Fitness issues aside Sessegnon also needs to transition from being a boy to a man as he always looks like a startled rabbit in headlights. He needs to develop a touch of arrogance to his game and look to follow in the footsteps of Mount and Foden.

He’s a big goal threat and we’ve already seen that the wingbacks are going to get a lot of chances in this set up and it’s only early days, things will get even tastier when we’re a well oiled machine. Hopefully this will be his time to shine once he’s back in the frame

Was just talking about him in the Conte thread.

I wasn’t convinced when we signed him, because to me it only made sense if we were playing 3 at the back.

I’d completely forgotten about him and have no idea how he’s done on loan, but I think he has the perfect profile for LWB in Conte’s system and really hope he can return, get fit and actually begin his Spurs career.

I rate Reggie quite highly but Sessegnon would be another fantastic option there.

Sorry but come on. Just look at the facts
299 apps was a club record, but over a 12 year period.
On average that’s 25 per season (when we averaged 45 games per season)
In his last 9 years at spurs he only played more than 26 times in a single season twice.
This isn’t to denigrate Anderton’s quality- he was amazing and incredibly loyal too (shamefully didn’t get a testimonial either).
The sicknote tag is a sad way to be remembered but you can’t say he was an ever present because it’s just not true.
For comparison, luka modric played 127 times in a 4 year period. If he’d have stayed as long as anderton he might have broken 500 apps.

That is some wild maths

Along way to go of course for him to get where he needs to be but I feel like he would be perfect for conte’s system, up and down and can score goals as he’s shown at Fulham, hopefully his fitness issues can be put behind him and he becomes the player we hoped, there’s no better manager to learn the ropes from his perspective

His injuries sound awful. I can’t imagine he’s in a happy place with his things have gone since he joined us.

Despite obviously things going terribly so far for Sessegnon at Spurs, I have a big soft spot for him. I thought he always looked more intelligence than athletic prowess when watching him for Fulham. He just seemed to have a knack for finding the right pass, right run. That plus the fact he seemed so genuinely excited to be at Spurs. I remember day he joined and his interview and his face being lit up on the signing picture. There was a video too of him talking about Bale's spurs kit, I just really hope he has a chance to come good for us.

Nah.

Waste of money & bought because of hype.

I know this is true because SC told me.

This is exactly it. Sess isnt particularly skillful and he is a good physical presence but he isnt ultra athletic or quick like bale was. What stood him out at fulham was the ability to find the right pass or be in the right place. Actually quite a subtle player with very solid technique as well. He had very little, however, in the way of trickery and definitely has never been a flair player.

The problem with Sess, and I thought we over payed from the start and always saw it as a bit of a gamble. Doing well in the championship pretty consistently has been shown to be an unreliable indicator in how well players do in the PL, yet people always fall for the hype.

The thing is that at the absolute top level he is missing that explosive ness, or that bit of skill that separates you from the rest. Now boring and effective can work but not often in an attacking wide role in a top team, particularly in modern day football where attacking play is often about making the most in really congested spaces.

Now, it was logical that he would be transformed back into a full back, it was also clear to me that this would take at least a few seasons. Let's put it this way, to make it at the top, it will be as a fullback but when we signed him he was undeniably a better winger than fullback. Personally I also think he has potential playing in a central AM role, but I feel that would be a much bigger ask.

For me the jury is out, however, he is the definition of a Conte player. Intellegent, athletic and full of running.

I feel a bit of sympathy for Sess, as he needs to be treated as any other young player. Hes 21 and for me it was clear that he wouldn't be pushing for a starting role until, well, about now, at the earliest. But because bug money was spent people get very impatient.

Gil as well, btw is a player who we will only really get to appreciate in 2-3 seasons, if things go well.

People never treat home grown 21 year olds in the same light, but people really should do. Tanganga is older than both Gil and Sessegnon but you wouldn't always get that impression. These are still kids who often have unfair expectations placed upon them for being very good very young.

For what its worth he is also unlucky to be compared to the likes of Foden and Sancho. These are players with very different qualities. Sessegnon will never be as explosive as those two. It's just not his game and without that unpredictability it can often take more time.

I think he played LWB when he was out on loan in Germany and scores a couple of goals, so he should not be too unfamiliar with this role.

Might be better for him then as LB as his defending is pretty suspect

Have seen alot of crazy hype but have not seen any qualities that would suggest he could play in the EPL.

Please prove me wrong and not fade into obscurity like the Edwards, Bostoks, Blondels

I posted this a while back in a different thread...

So Anderton wasn't quite as injury prone as people have made him out to be (although he certainly had some issues in this area).

He played 12 seasons for us and averaged 30 games a season (average of 25 league games a season).

As a comparison, Roy Keane played 12 full seasons at Man Utd and averaged 40 games a season, but only 29 league games a season.

And this was at a time when Spurs were pretty crap and had almost no European football. So Anderton's numbers would have been 4 or 5 games higher, on average per season if we were in Europe.

That said, I'm guessing Keane was also probably suspended for a few games a season too, so that needs to be factored in.

All in all, Anderton had injury problems but as with most myths, there's a foundation of truth that gets blown out of proportion.

Anyway....

The only question regarding Sess is simply is he good enough at LWB to rotate with Reggie and save us having to play Davies/Doherty there, or buy a new LWB in the next two windows.

For me, the answer is yes. From what I've seen of him he's a bit of a jack of all trades like Reguillon but not really a stand out defender or stand out getting forward.

We have a lot to do to fix this team and I believe he will allow us to focus on other positions which I believe are far weaker (at least for another season).

At the moment Reggie is our only option at LWB and the workload On him is significant. He mightn’t have had his best match against Everton but he covered a lot of ground at pace. We need Sess fit to both put a bit of competition into the position, give Reggi a break and avoid ever seeing Davies or Doherty as LWBs.
