You're not wrong - it is clunky, but it's borne out of necessity. Two ball-playing CMs removes a the defensive screen in front of the back three, so you need good wingbacks who can get back in place when the ball turns over, so we've got protection for every channel, which we don't have. And so we need a DM4 pinned to the base of the midfield to provide support if the fullbacks are caught high up the pitch and the defence needs to spread out. If we had really shit-hot WBs then we could dispense with a DM4 and have an MF6 + MF8 pairing.That would be a very clunky team. I would rather have 2 Ball players in cm if we are playing a back 3
