Nobody thinks, or should think, he's a winger. He's a left-footed forward who plays on the right and cuts inside. The idea with a player like him is that he plays on the right of a 4-3-3, which it would certainly appear is what we're attempting to do under AVB. Honestly from what I've seen, Hulk reminds me of a souped-up Defoe, just in a different position. Similar goal-hungry mindset, similar direct play, just Hulk is more talented. My worry is that, like Defoe, though he'll put up decent (or in Hulk's case, outstanding) numbers, you can't really build a team around him and he doesn't really have a place as a first option for a team looking to really make noise. ALSO, not unlike Defoe, when he was at Porto he picked up a reputation as being something of a flat-track bully, though I can't really speak to that as I'm much more familiar with Defoe's day-in, day-out record than Hulk's.
Lamela is supposed to be a more central player, though he has played on wing cutting in. This is largely because of Totti's presence and mini-renaissance at Roma; from what I've seen from Roma fans they view him as Totti's heir, which would be in, essentially, a free role (they call it a trequartista.) He would be a very interesting addition, as there's a pretty compelling argument to be made that he's one of the most talented young players in the world. The statistics show him to be an absurdly talented dribbler, I believe he had the third-most successful dribbles in Serie A last season. It's hard for me to believe we'd get him, because that just doesn't seem possible, but if we do... oh man.
Theres one Huge thing you are overlooking here,
Hulk more times than not makes the right decision, his assist stats only tell half the story (and they are excellent)
how many times over the last week have we seen the Argument 'It doesnt matter Willan doesnt Score much because he is an assist machine"
Well Hulk Scores and Assist and can put in a good team shift, similar to how he played in the Confed Final where he was excellent in a understated role.
You dont need players to build teams around, look at united for the perfect example, they constantly build UNITS and no player is bigger than the team..... that is why they have been so successful
