-place finish. With two years remaining on Aurier’s contract, Milan have suggested that a fee of €15 million would represent fair value for the former Paris Saint-Germain defender.

Funny if we just gazump Everton for every single one of their targets this summer. Limit them to mediocrity. It’s what Chelsea used to do to us so only fair lol

Decent, solid, and aggressive player. There is a young crop of good defensive players coming through the Turkish system. One to consider if he is available, he would be an upgrade to Aurier.

Interesting this comes out after yesterday’s news of Aurier/AC Milan. Celik in, Aurier out would be fine.

Yes yes on this one- very similar to other José right backs, price is right and he’s a sizable upgrade on what we’ve got.

Mainly Lille since Sacramento joined. Like others have said, very solid player and a definite upgrade in the position. Good height at 5’11, he uses his body very well to ease opponents off the ball and shield the ball. Aggressive when someone receives the ball, he likes to win the ball on the front foot. Very impressive 1v1 defender, and disciplined and aware of players and space around him. He doesn’t shine as much in the attacking third, but he can still cross a ball. Only picked up a couple of assists this season, but it seems we’re moving towards more balanced full backs so I’m not worried about him having to play the winger role serge has. His main contribution to the attack is his long balls over the top down the right, and he is accurate with his line-breaking balls into the striker (osimhen this season). He gets the ball and is either conservative and safe, or he picks a teammate out in a great position. Doesn’t give the ball away and few lapses of concentration when in possession. Isn’t the type to take people on, and tends to foul quite a bit. Not as precise at winning the ball as say wan-bissaka. He’s quick but not rapid, I’d say in between serge and max aarons in terms of pace for a measuring stick. A similar player would probably be azpilicueta, but slightly quicker. Very dependable defensively. And can be useful in attack.

A solid defensive fullback with the potential to initiate attacking play is much more preferable than an attack minded fullback who lacks defensive focus

Given that Everton usually end up buying pretty average players, for large fee's, is stealing their transfer targets the best strategy? The joke might be on us!

I might add that he would compliment sess really well if we were to use the lopsided full backs next season with sess the more attacking. Also, surely we’re due to have a ligue 1 player be a success right?

This could work very well as Sessegnon is very attack minded, therefore having say Celik as the more defensive of the two will work in our favour in two ways. 1) He appears to be more defensively competent than Aurier. 2) When Aurier is our outlet, Davies is very ponderous when trying to support on the left (too slow and tends to play side ways/backwards passes) whereas with Celik he’s got a decent amount of pace and attacking ability to be of a more beneficial use.

Turkey doing something right at the moment, great defensive talent coming through in recent years.
Not only Celik on the right, but Merih Demiral, Ozan Kabak and Caglar Söyüncü to chose from in the middle. We've been linked with Kabak from money needing Schalke 04 as well, reckon him and Celik would pair up well on the right side of a defence.

If this is the guy, I hope we just freaking do it. Doesn’t seem like an unreasonable asking price. We should know from our assistant coaches.

Get it done and over the line.
