Of course, Dier is currently a starter in a centre back 3 and 1st choice backup for a 2. I still think we need another able backup player though - particularly if we play 3 at the back more often.
I get your point but very very difficult to find someone at Toby's level, especially one who will play back up. It's like Kane, anyone would be a lot weaker without him no matter what the replacement so there's not a great deal you can do. I'd keep it as it is now- Dier as primary backup with the hope Carter-Vickers really progresses this season.

I guess the problem we have is that with a back three you need that extra defender but not in the 4-2-3-1 where one would be redundant. Since we don't stick to one set formation it's difficult especially since a decent one would cost us £15m plus. Maybe there's a kid from the Championship/League One we could take a punt on to fight it out with CCV?

Different story if Wimmer forces a move though, obviously we'd need someone then.

It's not the price of VVD that matters it's the difference in the price between VVD and Wimmer and with our Daniel involved I have a sneaky feeling that wouldn't be much, mind you I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted some money as well.
Aren't we asking for 20 and aren't they asking for 50?

Instead of putting dier in the back three (which I don't like), can't we put Toby right side, verts as the central guy, and Wimmer on the left. Verts would be great as the guy in the middle stepping out

I would like to see this given a try. I really don't think Dier is anything special as a CB.

Wimmer looked OK when he played in the middle with Verts and Toby each side. Think that was the season before last and can only remember it happening once though.

Only game I remember this happening was at the Emirates last season. Wimmer was unlucky to score an own goal when challenged by an offside player, but didn't do too much wrong.

Wasn't the rumour that Wimmer incurred Poch''s wrath by returning for pre season last year overweight and with a bad attitude thereafter?

Mmmmm, not how I remember. We got torn apart in the first half hour and had to change, tactically we were getting over run. Whilst I don't blame this on Wimmer, he was having a tough game. Unfortunately I was in home end and so remember it well as I feared a drubbing.

Considering Toby, Van & Dier I think he played very well in the small amount of game time he got. There are a lot worse out there! Where is the intel that says Poch lost the trust of the gaffer. Not supposition but who actually said these words?
Moving this since that's only natural.

If he is as good as everybody thinks (which he actually isn't), and if he had the full trust of Pochettino (which I believe he doesn't), you wouldn't see him being the third least used player in the senior squad, playing even fewer minutes than Vorm, during a season in which we frequently deployed 3 CBs at the same time.

Additionally, whether he is "good" or not, is sort of a moot point. There is no room in a tight squad at a trophy ambitious club to keep players who are not trusted. So if we assume that I'm correct that Pochettino simply does not want to play Wimmer, then he must leave, regardless of his assumed ability.

So where does that leave Dier? Battling for a DM slot alongside Wanyama and Dembele?

Doesn't sound like you watched us much last year. In our system the central CB stays deep (Toby) and the wide CBs carry the ball out and join the attack (Dier and Jan).

I think if anything, it'd be Toby RCB, Jan LCB, with Wimmer sitting in the middle of a 3.
I thought that's why Foyth was a good shout, predominantly right footed, but comfortable enough on the ball to get away with playing on the left. Young enough to not be too demanding over game time.
Someone like Jefferson Sanchez is going to expect as much game time as Wimmer is leaving in search of. Maybe someone like Benkovic, who we were previously linked with, is a better shout.

That's a pretty good offer, would be tempted for sure
£30m seems fair in the current market. Half of what they want for Van Dijk and that money would probably secure Davinson Sanchez as well.

30m for wimmer is bananas, i once rated his potential but has not had large chances to shine and has been a bit sloppy at times.

30m would probably get barkley

Nothing we don't know already but an ITK on Saintsweb is saying that Wimmer is their preferred VVD replacement and that it depends on us signing a replacement. With the ITK we've had that Sanchez is close it seems both deals will go through quickly.
