Fans of every team always want two more players, that will never stop.
If we can get the 2 CBs and a GK right in the summer however, we'll look very decent.

Hoping for pics of her naked in just the 86-87 homeshirt to promote it.

All will be forgiven then
I was hoping she'd end the gig doing a duet with Levy. Something like Don't Go Breaking my Heart (Kiki Dee & Elton John for those of you who don't know)

So a critical position Conte wants an upgrade in we have failed to sign someone of a suitable level.
But Conte himself has been critical of the club bringing in players who weren't good enough and then struggling to get them off the books and also said it will take several windows to get the squad where he wants it. That suggests to me that if the CBs that we want aren't gettable within two windows he's prepared to wait.

It just seemed like an odd move. I thought he'd be better off getting prem experience.

It seems like we either got loan with obligation offers from prem clubs that were rejected because we want to keep him, or straight loans from prem clubs where game time wasn’t guaranteed so Spence rejected it.

If we can keep up our recent hit rate I think we'll get there eventually. We've gone from about 1 in 10 signings being a genuine success (think Hojbjerg is the only current first teamer we signed between 2017-2021) to about 2 in 3 since Paratici came in. Couple more years of that and we'll be in a much better place.

If we bring in a manager with a totally different style then all bets are off and we might never fill all the holes as the cycle will start again.

Yeah fully agree with this. Considering the volume of players Paratici has brought his hit rate has been excellent. It definitely helps having a DOF who understands the level of player you need to build a successful team.

I just hope Paratici can continue to work for us as the squad will need that continuity and he ultimately knows what kind of manager we need (if Conte leaves) to get the most out of the squad he’s assembling.

That is something I was thinking about yesterday. Will we ever get to the point where there aren't holes in the squad?
It's tough, because we don't do 'volume'. To be generous (the last 18 months anyway) we are being very surgical. Each window we look at one position that needs upgrading and do exactly that. Bentancur, Deki, Romero, Porro were all positions desperately in need of attention. Four windows, four upgrades. Super. But that's the strategy that the Liverpool of four years ago were employing for good reason. They were stacked in almost every position and could afford to concentrate on that one player per window.

It's been done to death in umpteen threads, but we have squad players that should be 3/4/5th choice starting matches often in three or four positions every match. At some point we are going to have to have a window (probably two consecutively) where we get in six or seven players each time, and sell a minimum of four or five. Can we do that, given how difficult just one deal seems to be to complete? Seems unlikely.

With a bit of luck we might already have two players in Sarr and Udogie who cover another couple of upgrades, but there's no guarantees.

I think Paratici will be gone now whether Conte is here or not. However we've made a ton of recruitment staff appointments of late so i'd expect the success is not all down to him and won't go back to Hitchen levels of scouting incompetence when he does depart.

Think the most difficult part of what you suggest is selling players.

I don’t think we’ll have to buy 7 players in one window though considering how much work has been done so far. Fans might not rate players like Davies, Dier, and Holjberg but they are still decent squad players. In other positions we have decent quality and/or talented young players who will hopefully be at a decent level in 1 or 2 seasons.

Surely you'd prefer a cover of the Led Zep classic "When The Levy Breaks"? I'm sure @Trix would.

Shame about the other CB, but if Antonio is happy with Porro and Danjuma, that's all that matters. Fingers crossed he's back soon and signs that contract. Although @Hercules doesn't think he will....

I agree, even Alasdair Gold's article basically says they realized it while they were doing the loan deal that they had too many out so they switched it to a release. It's not a big deal what-so-ever.

We signed him for 13.4mil and he's only gotten older & slower. For me it's good on us not holding him ransom hoping for a measly fee in the Summer.

I think the point is though that doherty with 18months left would not have happily reduced his guaranteed money to 6 months (madrid contract) without some form of compensation.

Maybe there was a loan fee that ended up in dohertys pocket instead of ours. Or maybe we had to compensate doherty in some form (effectively paying wages for a player who isnt here).

Either way this would have been a freebie at best we lost a fee, at worst out of pocket, but neither is ideal.

Can't remember in which thread it was posted, but someone set out how our central defence looks for each position with starter/back-up if we remove the players who (we think) are not up to scratch (or have the loanee return to parent club), and it's essentially this:

RCB: Romero - Blank
CB: Blank - Blank
LCB: Blank - Blank

So that's five players we need to find straight off the bat, unless we are looking at Dier/Davies/Sanchez continuing for another couple of years.

I'm struggling to think of the right way to put this but here goes: we need to build the squad so that we are never in a position where we need to upgrade (at least) two players for one position. Currently we definitely have that situation in two (CB, LCB) and arguably three or four positions (GK, DM). That's potentially 8 players just to get to a stable squad situation before considering that LWB might need more work, and Son and/or Kane will need replacing soonish. If we work at the rate of one proper upgrade per window then the likes of Bentancur/Romero/Deki will be getting to the last year or two of their contract before we've got a fully functioning first team.

In sum: Get a bloody move on!

We tried for a young British CB in the last few days of the transfer window and talks were advanced. However the selling club were unable to find an adequate replacement in time so opted against selling in the January window. We may go back in for him in the summer, although other targets are likely to become available in the summer window who weren’t available in the Jan window.

Assuming this was/is the same guy then?

Shame really....felt we needed to improve our defense 100%
