Because we have an embarrassment of riches at RB doesn't mean that other players should be force into different areas of the pitch

I'm a bit confused about Grealish. He's a very good player and I understand why so many people want him in the England team as he creates a lot of chances, but isn't he mainly a LW/RW/AM rather than a CM? Are people asking him to be played instead of one of Sancho/Rashford/Sterling, or played as a CM which doesn't seem to be his usual position? I don't watch much of Villa, so maybe I'm wrong about where he plays.

He's played in both positions. I think he has ended up in an advanced position because they have Barkley and Luiz in the middle. But he started of at LW iirc.

Plays mostly LW for villa, but I would play him in a CM 3 with him being the one that's mostly advanced, think of Dele playing behind Kane type roll with still Stirling and Sancho on the wings.

Against Wales he had a bit of a roving role, e.g. he popped up on the right to cross for DCL's goal, though he started on the left.

I don't think you can really structure a position for a player of his sort of creativity. Allow him to find pockets of space where he can and he's very difficult to police if you're the opposition, he'd be quite destructive in that free role. The structure needs to be around him, with the, for want of a better term, "water carriers" compensating for any holes he leaves when wandering.

He needs time on the pitch to build this kind of understanding with whoever his fellow midfielders are, so Southgate, imo, really should be looking at who most effectively complements Grealish centrally. Look at France with Pogba, we know he can be a liability if you're looking for a structured role from him, but put him alongside Kante and he has the license to Express himself. He looks World class with France, but Championship class with Utd as he doesn't have that backup that Kante provides.

Emulate that with Grealish and I feel the entire dynamic of the England side changes for the better.

I’d certainly have him over Rashford wide left at moment.

Mind you I’d sooner have Sancho and Sterling (when fit) to play either side of Kane.

Would be then interesting in a 4-3-3 to see how Grealish fares in the midfield three (and THAT is when maybe Southgate could justify playing Phillips and arose alongside him!).

Also interested still to see if Sterling magically available for City in their next game...

Ooooh should you look at that, Sterling was fit for Man City and starred in their win...

He’s obviously just a very quick healer. I thought there were rules against doing exactly what Sterling has just done.

So far Southgate has selected 5 RBs Alexander-Arnold, Maitland-Niles, Trippier, Walker and James despite the fact James is facing a 2 match ban for a Red Card

It's as if he wants to get sacked.

I imagine James is picked because he knows that he wants him in the euro squad, and having training time with the players is just as important as game time at this stage.

This is where I personally disagree but its all good

With the quality of RB's we have no player should be getting preferential treatment, he gets injured and its all wasted, especially when Walker, TAA and the way he loves trippier are guaranteed to go to the Euros

I just dont get it at all

Walker at CB isn't good, you get away with against lesser opposition even pep hasn't tried that

Does it matter if he's picked 5 RBs? It's a 29 man squad, it's not like he's dropped others to squeeze them all in. He clearly hasn't decided who he wants in that position yet so wants to have a look at them all.

Looks like there may be an issue with the Iceland-England match as they are playing away in Denmark 3 days before. Also England based Denmark players might not be able to play for Denmark during this international break. PEH might get a well earnt rest.

In a 29 man squad he has picked 5 RB's and 7 midfielders, he's picked a RB who is unavailable and isn't the most in form RB/RWB in the country right now, who is Lamptey

We have such an embarrassment of riches at RB its stupid to even narrow it down to that 5 imo

Whereas at midfield, the most important position on the pitch we have Henderson, Winks, Rice, Ward-Prowse and Mount fighting for two places

Which RB has he picked that isn't available? If you mean James he can play one of the games so is available. Most of the squad will be heavily rotated during these three games so the suspension doesn't really make much difference.
Lamptey might be the most in form over the last half a dozen games, but that doesn't mean he automatically moves ahead of the others. If he's still the form player in March he might get a call up.

Are you saying there are too many, or too few midfielders? Foden and Grealish are also in the squad, so five or six midfielders for three games.

TAA looks like not gonna be available yet again - hasn’t even had scan yet and Klopp ruling him out for England...

PEH will miss the first two games in Denmark, the first a friendly and the second he is suspended. Jose says (today's presser) that he will join up with them for their match in Belgium. This apparently means no quarantine.
