Yes if this is a freebie then as much as I dislike Kaboul, I can't say that it's not ingenious. Don't lose money. Get back a commodity. Get some backup.

But playing around on Guardian's chalkboard, his tackles are all over the place for a center half. 10 of his 38 in the last 7 were in the opposition's half. That tells me he is still a bit daff positionally.

I'm not sure about Begovic. I think we should be looking at Westwood from Coventry. For 2-3 million we would be buying a quality keeper who my Cov mates have been raving about for the last 2 years. Having said that, they raved about Davenport before we bought him so what do I know.....

Or a young pro desperate to get his team going and venturing up top just as he did in that infamous Villa 125 game for our lot!!

Yeah, we're probably planning to get him now for cheap since we have leverage over Portsmouth, have him as a backup for CB (and probably DM) for the rest of the season, then if we don't want to keep him we can likely hawk him to Man City or someone for a profit in the summer.

Can we sell him before next January. Is the two club rule for a campaign of a calendar year?

If he had one here and there, I'd see your point. It's like twice a game. That's what worries me. If he's going to come in for cover and leave Bassong or Daws to go venturing into "I'm Pele" land, then that scares me. But I would imagine someone who watches Portsmouth would be able to say if it is desperation or foolishness. But I'd rather you be right.

i really rate begovic - if anything he's too good to be our back up GK -

i thought pompey had satisfied the FA/PL they'd cleared their debts to other clubs

i'm not at al bothered about the £11m tag - who really believes we're paying that - not me for one

i think it looks like good business to me - they can have o'hara on loan as a sweetener

I'm assuming that Begovice will remain there and we will sign him at the end of the season...

He cannot play for another club the same way that O' Hara cannot, JOH is/was on loan at pompey (so it is not about only signing for one club) and we were trying to get special dispensation from FIFA to allow JOH to go on loan to another club because of the terrible circumstaces at Pompey (re, transfer embargo)

I've spoken about Bergovic - its easy to look a good shot stopper when you are expected to concede during a game. That being said, he is better than Alnwick and if cheap will be an ok backup.

Same with Kaboul really, if its free (in lew of what they owe) then he is a decent backup, but really not good enough to become first choice in the future me thinks

Begovic can play for a third club because one of them was a Championship loan and seemingly they do not count...

well if he is happy to be backup (and scare Gomes into toughening up) then it could be good, from what i have seen of him he looked class, great shot stopper and seemed to command his area quite well too (not sure on his kicking though, but Robinson was good at that until, Whoops!)

This has been a quiet window but I would like to say that, it my opinion, our own member "yidio" has probably been the best "ITK" this window. So cheers mate! Thanks, and keep up the good work.

The players we are linked with will improve the squad. I am ok with all of them. BUT. Hopefully in the summer we will buy 1 or even 2 "starters" that will take us to the next level.

If Kaboul's only problem is positional sense like some of u mentioned, then I say we get him now!

If we can teach Lennon how to cross, I'm pretty sure we can teach Kaboul how to position himself. Nobody is born with good positional sense anyway. He's an excellent athlete with speed and power and those cannot be taught, just like Lennon's pace.

Besides, it's better to have an asset and backup rather than lose the money owed to us if Portsmouth disappears.

I don't see how Harry gets the blame their finances, surely they have accountants etc. David James said that he was told that winning the FA could wreck the club because of all the bonuses the club would have to pay out. So who done the sums when they offered the bonuses etc to the players surely its wasn't Harry.

As someone that recruits around ten new staff a year I would feel ashamed to have brought in individuals that so completely failed to adhere to the resources and sustainability of the company (yes, even under The Gay Damak). My staff, my accountability. Of course there is someone over me to veto the signing but it is fact that I have to approve terms and justify the expenditure and end results.

In all seriousness, if anyone can come to me and outline how a manager can justify organising a deal (even if he did have someone that should have vetoed him) that pays John Utaka 80,000 quid a week (that's the best (or indeed worst) part of 5 million pounds per year - four year deal = 20 million pounds sterling of real English money), plus got all his top stars contracts worth similar money or higher, then I'll listen.

Of course, Harry isn't solely responsible but him and Storrie worked on a string of deals that were overwhelmingly irresponsible for Portsmouth Football Club. The Gay Damak's lack of authority is pitiful mitigation and any use of that argument to alleviate Harry from blame is a suggestion that Harry can't be trusted (a caveat noticeable by its absence in posts from his apologists).

Harry worked on these deals, he must share (however small a share) in the blame for them being utter pigshit. He is a wonderful manager and I support him unreservedly but let's be honest, his deals have had a terrible long term effect for Pompey.

If you choose to believe that Redknapp just gave Storrie/The Gay Damak a list of players and had no say in their terms or the resources allocated to them I feel bad for you, son.

I admit I feel much more comfortable in the knowledge that Levy wouldn't let the above happen, but if you're going to give credit for his 'good' signings and money making like this...

BBLG has summarised this situation accurately. The profits Harry made on players he bought in have been massive, about 60m. Some examples:

Diarra: 5m sold at 18m
Johnson: 4m sold at 18m
Muntari: 7m sold at 12.7m
Defoe: 9m sold at 15m

...then surely he must take responsibility when things don't work out, too?

Or does he only 'do' outgoing deals? In honesty, I'd imagine the reverse is true. Actually, that's being facetious. I know the reverse is true(r).

How does this deal work with the sell on clause we have regarding Kaboul?

 Love it!

Right, thanks Pompey. We'll just right off that 5m debt of yours. But, you see, we have this 20% sell on fee and technically you've just sold Kaboul for 5 million pounds so if you can just give us a cheque for a million quid we'll be on our way.
