I don’t think it particularly matters because, regardless of the pitch condition, the same situation always plays out.

I’d argue we’ve been pretty equally poor with the bat. The only difference being Australia have Smith, and to a lesser degree, Labuschagne.

Bowling is a different story. Australian bowlers have comprehensively outperformed ours, especially when the conditions are better suited to batting.

Paine couldn’t really go wrong, regardless of the decision he made at the toss.
