This is actually a very important match. We win this, we keep pace with CL and stop the building Newcastle momentum (unbeaten since August). We lose or draw, suddenly we’re close to 5th/6th and things become a LOT more difficult.

Lloris
Romero - Dier - Lenglet
Doherty - Bentancur - PEH - Sessegnon
Kulusevski - Kane - Son

We will need to have our passing tight and some real locked in defending. I’m concerned that we may need 3-5-2 vs Bruno and Joelinton but I think Kulu is way too important to leave out if fit.

If no Kulu, and Richy is fit.
I’d also be tempted to replace Romero with Davinson.

Lenglet, Sessegnon and Skipp in for Davies, Perisic and Hojbjerg. I'd stick with 3 in CM because I think it was more a case of the players not turning up than the system not working and 2 in CM would have been a blood bath, and Newcastle have a busy midfield.

If Deki is fit though it might have to be 343. Maybe Bissouma would be more comfortable in a pivot. I certainly hope so.

Personally i don't want to see that midfield three again and id play one of Lucas, Perisic or Gil wide right assuming Kulu still isnt fit. And isn't Royal back now? if so i bet he plays regardless of what id like to see.

Could not give a crap about team selection or formation.
If you show no desire or effort and plan to sit in your own half for 80% of the match then it wont matter a jot anyway.
I wanna see some fight and effort to win. I want to see us impose ourselves on Newcastle.
Not optimistic to be honest.

What’s the latest on Deki? Have they said?

Lloris

Romero Dier Lenglet

Spence Skipp Bentancur Sessengnon

Deki Kane Son

Hojberg looks dead on his feet, Skipp will bring some energy in there. I suspect Doherty will start but at this point just give Spence a run and see what he can do because the alternatives are not that guy. No Deki again then I’d probably play Perisic there to give us some guile and quality delivery

The biggest change needs to be in approach and mentality though!

I’m guessing:

————————Lloris
———Romero—Dier—Lenglet
Doherty-Bentancur—Hojbjerg—Sess
————Perisic—Kane—Son

… although obviously Kulu in for Perisic there if he’s somehow recovered in time.

The more you watch Spurs this season, the more we look like a 'paint-by-numbers' team than a proper artist. There are poorer sides lower down the league than us with much better fluency playing out from the back. It's unreal sometimes and you can't unsee it once you notice how robotic and slow we are. Those sides lower down the league have other failings, but our lack of fluency and lack of urgency/intenstiy to pla through the lines and get into attacking situations must change.

To that end, I think Conte should invest tons of start time in Sessegnon and Spence. The wing backs are the most straightforward way of overcoming our stodgy play from the back and can travel with the ball over decent distances to get the whole team further up the pitch. Add Bissouma in the middle as a ball-carrying, line-breaking midfielder and we could get somewhere. Of course, it won't just fall in to place, but we must have much stronger outlets (in wide positions particularly) to advance in a structured way up the pitch.

We're going to end up with a deep 532 again against Newcastle unless we address this. We are not a pressing side and we should not be a (solely) counter-attacking side. So you need to make 3-at-the-back work and that requires more pace and urgency to get forward from wing backs. If Royal and Perisic play, we'll be deep 532. Trippier will have a field day. Our wing backs will be full backs. And Dier will be exposed again as a stationary last defender with ball runners coming at him and his hands behind his back, wondering why it's happening repeatedly despite having two other centre halves supposedly screening him.

Statement win has become the thing to say ATM-what a load of crap. Just play with passion, a desire not to lose-want to win games. I can't accept any lose against any team when we don't show up. Everything is in place for us to do good things this season, it just seems to me, we are always on the edge of it going wrong. This seems to creates too much pressure for the players to Cope with and when we play matches that matter, we collapse.
