I agree, it doesn't matter whether or not you like Jose, he's here now and we'd be really stupid not to see if he can win something. I'm 67 and so tired of our reputation as losers and an occasional spectacular win. Poch gave us 2 years of feeling as though we could win anywhere and that was amazing. But the dynamics between Poch and Levy and Pochs inexperience cost us. We pretty much all agree if Jose doesn't win us a cup soon he'll be gone. So at least let's give him a chance, I hope Levy does.

People overact both ways.

I joined recently and have enjoyed it here and been overtly critical of him. If we win im not gonna come on and start ranting about him, I'd rather enjoy the win. I've also been more quiet as I've gone back to work but when we were doing badly the mood of this thread was hugely different so either its totally divided on here and people only post if they were correct and /or people are too quick to judge because of one win or one loss.

See my post above for my reasoning for not liking him.
Absolutely- that’s why I was saying that the middle ground would be better.

We cancel each other out so the balance of the universe is restored.
Lol.
I totally get the dislike of JM, whether it's his personality or the perceived style of his Football, it's not for everyone.

WRT his personality, I tend to read between the lines there. Ones public persona is, more often than not, the polar opposite to ones private persona. I particularly loved the Paddy Power advert he did where he poked fun at himself. I'm also ok with arrogance when it's earned, and he's earned it in spades.

But that's my own personal opinion which I don't expect to be shared.

It's funny you know, when Alli was in his prime 2 seasons ago, we loved his arrogant shithousing on the pitch, with many acknowledging that, were he playing for someone else, we'd hate him. He was a **** but he's our ****.

I see it the same way with JM. Whether you think he's a **** or not, he's our **** and we should enjoy that aspect as we've had far too many "nice guys" leading us.

Maybe that's the way forward for those that don't like him? Forget the "he's a ****" and think more along the lines of "he's our **** so fuck the World!"

This is a reasonably wild statement, hope you've got a PhD to back that up.

Jose isn't that complicated a character. He's often openly a dickhead. He's just charming, egotistical, arrogant, successful, rude, grumpy, aggressive...

It's not this hidden darkness, he's quite naked when it comes to his emotions.

What I dislike most about Jose is the circus around him, but I'll tolerate that if he gets us winning. If not, I still think he'll have improved the players ability to execute a tactical game plan.

Not sure if your first sentence is tongue in cheek.

Just pointing out that your theory of personality seemed a little like pseudo-psychology

But in all seriousness, Jose is paid to win football matches and he uses everything in his power to do that. He is the absolute master of getting under the skin of opposing teams and managers (think Martin o Neil and Celtic in Europa League final). In whatever way he can he uses press conferences to get teams riled, put pressure on and make people frustrated.

Before he joined us I used to love it when we beat his teams because it worked, I was a bit like Keegan, I always lost it as a fan.

I also admired it, it's very clever indeed, if somewhat distasteful at times.

Yet, people that meet him and players that play for him, say he is nothing like that in person. He is compassionate and encouraging and funny. The point is, none of us know his personality really. Everything he does in the media is a presentation of himself for the public eye and oftentimes is presented with the goal of winning football matches.

So the poster is kinda right. Oh and it's not psuedo psychology, there's a long history in that field of studying the difference between how we present ourselves in public and how this is different from who we are (or claim to be) E.g. how we act at home with friends and how we act at work, or on football forums :)

I think my issue was this being the opposite. I agree with what you've said above. I just don't like that binary idea, like if you act confident then you are therefore hiding the fact that you have no confidence. It's too blunt and that's where the pseudo claim came from.

Did a quick Google of Goffmans and Mischel, a welcome tangent from the general thrust of this thread.

I'm on board with idea of the self is a role we play, all the world's a stage... But I did English not sociology or psychology so I can't back it up.
