I have no disrespect for ex footballers who don't speak well on the tele, I wouldn't expect a great speaker like Stephen Fry to be a good footballer, there's no shame in it but maybe it's not the career for some of them.
I would also add to this that it isn't the ex-player's fault if he's thrown in front of the cameras before he's had enough training and can be considered "ready". The producers should always do off camera tests before they decide whether to let them on.

That's below the belt...As much as I get the North London rivalry, I take my hat off to Merson for keeping on the straights. You get the sense he'll be totally out of it without a job in football and to be honest I'm happy football has found room for all types though needs to improve on other areas.

I'd imagine other fans find him quite amusing and entertaining. The problem for me is he just spouts so much nonsense about us. Would be ok if you had someone like Micky Hazard on there to set him straight.

Merson's one of those that balances out the eloquent ones quite nicely.
Sometimes he talks utter gibberish, but you get the feeling he knows it, and takes it all in his stride.
He lightens the mood a lot of time on Soccer Saturday.

The South East Radio sports new bulletins here in Ireland have been reporting on tonight's CL match for Man City and also last night's Chelsea and Liverpool results/defeats.

Not a single mention of Tottenham in there. Not surprised at all, normal. Quite pleased about that. Fuck 'em.

It does seem that the vast majority here in Ireland are Liverpool fans. It's as if there is no other team! At least the shop owner next but one is an Arsenal fan, I've had 2 bets with him, over us and them, and won both. It's my beer top up.:happy:

You and @TheChosenOne will know better than me, but wasn't there a lot of migration from Ireland to Liverpool seeking work at the shipyards many moons ago?
They will have eventually buggared off back to Ireland to retire which might explain the Scouse love in over there.

I remember Greaves commentating on a game and at half time he told the truth and said the game was shit and not worth watching. While true the channel never used him again.

True analysis will never be more important than ratings.

Essentially pundits are there for entertainment more than being informative. But I see no need to be entertained by people who aren't entertaining.

It's not the same really. Nobody has a pop about Stephen Fry's footballing "tekkers" because he's not trying to be a professional footballer in the first place. It's more like if Stephen Fry wangled his way into a PL starting 11 purely by knowing the right people/having the right agent, even though he was no good at football.

As I said, it's probably not the career for some of them although I suspect if nobody gave Fry a trial and put him straight in the side they can't really blame him, he might think he's good, lots of us think we're better than we are.

.

Very true straight across the Irish Sea from Dublin.
Wayne Rooney would be a prime example of 3rd/4th generation Irish stock (and many other things)

Still fewer than came to London.

Not for here but all the major cities got plenty.

'Champions League runners up Tottenham' actually got a mention in the 2 0/C sports news.
(We are in Greece for the match tonight.
.
Now that Liverpool and Chelsea defeats are old news of course.
.
Ploughing championships (2nd day) here in County Carlow is the biggest news at the moment.
Over 100k attended yesterday.

Manchester United are the most widely supported team in Ireland. There can be NO doubt about this.

Liverpool certainly next. I was surprised just how many of them came out of the woodwork over the past year or two. Then again, they were the obvious team to support from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s (in the same way that Ireland is teeming with guys over the age of 55 who support Leeds United).

I know not one but TWO old guys here in Kilkenny who support... Blackpool! Stanley Matthews, 1953 and all that.

I saw this comment from Michael Brown on the BBC website...

"We are being critical of Spurs and where they've come from, but they've got this new stadium and some good players. Can they keep progressing and not be this selling club?"

Not sure where he's been for the last 6 years but does he really think people still see us as a selling club?

We cant even manage to sell the players we want rid of, let alone selling the ones we want to keep!

Ha brilliant. You should have gone another 10 miles and visited me!

As it happens the daughter is attending Grennan Equestrian College in T.town for the next 9 months so there will be occasions when I have spare time up that way. (She even has to do some Saturdays and Sundays

I'll send you a PM sometime when I know more. (Instead of clogging up this place)

It seems the anti Tottenham punditry is not only Talk Sport and sky its now the BBC and BT .
Can they not give us a break and move on to some other club as its getting tiresome .
I used to enjoy the pre and post match discussions I now watch the matches only and listen to no discussions as I know what will be said.
Kane and other top players should leave the club.
Poch is leaving at any moment.
They have a group of players wanting out therefore something is wrong behind the scene.
They don't pay high enough wages.
They do not invest in players.
They must win a cup or all the players and their wives will want out.
Same old same old its like Groundhog Day I know I have missed some of the often said jibes but its getting silly now can't they just give it a rest or find a new whipping boy.
