Agreed but that are also supposedly closing in on Smalling for £25m and a potentially larger fee for Rose. If both come off that's a huge overall outlay.

That would be another CB out of United, hopefully making their need for Toby even more pressing ?

Is this a case of us trying to revive the deal or are the papers just late to the party?

Possibly, although I don't think there's been any actual press indication that it's off, so they could well be recycling info.

I have no reason to doubt @Trix info as it's direct from the source. Doesn't mean we don't go back, but certainly suggests it won't be £20m!

Grealish, Ceballos & Zaha in with Alderweireld, Dembele, Nkoudou & Janssen out would be an excellent scenario going into next season.

Lloris
Vorm
Gazzaniga
*Trippier
Aurier
*Walker-Peters
Vertonghen
Sanchez
Foyth
*Carter-Vickers
**Davies
*Rose
Dier
Wanyama
Sissoko
*Winks
*Skipp
Ceballos
Eriksen
*Grealish
*Dele
Lamela
Lucas
Son
*Zaha
*Kane
Llorente

With the new homegrown quotas coming in in 2020 boosting the HG minimum from 8-12 this would give us 10 HG players in our squad, with the opportunity to use our backup GK slots with Vorm & Gazzaniga, along with our backup striker slot with Llorente to add the further required 2 leaving space for a further nonHG player should one catch Pochettinos eye. (I've put 2 stars next to Davies name a star he counts as homegrown in the Prem but not in Europe so he'd domestically take the number up to 11 at present). We'd also only have 16 nonHG players so there would be space for other nonHG in that department as well.

So, in a nutshell what I'm trying to say is we should sign Grealish + 2 more this summer ;)

Is that HG number verified or just a proposal?

Not sure, looks like just a proposal at present. This is what Greg Dyke said about it in 2015:

Former chairman of the English FA, Greg Dyke, said in 2015:

“First, we want to raise the existing requirements on homegrown players in Premier League squads, so that by 2020 12 of a 25-man squad will be homegrown, rather than the eight it is today, with at least two players having come through the academy of the club they play for."

Either way having good quality HG in your squad is good business as other teams will have to pay higher for them due to their niche and the teams minimum squad needs

C£160m spent on Grealish (£30m), Ceballos (£30m) & Zaha (£60m) & c£70m in from moving Toby along for £40m, Dembele for £10m, Nkoudou for £10m and Janssen for £10m and apart from contract extensions for Jan & Eriksen, we'd be pretty much safe and set for the next couple of seasons, as well as have sufficient HG & nonHG quotas. It would also give Pochettino wiggle room to buy further nonHG players with Vorm, Gazzaniga, Sissoko & Llorente on the fringes

It would still also leave a massive centre back hole in our squad imo

I do agree but as some have pointed out Toby will be our backup defender this year if he isn't sold so I'd like to think with Foyth, CCV, Dier &a Davies having the ability to play as a central defender if need be that we'd probably promote Foyth and use the other 3 as alternatives with the squad looking pretty diverse.

I can see us focusing our attention on a good central defender signing next summer with Jan turning 32 by then

Not for me. I'd promote Skipp as number 6 who has been amazing this pre-season and move Dier to CB where he plays best.
With Wanyama possibly suffering long term injuries, id say this is mad. Ive had similar discussions regarding Walker-Peters last year and in the left back thread today, so I wont repeat every point. People just seem overkeen to replace proven quality with youngsters, moreso than Poch.

Jan is a rolls Royce of a defender. Could still be quality at 35 if he keeps on shape.

CCV and Davies covering centre half...people wanting Georgiou and Walker Peters to cover a Rose sale in other thread. Have people forgot we're a Champions League team and not a league two side working on the tightest of budgets.

Foyth looks great on the ball, but I’m not convinced he is ready yet to step in at CB. And if Dembele goes and with Wanyama’s knee dodgy, Dier is going to be needed as a CM.

He could do but he could also fall away during the years 32-35.

I'd like to think that Foyth has developed enough over the last year with us that he could step in if need be should Toby leave and we aren't able to secure a Pavard/ De Ligt type replacement. I really like the natural talent Juan seems to have

We are working to a budget though. If we play 4 at the back and play Jan & Davinson from the off with Dier able to drop in if need be, Foyth behind them in the pecking order with CCV as part of the 25 man squad and Davies able to shift in there like he does for Wales if the shit hits the fan it's doable. Not ideal as I would like another player coming in to replace Toby but Toby's position at Spurs is far less stronger now than it was 12 months ago since Davinson came on the scene.

We had our best Premier League finish with Jan, Toby, Dier & Wimmer as our centre back pairing only 15 months ago. Davinson & Juan coming in plugs the gaps long term for Toby and Kevin's squad places perhaps.

Ideal scenario is that we do bring in a CB but that could really stifle Foyths development and I've got high hopes for him. I don't rather focus on a good replacement for Dembele than a god replacement for Toby given one of the other

Does anybody not think the ITK about us dropping interest is actually to back up a negotiating threat of walking away and looking elsewhere ? And that this has now worked with them seemingly having cracked and ready to do business at closer to £20m ?

ITKs are I'm sure passing on honest info but their contacts up the chain may well be pulling levers. Pretty sure this had been done before and is quite an obvious tactic.

No point threatening to walk away from a deal and letting it be known through the usual channels that you're actually super-interested

Possibly but the best way to do that would be leaking info to the press.

The 'missing' Jack Grealish shots from the Villa photoshoot have surfaced on Twitter, so he was definitely present, which makes it all the more curious that his photos were left out of the final article.

Jack has also remained completely silent on all social media again last night and today.
