I wouldn't be surprised if Levy's reply was, "F*** Off".

I dunno. Levy is a shrewd businessman. First options aren't a statement of intent to sell, nor is it agreeing a future fee. Barcelona have had a first option on getting back Fabregas for about 5 years now, but it means diddly squat as we've seen. Real are notorious for paying huge money for players, so if Levy was to sell either he'd likely want rid of them outside the UK (he won't want City, Chelsea, Utd to get them), and the one team that can afford huge transfers out of the UK is Real.

So really the signing off on a first option is nothing, because if either Modric or Bale did want to leave Levy would be peddling them to Real anyway. It is signing off on something that is meaningless, really, and Levy'd got VdV and Benzema out of it.

Just found this from October. Adds a little extra smoke to suggest there may be a fire ...

Harry Redknapp ready to swoop for star in January.

Tottenham have made Real Madrid star Karim Benzema a January transfer target, Goal.com UK can reveal.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp will closely monitor the France striker’s situation at the Bernabeu with a view to an audacious move when the transfer window opens.

Benzema, 22, could be on his way out of the Spanish capital because of a lack of playing time and a frosty relationship with new coach Jose Mourinho.

Tottenham are desperate to sign a top class striker in January to aid their challenge to finish in the top four of the Premier League again and will keep a close eye on Benzema to see if he becomes available.

Benzema has failed to cement a place in the Madrid side since his €35 million (£30.6m) move from Lyon last summer but remains one of the hottest talents in European football.

Spurs have the money to buy a big name striker and tried to sign the likes of Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan and Sevilla’s Luis Fabiano over the summer but their efforts were frustrated.

Redknapp has up to £25m to spend on a goalscorer and is hopeful that, should Benzema become available, he will be attracted by the chance to repeat Rafael van der Vaart’s renaissance since leaving the Bernabeu for north London on the last day of the summer transfer window.

“Harry didn’t try to sign Benzema this summer because he thought he had no chance but if there is any chance of signing him in January the club will do everything it can,” a Spurs insider told Goal.com UK.

“He played with Van der Vaart at Real Madrid and maybe that could convince him that Tottenham is the best place for him to kickstart his career.”

Tottenham could face competition from some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including Manchester United and Italian giants Juventus, but believe that they have a genuine chance of securing his signature.

Chairman Daniel Levy signed Van der Vaart for a bargain £8m and would now like to do more business with Real Madrid, although no contact has yet been made regarding the player.

Benzema scored nine goals in 32 appearances last season and has largely been restricted to substitute roles this term under former Chelsea boss Mourinho.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Angel Di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain appear to currently be Mourinho's preferred front three, although the Frenchman has vowed to force his way into the side.

Tottenham's four strikers – Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Robbie Keane – have scored just one Premier League goal between them this season in seven matches.

Redknapp wants a forward who can play in the lone striker role, guarentees goals and is suited to English football - and he believes Benzema fits the bill.

Benzema would immediately become the focal point of the attack at White Hart Lane, something he could deem attractive after failing to get a consistent run of games at Madrid.

In the wake of Van der Vaart’s signing, Benzema would become another genuine star signing for Spurs as Redknapp looks to build a side that could challenge for the Premier League following their Champions League qualification at the end of last season.

Why would levy say fuck off ?

Everything has a price, the fact we are considering moving because of money proves everything has a price, and Bale and modric are no different, don't kid yourself.

Levy probably didn't say "fuck off"

Levy probably said "60 million"..........each!

Mate

Adebayor is confirmed on Real Madrid's OS.

they are trying to sign another striker too as the Aguiro bid suggests so Benzema, whilst not deffo coming to us, has his real days numbered

They've bid for Aguero already?

Guillem Balague did an article on the Sky Sports yesterday in relation to the Adebayor transfer saying that it was a temporary fix until they were able to bid for Aguero and Llorente in the summer.

Possible good news if they're going for Aguero already - unless they want to part exchange Benzema for him...!

haha i guarantee you he won't leave Athletico for Madrid.

He is not from Madrid and so does not have the affilliation that Torres has. he is argentinian, he is the son-in-law of Maradona and if one of the top teams in the world comes knocking for you, you go.....

Real bid 45M which i believe is his buyout price. however Athletico and Real have a gentlemans agreement that the buyout price is irrellevant between the two sides.

lets see what happens

I can't see him coming to us. Such a non spurs style signing. We tend to buy players we don't need not crying out for!
