Then I am sorry for misunderstanding, please explain what difference does that makes? Does it means he’s focus wasn’t here to get game fit for the euros?
So the interviewer opens the question by saying you've already spoken about how happy you are about being back at spurs but if we can look to the summer
- This part is important because the interviewer is removing the need for Bale to clarify his undying love for Spurs and wants his answer to focus solely on how it pertains to Wales and the Euros.
She then asks if not knowing what's happening next season will be a distraction.
He then says "it's not a distraction and the reason he came to spurs was obviously (he's using obviously here in the context of "It should go without saying") he came to spurs was to play football first and foremost" - First and Foremost means most importantly, so that was the primary reason he came to spurs, to play football.
The reason he said this is within the bigger context of the fact he wasn't getting any games at Real Madrid so if you understand that context of he wasn't getting games at his parent club and came to Spurs to play football.
He then says "But" and the way he is using but is to mean; to answer your question yes going into the euros I wanted to be match fit.
Now this is the discrepancy that's being misrepresented. People are taking what he said as:
I wanted to come to spurs to play football So I can be match fit for the euros - which makes it sound like he only has one goal.
That's because as I said they're ignoring the part of "first and foremost" and "but" because what that does is makes it two goals - to play football again consistently and by doing so, I'll also be fit for the euros.
He's basically saying, he came to Spurs because he wanted to play football instead of sitting on the bench (which hasn't proved succesful) and yes part of his thinking was that by playing football he'll be fit for the euros but he absolutely did clarify that his main priority was simply to play football by using the words "first and foremost"
I have to remember that not every Spurs fan first language is English and that may be the case here; In which case I apologise if I came across rude and I've tried to answer this earnestly.
