On a positive note - only five days left before we can move for Bernard

Stiker wise I guess our options are down to Soldado, Leandro, Dzeko and maybe Higuain if we use Bale as bait.

Well yesterday was anti-cli-fucking-matic wasn't it! So wonder who is the next on the "list"?

I agree with Grey Fox, that Benteke wasn't even on our list. It was an opportunity that suddenly came up that we looked at but judged wasn't viable.

I think Villa and Leandro have been the two on our list that we've made serious moves for. The fact that Benteke is a completely different type of forward to these two says a lot IMO - i.e. that any interest was reactive on our part, rather than part of our plan.

I think we dodged a bullet here.. Benteke is good, really good and really would like to see a CF added but 25-28m£? Insane. For that kind of money I would like to see a more established forward. Van Persie cost what 25m£ although in the last year of contract, Soldado 20-25m£(?), Negredo went for roughly 30m£ and Jovetic also. So to pay that kind of money for a guy who haven't played in europe, one season premiership and regurlaly asking for transfers, I think the asking price is little too much.
I agree. How many of us would have been disappointed is we bought Benteke for £25m? I would. After the first howler/barren patch in front of goal we would have been whining like Australian cricketers.

I'm not too disappointed about Benteke as I think he would have been a massive risk at the price. I am worried, however, about our failure to make signings early. All the ITK was about making us making major signings to show our ambition to AVB and Bale. Sure we signed Paulinho early but that was because he had a release clause which meant that Levy had no room to negotiate with Corinthians. In trying to extract the last shekel out of every deal, Levy's dealings are always protracted. I don't know if we ever had a realistic chance to sign Villa, but having protracted negotiations with Barca didn't show him that we really wanted him. If only all players had release clauses.

Yeah. When we were linked with Benteke I wasn't too sure that a target man was what we needed. A 4-3-3 formation moves the ball on the deck rather than hoof it down the pitch, Dawson stylie. We need a mobile forward who can press, drift out wide when needed and make runs into the box. But I can't think of any to go for (I haven't played Champ Man since Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole were the best strikeforce in the game!). Maybe Osvaldo?

I don't think the hard part of a Higuain deal would be the fee... Bale won't give the kid CL football or the salary he'll want.

Who else has made early signings though?

We got Paulinho, Liverpool have got another keeper, Arsenal a young striker, Man Utd have no one - the only real spenders are the two money bag clubs! The season doesnt even start for a month!

Funny how things work out.
24 hours ago, everyone buzzing at Benteke signing.

Now he's not, Utd looking to take Bale and AVB linked with Barca.

The joys of Spurs fans - we gloat about finally going above arsenal and end up with egg on our face in the seasons, we gloat at Arsenal's links to players not happning out of season - now it's not looking too great for us :-D

No - they'll appoint Rubi as caretaker. Or if they go for someone established it will be Laudrup.

AVB isn't bootroom enough for them at this point in time when they want continuity rather than change.

New players generally take half a season to 'settle in', I just hope they aren't thinking along the line of 'well, Ade can't do any worse than last season so a striker isn't a priority'.....

So...have we all calmed down today?

What makes me laugh is reports said no bids were made for Benteke. So everyone is getting irate about something that might not have happened or for all we know we might not have been after.

Why do we need to be limited to the 5 or 6 players we have been linked with. There must be more viable attackers in the world better than what we have?? If not why have scouts

There was a 5 minute period yesterday evening where I found myself genuinely annoyed that we'd not bit for Aruna Kone when we had the chance.

A warning for everyone there....that's what this thread can do for your mental health.

Is anyone seriously disappointed about not signing Benteke?

I'm not bothered one little bit. Haven't seen anything from him to suggest he is an upgrade on what we have.

David Villa on the other hand.....

I get the impression that a lot of folk on here just want us to sign anyone!

Of course it's going to be difficult to sign players in our position. It's difficult to improve on what we have and surely that's the point?

Benteke > Adebayor?! Don't be silly.

Don't think it was ever going to happen tbh

Patience people!! We need the right signings to improve not some one season wonder!
