Am I a Football Snob?

For 23 years I have been a Spurs fan, through mediocrity, mediocrity, mediocrity and now finally awesomeness I have supported Spurs. I live in New Zealand, for the majority of my time when ever people have asked me who I supported and I would say Spurs and then they would laugh at me. For the most part the football fans in New Zealand are made up of a ton of United fans, tons of Liverpool fans, lots of Arsenal fans and quite a lot of Chelsea fans, then what's left is spread through out the remaining teams. I could live with that, I've never liked bandwagon fans.

Then Ryan Nelsen signs for Spurs.

New Zealand Captain Ryan Nelsen.

New Zealand Football Legend and leading Icon Ryan Nelsen.

Already people are posting on Facebook how they are now going to buy a Spurs shirt. Its the biggest football news to happen in this country since Nelsen lead the All Whites to an unbeaten run in the 2010 World Cup. He is our David Beckham.

And I hate that this has happened. Ryan Nelsen is a brilliant player who makes everyone around him play better. He is a born leader. But I hate hate hate the fact that there will now be a lot of people in New Zealand who will now buy a Spurs shirt, tell people their favourite team is Spurs and not know the names of any other player other than Ryan Nelsen. No idea who Modric, Bale or Mauricio Tarricco is they only know of Nelsen.

I feel as though I am one of those people who doesn't like a band now that they have become popular.

I don't know whether it is wrong to feel this way but I just feel so gutted that we signed a player who I have always thought was awesome. It just doesn't seem fair that I'm now going to be surrounded by a bunch of so called Spurs bandwagon fans going on how much they love Spurs for as long as Nelsen plays for us.

Maybe I'm a **** for thinking this way but fuck, I'm just pissed off.

Wow, impressive. And I was just gutted that we'd got him instead of Samba. Nice to get some perspective on him, but will he actually be fit enough to play much?

Looking on the bright side, Spurs fans have already decided we hate Ryan Nelsen. Without giving him a chance. I guarantee he'll be booed - especially and particularly if he doesn't make many mistakes - and before long all right-thinking New Zealanders will think Spurs fans are a bunch of cocks. Especially you as you were one even before Nelsen joined.

See, there's always a silver lining if you look hard enough

As far as his fitness goes, Blackburns doctors didn't know what to do. He came here early January to see some doctors here. He played for Blackburn's Reserves today so he should be fully fit 2-3 weeks away.

Silent S? Of course but no one should be surprised.

Thats true, and all those ****s who bought Spurs shirts with Nelsen on the back only to see him leave in 6 months (although if he's fit and plays then Redknapp will extend it for next season) would have wasted their money.

Then 2 to 3 years from now I can buy a Spurs shirt, get Nelsen on the back and mock the fans who now support QPR.

Surprised he didn't join QPR to be honest, Mark Hughes signed him for Blackburn, made him the captain after only his 12th game and said he was the best signing he ever made.

I know exactly how you feel, unfortunately it's only going to get worse. Conversations with bandwagon Spurs fans is a horrible experience, the worst bit is when it dawns on you the person knows sod all about the club but it's too late to escape the conversation. I actually feel sorry for all the genuine Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool fans who have to put up with it on a regular basis.

I remember the first 'Spurs' fan I bumped into in Louisiana - he told me he didn't mind Arsenal (going as far as to say he would rather lose to Arsenal than any of Chelsea/Man Utd/Liverpool) and hoped that West Ham would come back up. You have to bite your tongue, walk away and try and avoid them in future otherwise you'll go crazy, start shouting and flinging your own poo at them.

Look Barmy you were an original trekker accompanying Moses on his original 40 year sojourn....you were an original christian as Constantine swung the Roman empire over in support....you were a local hillclimber as the world discovered Machu Picchu as a tourist resort.....I live in oz and have seen the signs for Spurs....they now sell Tottenham shirts in Rebel. Knowing New Zealanders they will be taking the shirts off if we are leading ten minutes from the end anyway:grin:

This is from his agent
“We settled with Blackburn and have reached agreement with Spurs,” Yorks said from England. ”We’re just awaiting clearance. It’s for six months, with a one-year option. It all unfolded quickly. [Spurs Manager] Harry Redknapp has always been a big fan of Ryan. When the opportunity came up, it really played itself out today”

Blackburn released him and so I think we have signed him on a free transfer, just have to wait for the paperwork to be rubber stamped I think.

Mate - I wouldn't worry too much about it. He's not going to be with us for that long anyway. Yeah, you may have to use the old line 'I was a fan before he signed for us'. And whilst that does suck, I know a bunch of Chelsea fans who are constantly having to show that they were supporters before Roman's billions came in.

It's something that comes with us now being a top team. There is going to be bandwagon support for us in many places.

Besides, it's good for the club to have a bit more presence in NZ. I'm moving there in August, so at least there will be two of us 'proper fans'...

Is there a massive Blackburn fanbase in NZ just because he played for them?

They get as much media coverage here as the the "Top Four" clubs do.

Blackburn kind of became everyone's second team so to speak.

To be fair, I hope that West Ham come back up... Good derby and all that.

Barmy, this is an easy situation to rectify. Your fellow New Zealanders will be buying new shiny up to date Spurs kits. You on the other hand, I hope, are still the proud owner of kits from years gone by......stick them on and wear them with pride :)
