McCarthy makes sense IF we mange to move the aforementioned players but the priority should really be a creative wide forward such as Bernard and a striker such as Benteke. I would be very disappointed if we getting McCarthy ment compromising on ether of those positions. Sad to hear Levy, not AVB, wants Chadli as i really feel a wing forward is just as important as a striker and a position we shouldn't be cutting corners on finically. Fair enough if AVB loves him but he doesnt seem to and every ITK seems to mention Chadli as plan B. I would be quite happy with a midfield of Pauly, Sandro, Demb, Holtby, Carroll and Livermore if it ment we could get Bernard. After all we dont have to stick to three in midfield, we can always swap to a 4231. Overall i would be very happy with McCarthy but only after the other two positions have been sorted out properly and no corners have been cut.

I was disappointed in hearing this too. Sounded like to me the Lamela's and Bernard's were on the list more as a symbolic gesture as opposed to being seriously considered.

McCarthy stuff is interesting. Clearly not being bought as a 1st choice. It is the kind of signing Man Utd always used to make. A player who would be good enough to start in most premier teams below the top few, but is prepared to come to a top team, knowing that he is likely to be a squad player.

I'm thinking the likes of Park, Fletcher, Hernandez.

It's good not to just have competition for starting places, but also to have competition to be the go to player from the bench. It invariably results in that player performing well and becoming indispensable.

With regards signings and links to potential signings. I think paulinho is a great addition, a player that can add power and goals to our midfield. The ITk surrounding the likes of Chandli and McCarthy worries me slightly, even benteke, if we wish to keep bale, and have made assurances to bring in top players to assist him and push us into regular CL qualification then surely we should look at signing players that are of similar ilk to bale, the likes of huigiun, isco, felliani and contreao, and alongside that some decent succession planning for life after bale, the likes of the young croat. In realise isco has signed for Madrid but just think we need to aim a smidge higher, we have a decent core of players with potential to really take a step forward

We would be able to make subs and not weaken the team.

But if we have payed big money for McCarthy then we must have more money then suggested, otherwise we wouldn't be spending £15-20M on a player who wont be in the starting 11.

I can't think of many 15-20M squad players who hold their value when it comes time to sell.

True, it is a step up in quality, just seems out of character with how we would do things. Holtby for 2M or Siggurdson for 8m as squad/development players seems more our speed.
