Numbers work, you know.

Average age squad of teams that won leagues
Chelsea 27.14
Inter 26.78
Bayern 26.63
Barca 25.08
l'OM 27.05

Now to get down to 25, and add Beckham and Neville our average age (getting rid of Bentley, GDS, Niko and Charlie as a best guess), our age will skyrocket from 26.85 to 27.84

That makes us older than Hull were last year but still younger than Portsmouth. I forget who put them together.

In fact there is some evidence of a opposite correlation to average age of squad and finish. 5 of the top 6 were in the youngest 9 squads. The only one in the top half is sinking quickly this year.

ENGLAND
29.09 - Fulham
28.98 - Portsmouth
27.87 - Birmingham City
27.40 - Blackburn Rovers
27.33 - Aston Villa
27.27 - Hull City
27.20 - Stoke City
27.14 - Chelsea
27.13 - Bolton Wanderers
26.72 - Wigan Athletic
26.63 - Burnley
26.28 - Manchester City
26.28 - Tottenham Hotspur
26.19 - Manchester United
26.05 - West Ham United
26.03 - Sunderland
25.93 - Everton
25.09 - Wolverhampton Wanderers
24.79 - Liverpool
24.62 - Arsenal

So we will be 27.84 where a 10th counts loads. That means we could be significantly older than Chelsea were last year and look at the age based drop in their play. And it would make us the 4th oldest on this list of teams that finished in the bottom half. So we would be writing off next year. But we could be writing off this year, for the so called experience effect. Which I don't believe. You want one Davids, not half a team of over 30's.

I remember our club signing Terry Yorath in another lifetime, he was 29/30 at the time and I thought that was ancient.

Yeh but this doesn't show an accurate picture.

We don't have a lot of young unproven players around the squad because we're trying to build something now. Teams like Utd can put in 5 or 6 over 30's and then balance that with 5 or 6 under 21's cause they have an already established team.

At the end of the day the only regular squad player we have who is over 30 is Gallas.

Cheap, versatile, knows the Prem inside out, organiser, 100% every game........would never have seen this one coming (who would), but he would be a good addition in midfield I reckon. Far cheaper than Parker.

About five years ago we bought Danny Murphy in the transfer window and everyone went huh???? - he really didn't play that often (and when he did he was often out of position). On the surface Phil Neville would maybe seem like one of those weird signings but I would imagine he would get plenty of playing time in the next five months and would contribute more to Tottenham than Murphy ever did.

Panic over.

SSN just reported quotes from David Moyes stating that Harry and him had a brief convo before the window opened and then Kenwright and Levy had an even shorter convo at our game recently and it was agreed that it would go no further.

He's categorically stated Neville is their captain and won't be leaving......so there ya go, story is dead in the water :)

Median age, btw, would be 28. Which means half of our players would be over 28.

Not sure how you've worked this out. There are 30 players with us right now and only 9 of them are over 28, even so the players who are over 28 are:

Pavlyuchenko (29), Keane (30), Gomes (29), Gallas (33), Crouch (29), Cudicini (37), King (30), Pletikosa (32), Woodgate (30).

Keane - trying to sell.

King & Woodgate - long term injuries, hence why Gallas was brought in.

Cudicini & Pleitkosa - both backup keepers, really not impacting our age problem.

David Moyes has confirmed Tottenham made an approach for Phil Neville before the start of the transfer window, but has ruled out the prospect of Everton's captain leaving the club.

Spurs have been linked with a host of players in recent days, David Beckham among them, and Neville's name cropped up on Tuesday. Harry Redknapp added fuel to the fire when confirming his admiration for the former Manchester United man.

Moyes has confirmed he fielded an enquiry from Redknapp, but revealed it was rebuffed.

"I spoke with Harry Redknapp briefly before the transfer window opened," Moyes told the club's official website. "Daniel Levy and Bill [Kenwright] had an even briefer conversation at our recent game against Spurs and mutually agreed that this would go no further.

"At no time was any offer made - nor would one have been welcomed. Phil Neville is our captain and is an important part of the Everton set-up."

Charlie might not be great, but we have to be careful, we lose him and Kranjcar, which is a possibility, and we might unsettle our most important player... :eek:mg:

Yup, I had a look at it and though "all those players are much better than Phill Neville".

Point taken though. As for the Neville deal, it never look like as was going to happen did it? I mean this football predictions article highlights just how unlikely it was. Having said that, it does seem Harry is keen to get some experience in and around White Hart Lane...

Jesus wept, this latest 'done deal' ITK is hopefully as reliable as the usual done deal ITK, aka pure rumour and unlikely to ever happen!
