Bloody hell, I’ve just seen we are on TV on Saturday in the early kick off. There’s no escaping us is there ???

I genuinely was gutted when they announced that during commentary on Tuesday. It’s so much easier just following it on live score as I can at least focus on other things. The problem with the early kick off is that it’s sets you up for a shit weekend. From memory we’ve lost against Leicester, Bournemouth, West Ham and Burnley in the last 5 times we’ve been the early kick off. Of course it can go the other way like when we beat Huddersfield but I’m really not confident anymore.

How do we think Ndombele as part of the 3 in a 4-2-3-1 would go?

Dier and Winks behind him, Sissoko at right back, Moura and Son with Kane up top.

Obviously just a stop gap and a big ask for him but might be worth a look? Anytime he stepped forward Tuesday in the first half he looked the best player on the pitch!

And now for something completely different... What if we went back to 4-2-3-1, but with a slight variance.

Firstly, time to integrate Foyth, Davies and Sanchez into the back 4. I think we'll be a bit more solid defensively, with those guys, plus 2 more defensive midfielders in front of them.

For now, NDombele is not physically fit enough to play in a CM 2. So, why don't we lean in to his attacking strengths. Put him in the three.

EG:

Lloris

Foyth
Toby
Sanchez
Davies

Dier
Sissoko

Lamela
NDombele
Eriksen

Kane

Admittedly, this isn't the most explosive team, but I believe it might help us do a better job of transitioning back into a defensive posture. Likewise, having the three consisting of players who are highly capable on the ball, could potentially lead to us having a bit more control over midfield.

To me, that's been our biggest problem for months now. Our midfield looks a bit bedraggled and disorganized sometimes. Especially when it comes to transitioning back into defense. That's where we've been picked apart recently. When you look at how teams attack us, they pass between the lines, as the lines are usually all over the place. Very little discipline. Constant mental errors, and players failing to track opposition runs. This is a particularly an issue I see with a variety of players. Not to pick on him, but watching Dele on Tues, I counted at least three times in the first half, he switched off and didn't track a Bayern player making an overlapping run past our fullback. Thereby leaving them completely free to put in a cross or run unimpeded into the 18 yard box. He's not the only one guilty of this.

I think having two defensive minded players in the CM2 isn't very sexy. But right now, we need stability in the middle and stop being so brittle/fragile when other teams go on the attack. When we were at our best between 2016-2018, we normally had a combo of Dier/Dembele, Wanyama/Dembele. We looked much more solid when they were at their prime. Sadly, playing Winks, NDombele, Sissoko and Eriksen, is just too flimsy. Winks isn't strong enough or good enough to be playing as a defensive midfielder. He's far too easily overrun.

No Son? You're kidding right

I’d definitely play Davies - getting a little fed up of Rose’s inconsistency and he clearly wants out. Davies has always remained professional, just not the most exciting full-back in the league. Solid at the back for the most part and looks good going forward when confident - just hasn’t had the game time of late.

He was excellent for us a couple seasons back when Rose was knackered, though. Get a run of games under his belt and maybe he’ll do until the summer :)

No. If I was kidding, I'd start with: 'Why did the chicken cross the road?'

Seriously though, I take your point. Hence, why I said, 'something completely different'. I just feel that the team needs a huge shake-up. Rattle the cages. Give them something else to consider and focus on.

Is it right? I highly doubt it. But the point being that we need to find a way to play to the strengths of the players we have. And for now, when I look at NDombele, I see a player who is actually quite brilliant in the opposition half. But because of the limitations of his fitness, he's vulnerable in transition, and seems to run out of steam after a half of football. So, why not focus on his strength? Put him at the center of an attacking midfielder 3 behind Kane. Or, something along those lines!

I think we need to mix it up a bit and move away from the diamond. I quite like these two options...

4231

lloris
foyth sanchez jan davies
ndombele dier
lamela alli son
kane

Or 32221 / 343

lloris
toby dier jan
Sissoko rose
ndombele winks
lamela son
kane

With Dier back in the team we can go retro and flip between the two systems, issue is different fullbacks needed for each ideally.

I’d go back to 343 with Dier moving between defence and defensive midfield positions. I’d play Sissoko on the right of the 4.

Yep, not a bad shout.

Chelsea won a title playing this style with Victor fucking Moses at RWB. Sissoko's attributes are actually ideal for the role imo.

If Lamela and/or Moura don't start, then I'm officially losing faith in Pochetino.

Personnel are not that relevant this weekend. Nor is the result. The two key indicators that will show if Poch can turn this around will be:

1. Formation
2. Effort

If I was Levy I'd be watching purely with those two things in mind. If we see a diamond and another half arse showing then Poch needs to be cut loose a.s.a.p. If we see a return to 4-2-3-1 and the players buying into it then the job can be his for a lot longer.

The 4-3-3 to 3-4-3 needs to return, where Dier drops in when the full backs go forward

Lloris

Sissoko
Toby
Jan
Davies

Ndombele
Dier
Eriksen

Lamela
Kane
Son

We should be able to beat these regardless of form. They're not very good.
