Why is no one mentioning that zenit have said they want 100 million euros for witsel? Seems pretty clear that we won't get him if that's the casr

Probably because most people realise that the 100 million Euros mentioned by Zenit is just bollocks and bluster.

There is a train of thought that it's jut posturing, and they are keen to sell, because of the collapse of the rouble against the euro, his wages have almost doubled overnight, and they need to cut the amount of foreign players they have.

Witsel would be a great buy. I had a feeling that Levy would be looking to exploit the new foreign player quotas introduced in Russia recently.

I thought the quota is players on the pitch rather than players in the squad?

Witzel could be the reason why our options over DM surprisingly lengthened in the last week or so. Was never available / or thought to be available before, but now is.

Exactly, two years left, he's said he won't sign a new deal, Zenit have to be realistic.

And how many players are actually worth 100 million euros, even in today's over inflated market their are probably only a handfull of players worth that, and Witsel certainly isn't one of them

Yeah, cash in now, make room in the new quota system by getting rid of a player that is going to be gone in a year anyway, and save a lot of cash as the ruble falls apart.

Also consider how far 30m Euros goes in Russia right now.

If they were holding out for €100m, they wouldn't be entertaining a loan offer from Milan.

even so if you have 9 first team overseas players and can only play 6 (and even those rules may tighten - its driven by the rouble fall against dollar/euro) then the owner might be happy to consider a sale as the wages (in euros) are much bigger than planned.

Witsel is mixed race and Zenit supporters have been accused in the past of being pretty xenophobic so he may prefer out

all supposition of course

ali z on 'but but jj and others have said we are not in for austin': We haven't been but have today asked to be kept in touch.

Surely it's sensible to keep our options open! Austin would be better than no one to cover for Kane. Hell, I'd say he'd be fair competition for that spot upfront.

I think it is but its still restrictive for them. Especially if there are other non Russian players that they are trying to sign.

I can't agree with this. All managers are the same. They've worked with players, know exactly what they'd bring to the team and how they'd adapt. It's why Harry always took Defoe with him and Crouch. He knew how they'd play, how they'd fit in. It makes 100% sense to take players that a manager knows and wants. It kills the risk factor considerably. Limited knowledge and horizons? How about, understands weakness and holes in sides and knows exactly what plug is needed to fill them.

i know what youre getting at and dont disagree that many are indeed like this and not without good reason. but i feel in our current, specific situation the combination of a wily chairman, putting it politely, pochs undying love for his old soton charges and the fact that the teams are quite evenly matched means we have to look beyond. the fact that weve signed none of them proves the point.

So according to latest itk it's a simple as putting the bid in which will be accepted then just the formality of getting the signature on the forms.............this is Spurs no chance it'll go like that ha ha ha!!

I'm just making sure I understand the quota. Seems like they need 5 russians on the pitch. And with eight players that are foreign born, that does cause them some headaches. But I'm just making sure I understand the rule. Not questioning why they would sell.

Think @Grey Fox ITK said exactly the opposite about the process - players scouted for a long time etc

Would be fuckin ecstatic if we signed Witsel and Berahino. Not getting hopes up, we've been let down too many times before.
Come on you Spurs, let this time be different...

Austin is doable for us but is way down the list and in my humble opinion would be a panic buy and just for the reasons mentioned around Harry burn out

when can we panic then, mr fox? after the window closes? goodbye horse.
