So what would you do different - With a set budget in place?

Sign the best players possible within the budget. That means not wasting time on Llorente, Adebayor (wages) or perhaps even Damaio. Yes that means we are targeting a lower quality of player but the bar for improvement is pretty low when your only forwards currently are Defoe and Kane. I'm not going to list names because I don't play FM but contrary to what we are being led to believe there are forwards available for sale, who are within our budget and better than Defoe.

I would have learnt from the Frazier Campbell fuck-up, and made sure that we had cover. I would have realised that leaving yourself with only one striker dramatically weakens your hand in transfer deals (because it's pretty obvious to other clubs that we're increasingly desperate), so would have looked to have applied a 'one in' then 'one out' policy.

And Newcastle certainly didn't seem to have any problems finding them either.

You havre
That wouldn't be a satisfactory set of answers. Quite frankly there will be no acceptable answers if we go into our first game with Defoe and Kane. That would be spectacular incompetence.

This is so silly. If we overspent and went bust that would be "spectacular incompetence".
Its frustrating - but that life

No interest in Dembele, shame - unless we are hopeful of landing Mountinho - which I really doubt.

Spot on. I'm pretty sure if you asked Graham Carr right now he could find 5 available strikers within budget that could improve on Defoe. In fact even Alan Carr could probably give you a suggestion ! :)

I think what I've gathered from this window is that there are some that either like Levy or don't. And no matter how many times we go over different analyses, we eventually sift through the layers of reasoning which boils down to these two simple camps.

not strictly. they're giving the impression they'll look elsewhere...
Fine! Let them look elsewhere. That's when we keep modric and explain to him real madrid went for a different player. Now lace up your boots and get on the pitch you little fucking rat!

To which the response is the same?

If a deal can't be done, a deal can't be done.

You then have to ask the question whether there are actually any alternatives that wouldn't see the fans up in arms claiming that Signing X is a complete waste of money.

Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. Lucky he's got £1.8m to get over it. ;)

My point was more to do with our recent habit of selling players and then struggling to replace them. Pav was hardly a great striker, but even Pav on a bad day was better than nothing...which is what he's been replaced with. Nothing.

If we didn't have any 'nailed on' replacements we should not have sold Pav. Our transfer policy seemed to be along the lines that we couldn't buy a replacement for Pav first because then people would offer us less money for him. Instead we sold him when a fairly decent offer came in, and gambled on being able to bring in a replacement in time for the new season. Unfortunately just like when we sold Berbatov that gamble has (so far) failed to pay off, and looks increasingly unlikely to before the season starts.

Unfortunately this method of approaching transfers points heavily towards selling Modric on deadline day, and then using the lack of time left as an excuse for not bringing in a replacement.

It's only wasting time if we don't get eventually any of them. Hopefully the club will be working on the B list at the same time as the A list and will be confident we can move in and complete a deal at the last minute if required.
