Except, of course, when he helped France win the world cup...he was majestic...that was peak pogba...not seen much of that guy since.
I don't recall him being that great in the world cup either....his biggest achievement was to resemble a functioning midfielder but certainly nothing special

I think the reality is, you're going to get some people who struggle mentally with the switch than others, regardless of how good their playing ability is the mental aspect is ultimately what takes control.

I imagine the club could probably see that Tanguy has some mental fragility but his talent is so big they were willing to take a risk they normally would not. They probably knew it'd take time to build him up.

Then you look at reguilon the guy oozes confidence. His welcome singing vidso showed that much, he seems to be mentally strong and nothing fazes him. Made a mistake vs Chelsea and came back swinging.

You look at Sonny, he took a season to adapt wanted to go back to Germant and Poch would not let him now he's dancing at old trafford after banging his 2nd. It is very player dependant and I hate that a fee is this huge weight around a player because he didn't pick his transfer fee, he didn't force spurs to take that risk and the fee and wages are irrelevant if you're lacking confidence. There's other players like it, look at Keita at Liverpool, similar fee and has taken him 2 seasons and he's just now getting starts.

The biggest example for me in terms of ths way the mental aspect affects a player is Fernando Torres. Even taking account of injuries he just suddenly got in his own way and turned into a shell of his former self. Tanguy seemingly has the life drained from him when he wasn't getting starts, I think we saw in the documentary the language barrier was not helping whatsoever and that's where the new culture starts to add issues to the situation. If he's starting week in and week out then like Ancelotti said the adaption takes care of itself.

I remember he scored a couple at the start of his second season and telling my dad the score and asking him to guess who got the goals. He couldn't guess as Son had been completely forgotten. Crazy how unthinkable that is now.

I do hope this hasn't been posted already .This is NDombele's September , superb stuff .

Looks great but these YouTube videos don’t tell the whole story of Tanguy this year vs. last. To be honest you’d could make one of these 3-4 minute videos from last year which would make him look amazing too. This year though he has improved dramatically in his positioning, his movement and desire to follow runs and most importantly to me his composure. He is able to be much more involved now and dictate play rather than just be reactionary. Video doesn’t show that but that is what has impressed me.

What is also noticeable is his change in body shape even from some of the earlier games here to the Chelsea game he is getting leaner by the week and is obviously working hard to improve his fitness... hopefully he has kept on it during the international break and he could be at peak fitness for west ham.

Excellent from Tanguy, also excellent from the rapper in the video who has clearly suffered from severe mental trauma or perhaps a recent lobotomy but still manages to rap is an inspiration to us all.

maybe I am old and think differently the current generation are a bunch of soft snowflakes ....
if you or I got a job abroad paying GOOD money do you think your new employer would let you get away with not being at your best after a very short settling in period (a month tops) ? You would be out on your ear ! Yet we sit here and make excuses for them... these are elite athletes who Should be able to adapt to new physicality's by training harder etc ...
There are plenty of examples in every generation of that type of behaviour. Every generation tends to believe the preceding generation is lazy and naive. The reality is that every generation is little better educated and a little less ignorant than the last.

Okay first of all you're being disingenuous because he was brought in develop and that was made clear by Poch at the time because before the season started he said this:

Then he said this

So you're literally making up your argument to suit your position and it's simply not true. The club has reaffirmed this since Poch left and explained he was given a 6 year deal because they knew it was a long term investment and no matter how you feel about the money spent that is the case.

The rest really shouldn't need explaining to you, playing in the premier league is vastly different to france, the physical demands are much higher, you need to be fitter in terms of stamina, speed, strength. No desk job in the world that you would need to transition to would have the amount of variable change of adapting from ligue 1 to the premier league. There's physical demands on an athlete adapting to a different way of playing which simply can't be compared to you or me switching jobs.

Now a large part of the difficulty for him was that we changed managers at a time when he was injured and he wasn't starting. You can literally see in the documentary how much harder not starting made things difficult for him, perhaps he could have culturally adjusted if he was starting week in and week out on the football pitch but he wasn't. Under Poch he was starting fairly regularly but suffered injuries which is part and parcel of adjusting to the new physical demands of the league.

I agree in general but and 8m the world's biggest NDombele stan but he clearly struggled more than other imports from France, clearly struggled more than almost all of his peers in the league from whatever background, and clearly struggled for Spurs where he wouldn't have for Lyon.

He played for Lyon weekly in matches far more demanding than those he faced with us in the Europa League. He's played against Premier League opposition for Lyon without incident and with no signs of fitness issues. He's played in the Champions League for Lyon, excellently. In all directly-comparable scenarios, there's still a difference in output.

I know there are more variables but it's not solely down to acclimation. He has a comical fitness reputation for Spurs that's meme fodder among spurs supporters and football fans generally. Whether or not that's earned is besides the point, you don't survive a club like Lyon with such consistent fitness concerns. Ligue 1 is still elite football requiring elite athleticism.

Yes agree with this and yes NDombele's YT clips from last year prolly would be similarly breathtaking . However for this old time Spurs supporter its these magical moments that are the true manna from heaven . To have a player in a Spurs shirt pulling off these amazing moves
is a deep pleasure (y)

He definitely is not

People seem to assume that just cause his passing is good Kane would make a good midfielder. In heavy traffic he’d get robbed of the ball...that’s where Tanguy excels
Kane rarely loses the ball when in possession even in heavy traffic.

I know it’s not a fair comparison, but I think Kane’s a better midfielder than Ndombs.
I think that Kane is better on the ball than 99% of midfielders. Out of possession, his positioning and tackling would probably need some work on the training pitch, if he was to convert to a CM.

2 things stand out:
  • The way he uses his body to shield the ball and disguise the turn.
  • The way he uses every part of his foot to almost "shape" the pass.
Both techniques show a natural intelligence and reading of the physics of the game. Its one of those innate talents that, when combined with experience, results in one of those unique players who can read and understand the game quicker than other players. See Scholes, Zidane, our own Dembele.

There is a special player burgeoning here.

Excellent scouting. This is exactly the kind of player we need. Do it Levy!

watch the video and try and think what will ND do next its near impossible his so unpredictable but his quality is insane the guy sucks players in, then embarrasses them or does an outrageous flick, or pass. He will be the best player in the world if he wants to be, how do you play against him without just fouling the shit out of him?

In watching the game against United, I noticed that defenders seemed to purposely be giving him a little space, as if more worried about his lethality in close quarters than they were about his passes in space.

Also a huge mistake on their part because he knows how to thread an inch perfect pass.

We haven't even scratched the surface with Tanguy, he is at about 50% of his full potential.

Give this man more time and as his confidence grows he will be one of if not the best midfielder in the league behind De Bruyne.

I watched the re-run of Matt Le Tissier with Gary Neville on Sunday and one thing Neville pointed out was how Le Tiss would have fared better if the Dell wasn't as cramped as it was to which the response from Matt was actually quite the opposite - that he used the fact that it didn't require physical exertion finding out space he could rely on his superior close quarter technique to glide past players.

I feel Ndombele is of similar ilk in that he is actually much more comfortable in tight positions on the pitch and such is the tendency from a lot of teams to press and utilise the high line, he is absolutely tailor made to exploit this with quick, incisive passing to find the likes of Kane, Son and now Bale in space.
