I doubt this is the case, simply because Milos Veljkovic is an incredible talent for his age, and if we were looking for a talented young CB to mould, why would we look further afield?

Well he is only 18 and is, therefore, unlikely to break into the senior squad for another couple of seasons at least. Caulker is nearly 4 years older and isn't a regular yet. It just seems to me that DL would want to try and get someone a bit nearer the first team than Veljkovic, as promising as he is. Let's face it a lot of really promising youngsters fail to reach their expectations and to assume that he will break through would be a tad irresponsible of the club.

Don't buy that. We'd bite their hand off for £15m. He may be a good up and coming centre back but you can get a CB of real quality for that amount.
Yup, look at what we paid for a player of Vertonghen's quality. Levy would have sold Caulks for that amount of money, no doubt whatsoever.

no he wouldnt. 15m for a future ENGLAND cb? (stupid inflation)

Caulker is only going to get better, and with that his price will only go up.

We would be stupid to sell him imo. Will be a great CB in time.

Mate, I'm not an expert but even Gary Cahill only cost the Chavs £7m. £15m for Caulker in my admittedly very humble opinion would be very expensive.

I was surprised at the price but just passing on what I was told and the person I spoke to is a senior figure at the club!

He seems an OK sort of lad but I haven't seen anything yet to suggest he is a top quality central defender in the making. he doesn't seem to excel at any part of the game a central defender needs.

Hmm. I agree £10m for such player is not for me. However, if they are willing to let him go on a freebie or up to £5m it would be worth considering. He may still not have fully recovered from his injury, let's face it Ade is only just got over the lack of pre-season training - apparently! :cautious:

Yh, he's worth a punt for £5m but I'm sure the reports are that Barca are asking for around €14 which is approx £12.5m.

Would much rather have Maloney, cheap as chips and has had a decent season.

Edit - for those of you who think what am I on about re Maloney.

Villa, 31, £12m plus and on massive wages. Had a poor season and not the same player following a serious leg break.

Maloney, 30, Wigan relegated = will cost peanuts. Plus he's a terrier and has had a good season.

Yes he's not of Villa's quality but I would much rather spend a couple of million on a low risk impact sub who will give 110% than 12m on damaged goods. The £10m savings can be better spent on other areas or towards another striker.

Plus we're NOT Chelsea and can't afford to write off large sums of money.

He only had 6 months left on his contract iirc
That's true but if we're talking about being offered £15m for Caulker last summer then I find it hard to believe. Last summer he signed a contract extension with us until 2014 so, presumably, and I'm more than happy to be put right on the subject, he also wouldn't have had a lot of time left on his contract; although it's possible the Liverpool bid came in after that.

£15m? I would take it and run. He's nowhere near as good as Jones or Smalling.

Yes he can head the ball but he's next to useless against tricky or pacey players.

There's much better cb's out there that would cost less than £15m.

Unfortunately, i would have to agree with this.

Ive never really got the Caulker thing. A good solid backup to have around but I cant see him ever becoming our first choice CB.

I always hoped that Caulker is the next big thing, but he couldn't prove that this season. His heading skills are very good but so much to improve. I don't know if he can get enough game time to get that better soon.

It would be sad if he leaves, but 15m Pounds are a hell lot. Imagine we could buy someone like Kevin Strootman instead or as a CB someone like Alderweireld for maybe half that money.

I am really uncertain about this, good prospect, but 15m Pounds now??? Don't know

The same goes with Rose with Sunderland reportedly offering £8m ... I wouldn't hesitate to accept that amount of money.

Caulker's a big unit but he's been easily bi-passed when someone has ran at him. He's of a similar stature of Rio Ferdinand but he could cope with all types of players when in his prime, Caulker can't and it's not something I think he'll learn anytime soon.

I've been won around RE: Villa. At first I was sceptical but if we pulled this off it would be a massive coup.

As pointed out, he could score for fun here and I don't see why he wouldn't take it. At the business end of his career, played in Spain all his life and will let him experience the best league in the world whilst leading the line for a top English club.

I do suspect he would want top 4 though... I guess our transfer targets will change accordingly after Sunday.

This is probably not the thread for it but I disagree with this. The guy is only 21 FFS!

Defenders typically take longer to learn their position than many others on the pitch. Although I think up to this point Caulker has had a very good career and shone wherever he has played on loan. He has all the attributes to make it with us - pace, heading ability, poise and intelligence on the ball and strength in the challenge. Think about how poor Kaboul was at a similar age and now he is one of our best defenders.

For a 21 year old trying to make it at an aspiring top four side I think Caulker has had a decent season and he will definitely improve massively over the next few years.

Fair enough, I don't see it, apart from being as strong as an ox, I think he lacks the exact things that I have bolded in your post.

But as you rightly said mate, not really the thread for this discussion.

I'd be surprised if we sold Caulker he's played overall 28 times this season
in some pretty big games too, and imo will only play more next season.
