I do actually think we need to start Dier in this one to combat Haaland’s ariel presence.

None of the combinations are ideal but Emerson & Dier probably edges it for me as Dier & Davies just lacks too much pace.

It's a fair enough logic but , against City, I fear it won't make that much difference and it always sounds personal when people talk about PEH or Dier /Davies as if they are going to be what costs us.

Its really not personal.

But its the selection id make for the greater good of the team.

Its actually mad just how huge a difference signing that extra top CB could've been making for us.

Ange has got our B team midfield and a mix of attackers playing incredibly well but we didn't finish our chances against Villa and then we got done by a set-piece and through ball which you'd think with a top notch CB there neither would have been likely to have happened.

Even against City, add in a top class back-up CB instead of any 2 of Emerson, Dier and Davies and we'd have a small chance but without one we are looking vulnerable against Haaland etc.

Really hope we address this super early in January and then also very much looking forward to next season when we've had this Jan and next summer to have added a good 5-6 more for Ange so our squad will be able to far better handle these types of setbacks so we can go week to week going toe to toe with anyone.

As for the City game, head says we lose 4-1,4-2, heart says we are their bogey team and will create some chances for sure so if we take them you just never know.

COYS.

I think Ange more or less confirmed Dier wouldn't start in his presser didn't he?

So choices are pretty much Dier or Royal and Höjberg or Gil (if Höjberg Kulu on flank, if Gil Kulu on Maddison role). Other than that there is Skipp.

Porro, Royal, Davies, Udogie
GLC, Biss, Hojbjerg
Kulu, Son, Johnson

this is who I think will play.
but I would go with Gil over Hojbjerg

Interesting idea but we really need the middle three to be as fluid as possible in order to take pressure away from our defence. Putting PEH in there is a recipe for disaster due to his limited agility. Coming on as a sub against tired players is one thing but starting against City’s midfield could be incredibly detrimental. We need to keep the ball moving as smoothly and swiftly as we can in those areas and PEH doesn’t really help facilitate that.

If richy is fit I’d consider putting him up top with son on the left / Johnson on right. Some real pace then - give their full backs something to think about .
Kulu, biss , gio as the midfield 3 then ….
No idea at centre back .
Then
Porro , Destiny and Vic .

I think we're certain to lose starting PEH.

Kulu was amazing central, Gill did well.

Biss for Bentancur and thats it.

I like this. We’re technically better with Gil and Kulu rather than PEH. Ball retention and passing in tight spaces might be key today - and that’s not exactly PEH’s strength!

Is richy back? I saw the training pics but not sure he was ready to get on the pitch (or even the bench). Would be a huge boost if so

Get the arguments for Dier but if we can stop the supply to Haaland than that isn’t so much an issue, press the shit out of them higher up and hope Davies and Emmerson are positionally aware enough.

I too would put Dier in largely for the necessity of a traditional CB when defending high balls. I think the situation is a bit different when you're at home, expecting to dominate the ball with the biggest threats being quick and not necessarily big or strong.

I still expect Dier to get spun for fun of course but I dunno, Davies and Emerson at CB scares me more for this fixture, personally.

Given where we are at the moment, i honestly do not follow Ange logic with not playing Dier.
I know he is a player that some of our fans love to hate, and i know he may have some issues with pace, but he is a world cup semifinalist in his position,
love or hate Poch, Mourinho and Conte, they all rated him extremely highly at club level and Hodgson, Allardyce , and `Southgate ,at England level,
Given the threadbare nature of the squad, i am wondering if this has something to do with ability but much more a personal problem with the 2 of them?
We have beaten city 6 in the last 8 meetings and dier would have played in all of them unless injured, we have also just lost 3 on the spin , (despite external factors being the cause).
it feels like Ange will only play him over his dead body....weird?
Apparently Ally Gold asked "if Dier was starting to combat the height at city" and was told NO.....
Not even leaving anyone guessing.....
