Sessegnon was tearing it up in the Championship, but we don't know how much hard work he was putting in.

Perhaps his natural ability was allowing him to cruise through training sessions and games.

Most players can't do this when they step up to the PL though.

So if this is the case, then hopefully Conte can refocus the guy and help him become one of the best LWBs in the league.

I am looking forward to seeing how he does when he’s fit.

Him and Reggie fighting it out for the left wing back slot (and allowing rotation) should be good!

blimey this thread is living proof that you become a better player when you don't play as people forget all your weaknesses and blame the other poor bar steward

I don't think it is that, as much as it is the notion that wing-back suits his skills better than FB.

He has to prove it, to be sure, but I think the skill set is there.

And, I don't think he walks into the XI over Reguilon, but he'll have a chance to earn it.

I don't think anyone has forgotten anything, rbs.

I think people are just saying that this is a 21 year old lad who's had horrible luck with injuries.

Has not been able to build any sort of momentum within our club.

Had a more than decent loan spell in Germany.

And is finally going to get the opportunity to work under, and learn from a truly elite coach.

Not really anything wrong with that type of discussion, surely?

nothing wrong with it at all I kind of agree a bit and I thought when we signed him that he was a really decent prospect and of course he has been injured but he has looked lost the few times he has played he was really poor in the game he played earlier this season which he has probably got a decent excuse for to be fair

I guess the point is that its sometimes easier to look at the shiny new things rather than polishing the old one you have - Reguillon done alright overall he has some weaknesses and he is going to have to learn a new system as a wing back which is about the same for Sessegnon as well, he has had a couple of years of struggles and the role in which he might end up playing is really demanding physically. I hope he does come back as a better version but its going to be tough for him

Gutted that he got injured. The ECL was a great chance for him to get some game time and build some confidence.

He’s too young to be given up on but sadly sometimes the timing of injuries can really mess up someone’s career.

Absolutely fair & reasonable response mate. And to be honest I do agree that he's looked somewhat lost on the rare occasions we've got to see him.

I'm just clinging to hope that, as was the case while he was in Germany, with an actual structure to the team he's in, along with a manager/coach who is interested in making the team better than the sum of its parts. Hopefully this boy can start to look like the prospect that we both thought we'd signed.

Thanks again for the reasonable response ?

Just a reminder as to why so many people still have such high hopes for Ryan and why Spurs signed him.
Fingers crossed he can get fit, get believe back in himself, his body & show the quality & ability that he showed that night for Fulham away to Sheffield Utd.

I live in Sheffield and I often get told Sess was amazing that day.

Great. Was he?
imo he was ok, maybe stretching to decent.

i'm still massively non-plussed with his all round game but for a lb/lwb he has a trait that not many others playing that role have and that's to get himself into goal-scoring positions, more importantly he's also pretty composed/reliable once he gets there. he's like the total opposite of lucas. he's not going to carry the ball through the opposition and from a standing start he's pretty useless but get him in the box and he'll make the right decision more often than not. defensively i think he's intelligent enough to learn but like is so often pointed out with him, he just comes across as incredibly timid. hopefully conte can instil a bit of danny rose into him.

He certainly knows how to score. Before we even start talking about talent he has to get, and stay fit. That's the bottom line.

I remember hearing at the time when he signed that that hamstring injury vwas bad so was surprised we didn't wait to see how he got on. Was announced after the Dyballa fiasco so the conspiracy theorist in me reckons that may have been part of the thinking.

Having seen some of the positions Hakimi go into at Inter and Emerson and Reguilon got into on Sunday then I think this system is probably his best chance at making it here.

He's not aggressive enough going forward or defensively but he does have two things that a lot of LBs, including Reguilon, lack - mature decision making and an ability to get into scoring positions and remain calm. In Conte's system he'd probably be more reliable than Reguilon in terms of making the right decisions on the ball and the structure should really suit him. He's also definitely a better goalscorer.

Think his problem is mostly mental - as others have pointed out above he's just too timid. A bit of screaming from Conte and a bit of motivation and belief from a manager of his standing and maybe Sessegnon will get a bit more aggressive and we'll see his potential.

Wasn't a criticism just seems rather generous. I don't watch German football, but usually when a player is doing great you hear about it.
Sorry, read it wrong. He won one player of the month with them in November, then improved and got better in December just to get injured later. He had really good 2 months when he became a starter. After the injury his production wasn't the same but looked good again near the end of the season from what I remember.

His crossing and pass selection is very underrated. Obviously, he hasn't played for us consistently enough to show it off but does have the ability to get a decent amount of assists as a LWB.
