Interestingly Ancellotti setup his Everton team at home to Liverpool with the same tactical plan as JM did with us versus MU. It seems two managers who have both won the Champions League and various League titles with different teams in different countries know how weigh up the pros and cons of both their team and the opposition and come to a conclusion of how to set their team up that differs from many on here! I know who I’d have more confidence in

I would suggest both managers are playing the percentages. But these are not the kind of performances (for Spurs at least) that fans and young, homegrown players can really get behind long term and be proud of.

Totally agree with you but We were actually playing good football up until the first Chelsea game. He went negative big time and used injuries as justification. Not many injuries now and still not going back to playing football.
We're not going to make top four so I'd rather we blooded some youngsters, took off the shackles, went hell for leather and perhaps attracted some more young star players to join us. Unfortunately Mourinho is perhaps not the type of player to attract Sancho types. For example, we have all known for some time time pre JM that Sissoko and Winks are not the answer yet still we persist!

Jesus, we've played one game, against a top side. Let's at least see how we play tomorrow first hey!

Few people would have any gripes with playing reactive football in odd games. We did that under Pochettino as well.

But the things that the good teams these days are doing well (organised pressing, being able to play out from the back and have sustained spells off possession even against good pressing sides), are not something that Mourinho has shown that he's capable of coaching in later years. Hope he's got it in him to change with the times.

I’m going to make a bold prediction that if we don’t smash West Ham with cavalier football then the ‘next manager’ thread will be open for business. I’m surprised not to see it already given how much complaining there’s been.

We stayed compact and pretty much stifled UTD to half chances, most of the time as a result of one of our own errors. I'm sorry that some of you wanted to see us bombing forward and getting screwed on the counter. Even the commentators noted that UTD have always struggled to break teams down that ask them to. Even the bigger teams have sat off them at times because they fear Rashford and Martial's pace in behind.

The long ball needs to change, but Sissoko and Winks barely found any space to make options for our defenders to pass to. Honestly though, if Lamela had not dallied on the ball on a couple of occassions and had Kane been fully fit, we'd have had the second goal.
One of my biggest criticisms of Poch was his naivety in matches like this. A bit like I used to be when I played FM back in the day - too lazy to change my tactics for a big game. Jose's game plan almost worked to perfection here (they got lucky with the pen, but we got lucky with Lloris' wonder save and Dier's block). And the Winksoko midfield is doing us no favours in terms of playing short passes. When Lo Celso starts we'll be looking a lot better going forward.

I am keen to see how we play at against West Ham, and other non-top 5 teams. Before the break we were too cautious against the likes of Norwich and Southampton and still did not get results. Maybe that was due to a lack of Kane and Son. Maybe not. I can stomach a low block and prioritising not conceding in the really important games (as long as we win more than we lose!). But not for the other 90% of matches we play, where keeping possession and scoring goals is a much better form of 'defence'. Tomorrow night I am hoping that he keeps Lamela, Bergwijn and Moura as impact subs after an hour to really inject some pace and aggression into our game as West Ham tire, and start with a team like this who are told to go on the front foot and win the game:

Lloris
Sissoko Sanchez Dier Davies
Winks Lo Celso
Dele Ndombele Son
Kane

Change to this after an hour ...

Lloris
Sissoko Sanchez Dier Davies
Winks Lo Celso
Moura Lamela Bergwijn
Son

“Good player, good professional, good boy. Congratulations to my club, the way they did it. Initially, and I’m always very honest on this, he wasn’t my first option when we decided to make a movement in the winter. But in the end, a great decision”.

He’s speaking about Stevie Bergwyn. Hope Jose gets used to the not getting his first options in the transfer market.

I thought the only chance they created was from Davinsons poor clearance in the first ... Hard pressed to go in two down on the balance of that. Being critical is one thing, rewriting an entire half to fit a narrative is another.

As you say, see the game, like most of life, differently.

I'd say we played some decent stuff as an eleven. The outfield ten all seemed to know what they were doing both with and without the ball. Second half we went to shit. The changes Ole made, Jose was slow to adapt to them, deeper and deeper and well the inevitable happened.

Reminded me of Pochs early games, but we'll gloss over that for now.

Boo Mourinho, boo.

In pochs first season we actually got better as the game went on. We scored a lot of late winners.

Sissoko rb?

Yes. But mainly tasked with dominating that flank and not making the three or four stupid errors that Aurier does every game.

So when we have the ball...

Lloris
Sanchez---Dier---Davies
Winks
Ndombele----LoCelso
Sissoko----------Dele-----------Son
Kane

and when we don't...

Lloris
Sissoko Sanchez Dier Davies
Winks Lo Celso
Dele Ndombele Son
Kane

Similar to how we usually play.

He wasn't sure about lo Celso either at the beginning. What I like about him is that he appears to be willing to give players a shot and judge them on performances rather than if he fancied them at the start.

Some people are so desperate to have something to respond when rival fans talk about our lack of trophies that they sold themselves to this footballing devil mourinho.
