No, not a good post; just someone who has the same argument as you.

All the players mentioned in this thread (Nicholas, Clemence) are all players from 20-30 years ago - when we were rivals - both on the pitch and trophy wise.

Nowadays, we are not rivals on the pitch. Since we won the FA Cup in '91. They have been in 6 FA Cup finals (won 5), won 4 titles and been runners up 5 times. They have been in 4 European finals (ECWC*2, UEFA CUP and ECL) and they have been in the Champions League for the past 11 seasons.

Since 1991, we have won 2 league cups and 1 FA Cup. We have been in 1 other final. We have never finished higher than 5th in 17 years.

Local rivals, yes. Rivals on the pitch, I wished.

You don't get it.

The trophies are irrelevant!

This rivalry has absolutely nothing to do with trophies, who won what, where, when and how! This rivalry is to do with history, territory, lies & politics.

The whole thing goes straight over your head. I reckon your pretty young (early 20's at the most), don't know the history very well, are probably the new breed of football fan (the stream watcher) and you've probably been to less than a dozen spurs games in your life. The same can no doubt be said of your gooner mates who apparently congratulated you when we beat the Chavs, no real Arsenal fan would be slapping his yid mate on the back and loving him because Spurs won a trophy. The very image of such a thing is laughable.

I'm sure your a good guy and probably so are your scummy Arse mates but the rivalry between Arse & Spurs is something none of you comprehend or understand.

Stop trying to cling on to the past. We are not rivals on the pitch just local rivals. You remind me of one of them 40 year olds hooligans who goes out wanting a fight, clinging on to their youth in the 80's.

I gave you the facts, you just cannot comprehend them. So I shall repeat myself:

Nowadays and for the past 18-20 years, Arsenal and Spurs are just local rivals. We are not rivals on the pitch. We were rivals on the pitch in the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's; as we were both challenging for the same trophies.

In size they are a super club, we are a big club. They could argue that they are twice the size of us: trophy wise, ground wise, supporter wise, turnover wise - which they are, these are FACTS! Do you understand what facts are?

So to summarize, you are wrong; both with your perception of me (very wrong in fact) and likewise with the rivalry of Arsenal vs Spurs. The facts are there and your argument is a futile one. And don't try and belittle me again on here, saying "I am a stream watching supporter" or "I bet you have only been to 12 matches in your lifetime" etc.. because like I said, you are wrong.

But it's obvious from what you post that you know your club.

I love all this shit.

From the older lot on here: ss57, or Legend10. If you agree with them then its "you know your club" pat on the back time, or if you disagree with them, then its "are you an Arsenal fan"? or "I bet you have only been to 12 games in your lifetime" or "you are a stream supporter" etc..

Old codgers!

Probably cheer themselves up and buy a sovereign ring.

Brilliant, SLS!!

A nice slice of fresh-baked rep coming your way!

I win.

You argument is a futile one, so then you result in trying to belittle me/insult me, question my loyalty to the club etc..

You are a condescending old fool. You like SS57 have to learn to take it on the chin and realise that you cannot be correct all of the time.

You only had to read the reactions following the United FA Cup game and the 5-1 game to see which is still the bigger rivalry.

But it's obvious from what you post that you know your club.

See, this is the bit that I don't like - suggesting that just because you have a different opinion you 'don't know your club'. There is a perfectly rational argument for this away from any knowledge you may or may not have of the club.

I'm 28, followed Spurs since 1986, supported them properly since 1989/90 season, go to about 10 games a season, watch the rest at home, and I have friendly banter with two Arsenal season ticket holders in my office. There's no hatred there, but that's because any sane person knows that you hate Arsenal the club, not the individuals, because of the history.

However, while an age-old turf war sustains a rivalry, I think it's a fair point that we're not their 'biggest' rivals in the modern age. You're wrong about it having nothing to do with cups and leagues, the very definition of rivals is that they are attempting to achieve the same goals, hence the 'rivalry' between them, and, in addition, should either equal or almost equal each other, keeping that rivalry going. It's in black and white.

While many will say 'well, we're going for the league and the cups, same as them', the realist will point out that while we've been competing for a UEFA Cup place and, not so long ago, a Champions League qualifying spot, their goals are primarily winning the league and the Champions League, something which Man Utd are their biggest rivals for.

I would argue this can be split into a 'turf war' and a 'professional rivalry', which makes both sides right.

See, that's me, doing my impression of Switzerland yet again.

But it is the case that you understand your history and like it or not, a huge part of supporting Spurs is recognising the enemy down the road. Bar the odd one or two games, I can't remember us not putting in a performance against Arsenal in the last 10 years. Matching them on the pitch, if not in terms of final result but definitely for general play.

Yeah they've had a relatively succesful decade, but nothing more than what we've achieved - and dare I say we've achieved it with more grace, more popularity and the right way. Arsenal have played some gorgeous football, and it actually gave me a physical pang to type that, but they undermine it all by their lack of grace, sportsmanship and by the fact that they're all ****s lead by the King of the ****s (capital c), Wenger.

I've only over the last 3 years been able to go to games regularly, due to financial and location (uni) reasons. But I can tell you my hatred for them, 3 NLDs later, has increased a hundred fold.

So it may be a harsh truth, and not to say that just because you go to the games that your opinion is worth more, but being there week in, week out only intensifies the love for the football club and with any love there comes in equal measurement a hate so strong that if you're not careful can consume your love.

That's a bit Star Warsy and a bit emotional for 10:00 - but hey - deal with it. :-D

Sorry General Levy, but I'm with the other lads on this one.

I'm actually not that old, well I'm not sure if I am or not really. I'm 40 which sort of puts me somewhere in the middle.

Just to clarify the situation, not once did I call you an Arsenal fan or even imply that you are one. What I said was that I don't believe that you understand where this rivalry comes from. I even said that I'm sure that you are a good guy and included that you arse supporting mates probably are to. So I was hardly attacking you.

My assumption that you are a stream watching fan (not that there is anything wrong with that) was based upon the fact that you invariably start 'player rating' threads whilst the game is still being played. This led me to believe that it was highly unlikely that you were in the stadium.

You don't have to go to spurs matches to support them, not at all, however if you do and you have been doing it for a long time it does in my opinion give you a greater sense of perspective over certain issues. And i firmly believe that in most cases the rivalry between Spurs & Arsenal is 1 of those issues.

With Stoof it is that I agree.

Remember what was the only fixture that you saw the ice-blooded Mr Wenger ACTUALLY SQUARE UP to an opposing manager??

Against Spurs, of course.

Even that reptilian old so-and-so feels the rivalry.

Anyone wanting a brief and well put-together digest of the rivalry can find one at http://rainow.net/Rivals.html

Let's face it, although hatred is essentially a negative thing and probably fucks us all up emotionally, wouldn't football be crap without it?

I'm from Enfield in North London, so I grew up surrounded by gooners - in my secondary school was divided between us and the scum - so that's how that rivalry developed...

Now I live in Stratford and work in Romford, so I'm a bit more aware that West Ham exist ;)

Speaking of London teams we've now THRASHED every London prem team by 4 goals.... except Chelski - let's hope we put that right soon ;)

I'm one of the older lot - and funnily enough have never particularly hated Arsenal - though of course sometimes they **** me off - the older lot actually will remember a time when lots of fans went to Arsenal one week Spurs another - Bruce forsyth still gets stick for supporting both clubs

I can categorically say that at various times in my life there are least five other clubs that I've hated more than arsenal - these days I don't hate any club - we've been too successful for too long for other clubs to get to me on a long-term bais - though when Chelsea for example behave like they did last season iin their Cup win at the Lane - then the old veins start to bulge and I'm up for a ruck - fortunately I'm at home on the sofa and even if I was there would know that all i'm going to do is rage then go home meekly

How does that fit in with the Spurs fans, who back in the old days, would go to watch Arsenal play at Highbury when Spurs were away?

I guess I'm one of the older lot too ( :-( ) because at the end of the day, no matter what the current standing is or what SSN may tell me is the 'big game', Arsenal are our rivals and always will be. And you still get new Arsenal signings in interviews who say when they signed the first thing their fans say to them is 'beat Spurs'.

Shush you, this is my house. Go back to sPeek yOu'Re BraNes.

I suppose the equivalent today would be watching Arsenal on television? Which I expect all people do. Hoping they lose.

Do you know many people that supported Arsenal on their 'defection'? I would hope and expect it was a secret desire for them to watch the enemy get usurped and destroyed.

I miss a good usurping.

Back in the day when crowds were 60 & 70 thousand and there was no football to watch on tv it was inevitable that some people would go to watch 1 team 1 week and another another week just to see football.

IMHO this wasn't a huge number of people and the Bruce's were very much in the minority.

My dad and his mates would never have set foot in the Library unless Spurs were playing, but they would go and watch Orient if they were at home just so they could watch football.
