I actually think the keeping Rose is good. Think the days last season of him being a banker starter when fit are over, and to get in he's going to have to up his game. Thankfully we have a former international level defender as head coach, who may be able to mould that potential shown at Sunderland into a competent PL defender. Home grown, so all good. For the a ame reasons I'd keep Naughton over signing Lopes. 4 of our HG quota all wrapped up in only 2 positions, leaving the foreign contingent free to fill the gaps elsewhere.
Onto the signing. I like the sound of Dier, but wonder how this goys on with Ali Z's insistence that Lascalles was pretty much done and dusted? If we sign him too, that must suggest the end for more than just Dawson. I'd hoped for a natural LCB so we get the right balance, quick google search suggests Dier is CB/DM also capable at RB, but actually comfortable with both feet, so may well fit in as LCB. Good price too.
Kaboul/Chiriches
Vertonghen/Dier
I think a good preseason and Kaboul will hopefully find his form and fitness. A proper LB and DM for support, and Jan may also rediscover his mojo.
Dawson to go?
Schneiderlin and Rodriguez hopefully in. Few more outs to balance the numbers, Sandro, maybe Paulinho gets sacrificed?
I'm more confident than I have been for some time.

I'd keep Fredricks over Lopes, it's a signing just for the sake of it and a waste of the clubs money be it a fee, wages or lining agents' pockets. Our youth teams have done well over the last few years, it's time to take advantage of that rather than fritter money away on average journeymen, no wonder we can't compete financially if we just spunk money on mediocrity time and time again, I bet agents love DL

Well we've shifted out Gomes, Livermore, Siggy & Falque so far, with Carroll looking likely to go on loan and Naughton seemingly having Saints as an option. Benny has been frozen out of the squad so he'll be gone come season start one way or another.

I would imagine that Dier in means we can offload Dawson now, which really only then leaves one of our midfielders to go if we buy MS.

Total squad would then be 25 players by my reckoning - which is pretty much spot on where it should be.

Dawson and BAE out then one of Paulinho/Dembele and one of Mason/Carroll just to get it to the right size IMO then one in/one out after that imo. This isn't the thread for this though

The Koeman quotes about schneiderlin after their preseason game sounded less then convincing, pretty guarded and make me think that he will be our player
If you were Koeman and you know MS wants to go then you would want him out quickly so you can get any replacements and settle the squad. Look how we suffered last year from the Bale saga and in the previous years for the Modric will he/won't he go situations. I would think any manager wants to get the season started with a few weeks of quiet, solid work with his team

They have £90m+ in their pockets from previous sales, so there is no need for them to have to wait for MS to go before getting in replacements. So I don't think Koeman would be that bothered if it drags on...unless he starts causing a stink in the dressing room!

I agree with you, but all the while you cling on to the belief a player might stay especially an important player, you give the examples of bale and modric, it's the same, schneiderlin is their best player now and they wanna hang on to him, but Koeman looked and spoke like a manager resigned to losing him

I would argue Schneiderlin as their best player even before all their sales, a lot of their fans would agree with that. I am incredibly excited about us signing him. Im with you totally on Koeman looking like he has already lost him.

One of Falque or Ceballos had to go i suspect. Similar positions on the field, neither homegrown and over 21. I guess we weighed things up and think that at 24 then best to cash in on Falque now with just one year of his contract to go.

Ceballos will probably be loaned out again this season - but i hope it's to a Championship side so he get's used to the English game a bit more.

As my mate - who is an intelligent, level headed and long time season ticket holder at the saints, said- 'The attacking creativity we have lost is replaceable, the midfield dominance of Schneiderlin is irreplaceable.'

While he may or may not be their 'best' player, he is certainly seen as the most important and crucial to their system.

Hmmm...new contract for Jan and a Franco Friday swoop on the way for Moustachio?

Agreed, it may be unpopular to say but if the ITK is right and we lose Sandro and gain Schneiderlin I would be happy. We need a consistant midfield pairing and going on recent seasons Sandro and Dembele can't give us this.

My V strong opinion which is based on knowledge is that Jan the man will sign a new deal. #goodnewsfriday #fingerscrossed

Good news. If we can have the Jan of 2012/13 as opposed to last season it will be a real boost.

I do hope though that we are looking at another quality CB to partner him and compete with Kaboul (who may never be the same player), rather than pin all our hopes on Chriches and Dier

I have a feeling now that this transfer is going to get Jim White very excited on deadline day.

JJ is never usually presumptively positive. So many times we see him be negative about a deal we've read so much about in the papers, so i'm taking this as a massive pick-me-up
