Pointless

But having a striker that has had a full pre season and knows what the manager wants is definitely not pointless. It could take a month or longer to get a striker up to speed even after we sign one We should have signed one striker by now....

Kind of my point, the post I replied to said no ambition, but it's that fine line. Say we went and signed Grant Holt, who we of course could, we'd have signed a striker but that would signify lack of ambition right ?

Is it any striker or the right striker ? Is the right striker gettable ? I'm totally on board with the fact our squad needs forwards, but it's not through lack of ambition, it's through being unable to pay the wages and/or transfer fee required for the right forward. I don't know what the answer is........

Yep, doom and gloom.

The wife bought some nice new knives for her birthday, they are tempting... Need... Striker.... Sooooooooooon!

Well after a lovely shopping spree in Cribbs Causeway I'm feeling pretty good and actually didn't give much thought to the plight of our club which leads to the invariable come down.

Still, back to what matters tomorrow and if we do manage to nab all three points (which seems pretty unlikely) it will boost the morale on this site no end!

I hear what you're saying but really it's us fans that have been hoping for a 'better' striker for the last 3 years. Last season we had Ade, Defoe and Pav, for one place up front. That was a good strike force. It seems Harry decided to let Pav go in January and swap for Saha - not a great solution but not a bad temporary solution. Season before Pav, Crouch, Defoe and Keane were here, again, not great but not awful and we improved on it with Ade.

Now this season we are waiting for a striker, AVB knows we need one, DL knows we need one. Maybe we've just been waiting for a bit more cash because we know we can get someone really top draw? Who knows. I have faith. It'd be nice to have it done already but hey, those are the breaks.

Had to give that an 'optimistic' rating because, well, that is a VERY optimistic assessment of our current situation.

I generally don't disagree with you about the quality of our strikers over the last season. They've not been brilliant, but also far from terrible (though obviously the season before last was a problem in terms of goals). However we cannot afford to wait on just one striker. Both Pav and Crouch could play up front on their own (though Pav was still far from ideal). When Crouch went we had Adebayor who could obviously lead the line (with Pav to step in if necessary). When we sold Pav we replaced him with Saha, who again could lead the line if needed.

Now we're left with Defoe - the one striker of the last few seasons that is completely ill-suited for that role. We need a striker like Adebayor, AND another striker that can step in when he's injured or playing in the African Cup of Nations in a few months.

That's not just a case of it being "hey, those are the breaks", it's some pretty poor forward planning from the highest levels at the club that have left us in a difficult bargaining position, and going into the first game in a compromised position of our own making.

9 times this week I have wanted to say something but backed out of saying it because I was frightened of getting negative rep, I would much rather be in situation of not worrying before pressing post reply but because of those that lurk in the background and pass judgement I have to keep quiet
For fucks sake mate, grow a pair. It won't affect your life to have red minus numbers next to your name. It won't make you any less likely to get laid/get a good job/win the lottery. If you've got an opinion and want to express it then do so. If you don't then be a pussy and keep it to yourself.

But stop fucking whining about it.

Totally agree mate, I read nearly every post but don't really feel the need to post much because someone's nearly always already posted what I would write in a much more eloquent or funnier way than I ever would, but to not post because you're scared that someone might neg rep you.....well that just stinks of no self confidence, which in turn makes me wonder what you're doing on a public forum.

If we somehow manage to win tomorrow will that affect our possible transfer targets?

Defoe scores a hat-trick in the 1st half and replaced by Kane who score a hat-trick in the 2nd half. Nomore need to buy a striker. Easy.

Is it possible to have a nice time at Cribbs Causeway?
For my two pennyworth I reckon we might a bit of a cocking tomorrow, a la the first game of Ramos' first full season in charge up at Middlesbrough. Change of formation, attacking approach, players not yet settled in to their roles and some key players absent. Feels similar.

Except we are already miles better than when Wendy took charge.

We will not lose tomorrow, striker or no striker (except it is definitely the latter tomorrow).

Back on topic, I still trust Levy to do the business for us before the window closes. It's a rare occasion he let's us down.

Striking the right balance of our targets, all well and good chasing superstars but we should still look for up and coming players

Sorry, but I totally disagree with this. I've lost count of the number of transfer windows in the past few years we've come out of in a worse state than when we went in. If there's one thing I trust Levy to do it's prioritise his obsession for getting the best deal over ensuring we get the players we desperately need.

So whats the suicide count as of this afternoon then ;)
This one will go to the last day and we will sign Ade and maybe a Modric replacement but ive resigned myself to no Moutinho No Llorente no Damiao Ive got a sneaking suspicion we will get what is all to familiar these days "we tried but they kept moving the goal posts" shit!! when the plan was to keep Defoe and Kane as back up and save a few million by dragging out the Ade deal until it was last minute as for the replacement for Mods im clueless TBH...and simply past caring i just want the lads to at least take a point from a v.tough 1st game.

AVB only looking for one striker to add to Defoe + Kane??

“I can give you an example - last year we had two strikers in Chelsea of great dimension.
“Tottenham had three strikers of great dimension - Adebayor, Defoe and Roman Pavlyuchenko.
“Normally there is one that doesn’t get enough time that he feels he should be credited with.
“That’s not because you don’t rotate enough, but because when you play a system with one striker it is very difficult to get the third one to play enough.
“Normally on my teams I like to promote the third one as a young striker who is competing for that place a bit more aggressively.”

Well neither Defoe or Kane are suited in a system as the lone striker.

I agree with some of that but surely there are strikers out there that we could have got earlier

We should have got a good striker with potential in July eg De Jong and then spend the rest of the summer looking for the mega striker This may have also improved our negotiating position too whereas now we have no position of strength
