This Harry Kane "situation" with England has turned into a real pissing contest. Southgate stands firm on using him today despite being not match fit and José fuming over the decision. Kane being England Captain and all does not make it easy for him...

I think the main issue is probably Harry himself. As England captain he will want to play. He also wants to be the all time record goalscorer. Plus he won't want to risk losing his place, as unlikely as that might be.

If he plays 60 minutes against Denmark, I don't see an issue with playing 90 minutes over 3 matches and don't think Southgate has done much wrong.

Kane got hurt in training. Yet Southgate used him when he didnt need to and will start him next game when he shouldnt need to. He just let Chillwell go with an injury. He should let Kane go to. He has a responsibility to the clubs and players. Using injured players on internationals during a club season is irresponsible and poor management.

But I do agree that the issue is Kane. With Kane, it’s very obvious what comes first for him. Clear as day where his footballing priorities lie. And that is fine. But it presents a problem when the best interest of the club differs from his clear priority. Which is why its been shocking we haven’t had a real backup to him in years.

The bit that frustrates me, and the FA seem to have gotten away with this.
Our national team is still billed as in development,

quite frankly, that needs to fuck off.

development is what the u21’s is for and all other age groups.

england first team should be developed, the end.

pick the formation and tactics and pick the best performing players for those positions and tactics.

unfortunately, it’s a bit of a whose who, picked from an early age to play international football, the turgid way.

I’ve seen it from u14 age group, players being picked because of who their parents are, I’ve those that actially have the talent, better talent.

I know some to get through on talent, but those early stages it’s often a whose who, with very limited science because one scouts/coach’s type of player isn’t another’s.
I don't really agree with your first 3 lines, and I'll use the England one day cricket team as an example.

Owen Morgan has used the lead up years to the one day World Cup to "develop" the team to be ready for the tournament and it paid huge dividends with us now World Champions.

Kane wasn't hurt in training, he was still feeling the effects of our punishing schedule from the previous week.

He missed the Wales game, had a 15 minute warm up against Belgium, so should be fine for the next game.

I don't really see an issue here, and I doubt JM is "fuming" either. Southgate has done what was requested of him.

I k ow nothing about cricket, so please excuse my ignorance - seems weird to develop playing in a World Cup, to go on a win further world cups?
Shouldn’t they be going for the World Cup with a developed squad?
That could be my lack of understanding cricket tournaments, and not sure it could be compared to a football calendar of tournaments - younger age groups are for development, full international should be developed ??‍♂️

I think you misunderstand. The One Day World Cup is held once every four years. Morgan "developed" the team from when he took the captaincy into what became the World Champions by testing, trying and sometimes failing in the years leading up to the World Cup. It's an example of a team that started out in no way the finished article (they lost in the group stage in 2015) and became the best in the world.

LMAO!

Sorry Shanks, the bit about the England Cricket team was a post I'd written a few days ago and decided not to send. It seems to have stayed there, even though I deleted it, and has popped up when I'm replying to Hank.

Ball of confusion Wot?

What a joke that the FA schedule a hearing when he's meant to be playing for the England team. Why couldn't this be done remotely?

Because it's a punishment, why should he get to play for England if he's been charged over breaking a rule?

It's not a punishment yet, it's a hearing to decide if he he should be punished. If they want to ban him for a game or two afterwards then fine, but its daft to have the hearing during his call up. Do it before or after.

He puts country first for sure. Always has and continues to under Jose.

One way of looking at it is that he might well be staying at Spurs forever.

Dier out of the squad tonight with hamstring issues.

Cheers Gary

More to do with the fact that he's been playing every 3 days for the last few weeks, it was inevitable he was going to get a strain at some point, if not with us then with England.

You say good but I guarantee they'll organise a match against one of the teams who lost in the playoff semis and are free on that date. Ireland and Norway for example.

You’d hope that given the numerous Covid outbreaks in intentional squads that authorities would be cancelling friendlies rather than arranging new ones. It’s madness that these games are being played in the first place imo and it’s no surprise to me that Covid has spread through some squads like wildfire.
